  • Scenes from the Astrodome on the night of January 6, 1980, when a crowd of over 70,000 welcomed home the Houston Oilers after they had lost the AFC Championship game to the Steelers in Pittsburgh that afternoon. Included are head coach Bum Phillips famous "kick that SOB in" speech along with interviews with Phillips and his son Wade, the current Houston Texans defensive coordinator/former Cowboy coach who was an Oilers assistant coach 1976-1980.

I was a big time Oiler fan from 1977 till they left town, I was at a lot of those games and it was cheap then. I got standing room only tickets on the ground level and stood behind the back fence at mid field and could see everything great, $5.00 for the ticket and $1.50 for a 20 oz beer, Luv Ya Blue!!!

Been watching the Cowboys since 1970. I miss The Houston Oilers. The Texans need to petition Bud Addams daughter for the Oilers name and bring it back to Texas.

I am a Lifelong Steelers fan, but I always loved the "Luv Ya Blue " Houston Oilers. They always handled themselves with class, and that comes from their leader Bum Phillips. He was, is, and always will be my favorite coach of all-time.
R.I.P. Bum, heaven just got a great head coach.

As a lifelong Oilers fan, may I say you Mr. Papa are a very classy and cool dude. As soon as we lost the Oilers I found it very easy for me to casually root for the Steelers, I think it was out of respect and nostalgia for that rivalry we had so long ago.

@@woodson21 When the Steelers didn't make the playoffs in 1980, because of the Oilers beating them in week 14, I wanted the Oilers to win the Super Bowl that season. That's because of the Steeler-Oiler rivalry being built on mutual respect.
Bum and Earl always handled themselves with class. And I don't know if I've ever seen an NFL fan base love their team as much as those Luv Ya Blue Oilers.

I was at that big welcome home party! My mom took me and 11 of my best buddies, and we had a blast. We were on the morning show Good Morning America the next morning. My mom, me and my friends toasting the camera with beers ( yes we were underage but this was a whole other time ago and people weren't so tightly wound up and their butts didn't tighten up over everything especially stupid bs. But omg, what a fun night we had. Didn't get home until around 3 am. Oilers didn't get into the dome until after midnight. One of my favorite memories from my teenage years ❤️

I so wish the city would've done to bud adams what the city of Cleveland did to art Modelle , kept the name, history and colors and forced the titans to be like the ravens. A virtual expansion team.

Mr Bud Adams is the guy who decided to move the Oilers to Tennessee, so everyone said, "Take your ass and go, but you gotta leave the name and colors here, but your sorry ass can go. I can assure you that Tennessee fans will never love their team the way we loved the Oilers, and the players knew that, and they weren't happy about the move either and the fans in Tennessee have yet come even close to celebrating their team the way we celebrated the Oilers even through all the loosing we still were there for them

I worked with a lady who's sister was a Derrick Doll. She was absolutely a beautiful lady and if I remember correctly one of the first black women to be a Derrick Doll. Our office was literally within throwing distance from the Dome so we had a couple of Derrick Dolls come over and have lunch with us. Very sweet girls. After meeting them I had a newfound respect for professional cheerleaders. The nonsense that they are willing to put up with and basically end up paying to be a cheerleader has always amazed me

Second year in a row of loss to get to Super Bowl and 70,000, more than could fit in the Astrodome showed up and lined the streets and freeways from the airport to the Astrodome. This whole city was flying high for those LUV YA BLUE years. Everywhere you went. It permeated the entire city. It was very exciting to witness.

The NFL isn’t worth watching today! It’s nothing but a 70 passes per game now. No running game to speak of! No fullbacks! Vastly overpaid and overrated players! Officiating SUCKS! Defenses cannot tackle. The defense has their hands tied behind their back! Just absolutely sucks as a sporting event! But, these days were Great to watch!
