Hello and welcome to another edition of SUMO PRIME TIME. It's been almost a week since we witnessed one of the most intense battles of the year in the ring. The July Grand Sumo Tournament was a gripping spectacle, with the competition going down to the wire-and beyond. While Yokozuna Terunofuji ultimately emerged victorious, the tournament was far from a one-sided affair. Numerous challengers stepped up, fiercely contesting the Yokozuna and making the competition thrilling from start to finish. Now, the million-dollar question is: Can Terunofuji repeat the feat in September to truly redeem himself and prove that he's still the king of the ring? And what about the other wrestlers who weren't able to perform up to their standards in Nagoya? We're talking about rikishi like Onosato, Takakeisho, and Kirishima. Let's hope all the competitors get back into tip-top shape for the Autumn Tournament and showcase their true abilities.
It's the most fantastically engaging of rabbit holes. So many layers of detail, tradition, cultural context...it's so exciting to learn all about. Can't wait until September, we'll all be watching together no doubt. 👍
Great recap. In the bad news area, it's worth mentioning a few bad injuries. Asanoyama and Hoshoryu both left the tournament before it concluded (along with one other whose name escapes me), and the injuries could be serious enough to keep them out of the autumn basho.
PLEASE READ! I over the course of this year became a big fan of sumo! I’m a retired widow in New York-USA. If you want to be successful with this channel, you need to visit the stables where the sumo practice and see their daily lives. This is what we want to see as sumo followers! You will get more viewers, believe me! Love from New York❤️😇
i only started watching sumo within the past couple weeks but Terunofuji is such a likeable champion, i wish him the best in the august tournament and i hope to see him do well for many more years because i only started!
I don't have any figures on hand, but I think Onosato needs another 12 wins for Ozeki. If true, it's certainly doable. I hope Hiradoumi does well in the next basho, too. He was great in July.
Fantastic channel! Thank you for this exciting upload. I hope the algorithm shares Sumo Prime Time on more 'recommended' feeds and gets many more people interested in this sport. Can't wait until September-- I'll be watching the tournament from Japan this time!!
Takakeisho was the worst Ozeki I've ever seen - and I saw a lot of them in the last 20 years. I'm veery glad that he is out of the rank and sure he is never coming back.
How is the beer man 🍺still on an ozeki run without achieving KK wins & how does he get a prize🏆 for 9 wins including a bye? If 8 wins are enough, then you have 21rikishi who are entitled for a special prize🧐
Please tell NHK sumo not to spoil the result for the winner of the tournament on the thumbnail of day 15. So disappointing to already know who wins before watching the NHK day 15 video.
@@Battle_Beard and one of them was fusen. He performed as expected of a Sekiwake so did not do anything that was more special than lower rank Takanosho who beat the Yokozuna and him. Takanosho should have won outstanding performance as well as fighting spirit. At 9-6 Onosato should have got the “not quite good enough for ozeki yet” non-award.
Everybody knows that the true winner of the Outstanding Performance award was Takanosho not Onosato. They are desperately trying to get Onosato to Ozeki and then Yokozuna quickly, ideally before Terunofuji retires.
Takanosho won three more games than Onosato, including beating the Yokozuna, too and Onosato himself, but somehow were supposed to believe it's Onosato who had an outstanding bashō. Utterly unfair.
@@cync3510there is something to be said about handing the grand champion his first loss after 10 straight victories. Momentum is an important thing in sumo both literally and figuratively. If Onosato lost to Teru the tournament would have been decided on day 14. Also worthwhile to point out that Onosato had a better record than Hakuho did in his shin sekiwake tournament. I think Takanosho deserved it as well, but I can see the ideation behind giving it to Onosato
@@BicornioSPA In this case, more does mean better because the subject is growing a youtube channel. The algorithm rewards frequent uploads more than sporadic uploads.
Honestly I’m disgusted with the JSA disrespect two of the best ever in the sport by doing absolutely nothing to honor Yokozuna Akebonos death AND the clear disparity of treatment between the Miyagino and Isegihama stables
Mark my words, if Onosato will become a yokozuna this year he will bring great dishonor to JSA and sumo at large to such a degree that sumo is likely to stop existing all together. Thats what you get for wrongfully tearing down miyagino stable.
@@bayarea6766 He just forced a child to drink while crying in the shower. It's not identical to Hokuseiho's behavior, but still something to consider.

Hiradoumi deserves all the recognition. He's a serious underdog 🎉
He really performs well so far, but can he pull an Ama/Harumafuji? i kind of hope so, could mix it up there a bit.
The moment the zabuton hit the back of Takanoshō's head was caught by the NHK's camera crew. 🤠
Great Yokozuna indeed! It did my heart good to see him in such form again.
I just started watching sumo this year and I am amazed at their dedication in training and the tradition of the sport

Great and Exciting Tournament - down to the wire - Thank you for sharing - Sumo Primetime 🎆🎇🏆
Onosato could be one of the best in the future i hope 🙂 I wish him Luck.
Love this Channel!
Definitely a fun tournament to watch. Wish Taka could have repeated his win in the playoff, but still, what a great tourney.

Onosato is getting preferential treatment since day one
Teru had to stand for such a long award ceremony that his back and knees started to hurt.

Hello sumo friends
This was an exciting tournament. Thank you SPT!
It's over too soon!
Takakeisho losing Ozeki is heartbreaking. He is my favorite wrestler and this was the first time I have seen him have a losing record!

Takanoshō was actually eligible for that award, but it was conditional on him winning the Emperor's Cup.

At this point in his career trajectory, 9 wins is a disappointing result for Onosato. Outstanding Performance?!
Outstanding Performance Prize is usually given to somebody who has beaten the yokozuna/yusho-winner in that basho.
