  • Corey goes to Martin Hanson's house where he finds Martin sitting outside with his death paint face paint on his face. Martin says he just invented death paint. Cory hints that they caught all the guys and that the man who killed Natalie went out with a whimper. Martin then starting to get choked up says "I just want to sit here and miss her for a minute, will you sit with me?" Cory sits with him, and a title screen comes up saying that statistics are kept for every group of missing people except native American women. Nobody knows how many are missing.

I really like Renner’s character in this movie. They didn’t script him as a run and gun badass like every other Hollywood movie. He was a simple, quiet man that lived a peaceful life. He had a good rifle and knew how to use it and the land.
Another thing that I noticed, he took of his hat to grieve when he looked at the pictures. A subtle, yet powerful gesture to signal to the viewer that he is an honest man; a good man.

I love how a "Native American" critic blasted this movie about the "Dieing Indian" That's such a shitty thing to say. Sheridan's movies revolve around deaths of cultures which is certainly happening. From Cowboys, to Native Americans, to small Texas towns. It's something we see in our rear view mirrors.

As a Native American, it brought a lot of awareness. I think what’s missing more in TV and movies is the positivity in Native America today. Because we’re in a new age of the security of the lives of Native Americans. No is at war or scalping for bounties.

  • @Ippoone
    @Ippoone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

This movie reminds me of an old spaghetti western where the cowboy protagonist helps the Natives anyway they can, but it’s Modern day cowboy helps Modern day Native American. The legacy continues.

Yep. Sheridan is really good with these Neo Westerns. If you haven't already check out Sicario and Hell or High Water. Same director, the three movies are like an anthology

When I first watched the movie I will be honest I was rather annoyed with Renner’s character as he felt like little more than a white guy in a Native role. It wasn’t until I read Sheridan’s reasoning, for this scene especially, that he had a white actor. In this scene you’ve got the “cowboy and the Indian” both in their most stereotypical attire from those old films, but instead of slaughtering each other they’re side by side, with a level of understanding for the trauma suffered by the Native American.
I am in awe with Sheridan as a writer as I am with him as a writer

God the moment where he looked at the photos of his daughter and Nat and he teared up...cried my eyes out. Can you imagine that feeling? Nothing will ever stop the pain of your daughter’s death but at least you can find a bit of relief from knowing that even though you couldn’t avenge your daughter you avenged her friend. It was like he was speaking to them from his heart, like “I’m sorry I couldn’t save you both, but I did a bit of a good and I hope that justice, little as it was can help you both rest in peace.” Heartbreaking and powerful.

"I hear there's one of them is still missing..."
    "No, no one's missing."
    "How'd he go out?"
    "With a whimper."
What an absolutely powerful scene, Corey having lost his daughter as well knows the pain Hanson is going through but unlike Hanson; Corey never got the satisfaction of closure so when Hanson turned to face him and asked "How'd he go out" with pain and rage in his eyes Corey gave him the only answer he knew would satisfy "With a whimper" (which is to say in pain, scared and as a coward) and with it he gave him a semblance of peace which he himself has yet to receive. Heartbreaking and jubilant at the same time, super underrated movie.

"Oh, I ain't going nowhere." Such a simple, yet deeply powerful response to the father's question. Says so much under the surface that it doesn't even need to be articulated further. Beautiful ending to a very sad, but powerful film that brings more attention to a problem in our society that very much needs to be remedied. Jeremy Renner and GIl Birmingham were casted so well in this film.

I really love how Cory almost breaks looking at Nat and his daughter. Revenge in this film is truly transactional, blood for blood. It doesn't make you any happier, it just relieves the burden of vengeance, leaving you with the sorrow and the weight of loss. He is so plain and honest about it, too; this isn't to bring anybody back from the dead- you can only make more dead, and move on.

A hero that is honest about his flaws and always thinking about everyone, revenge wasn’t going to make them feel better, but to retain some sort of Justice in the cruel Wyoming wilderness.

I dont do well until the weekend. I do what im supposed to during the week. For the most part. I work my 45. I even volunteer. I sip whiskey at night. Like these men I know I really cant protect her. Only God can. Does that require me to do my part? My personal obedience to God? I feel her best hope is for me to obey God. Im lacking always. I need refinement. May God bless us all that we would become less for His glory.

I don’t know if this is a stretch, but the final shot of the two of them sitting cross legged next to each in the archway of the swing set makes it look like they’re sitting in a teepee together. Like an image of a feeling of finally finding peace or sitting in a home that isn’t truly home (since the Native Americans were forced to live on that land) but it’s what they’ve been able to make home. Just my observation.
