Somewhere in this crowd is my dad who past away a year ago due to covid.(got sick before the vaccine was widely available). I like to watch this to remind myself that he lived a full life with his own ups and downs. Helps me get threw my own ups and downs. Oilers fans were truly the best people around and I’m glad I have this piece of my dads history to look back on and smile.
I'm a lifelong Steelers Fan... but I had a lot of respect for Bum's Oilers... this video is a reason why.. Houston fans rocked!! YOU WILL RECOVER.. GOD BLESS HOUSTON!
I'm a lifelong Metro Detroit resident and a diehard Lions fan for 43 years and counting but as a kid I loved the Oilers almost as much as the Lions and I use to love watching Oilers home games, cuz I loved the Oilers fight song. HOUSTON OILERS NUMBER 1!
Chris Singeltary I miss the Houston Oilers my family were Steelers fans but at 12 years old I knew the Oilers were cooler and had a team of fighters.NFL today not worth the watch
This is truly remarkable footage. If we didn't have TH-cam on the internet, I just don't know. So educational and entertaining. Bless you for this post!
We not only did not have the internet back then, there was no such thing as a personal computer. This had to be filmed on a VHS recorder or 8mm or a professional camera which was a big thing.
Lifelong Steeler fan myself, and Bum Phillips is my all-time favorite coach. We can agree that the Oilers players and fans had class and great passion, and those traits were epitomized by their leader Bum Phillips. R.I.P. coach, you'll never be forgotten.
One of the best forgotten rivalries. It didn't last long but it was a lot of fun. I remember the Oilers all talked about how much respect they had for the Steelers and the Steelers said the same about the oilers. The issue we (the Oilers lol) had was we couldn't get that title game in the dome. Credit to the Steelers for having home field advantage both times. And also the Mike Renfro's beautiful TD catch incorrectly called out of bounds hurt too ;)
I use to live in Houston, Tx and I was a HUGE Oilers fan. I remember watching this on TV. Long live the Houston Oilers and Dan Pastorini and the Earl of Cambell.
The day the Oilers left Houston for Tennessee was the last time I watched football. It made me so sick to see this kind fan betrayed for money. I just don't have the heart to invest anything into sports ever again there are much more important things that really matter. But that's just me I live in Packard country now with people who have not known such fan betrayal; however this video brought back some memories of a more innocent time.
I'm not even an Oilers fan (Jets) and I know what it feels to be beat up and kicked around. I have never been sadder for the fans of a franchise than for Oilers fans having that team stolen from then. The Texans will never fill that hole in the heart of Oilers fans Bum said it best. Cowboys may be Americas team...I don't care the Oilers are TEXAS' team
Whoever filmed this was maybe 100' away from where I stood that night as a four year old, my first ever trip to the Dome. Let's just say it had a lasting impression. Seeing this is amazing, like it was ripped from my memory.
This is why sports are so special. I remember growing up in Detroit and I'm still a diehard lions fan but as a kid watching the highlights of this I got goosebumps and even teared up because it was so special
I was 14 and I was also at this wonderful event. The air was literally electric. I remember the anticipation of waiting for about 3 hours, and then the excitement as we were told the buses were just outside. No sad faces, just proud fans loving their team. If I remember correctly, only100 people were at the airport to greet the team, and players said they were worried they had lost the support of the town. Heheh...we were all HERE!!! No fans will ever match the love of Oiler's fans! LUV YA BLUE!
Thanks for posting this. For those too young to remember and angrily comment with no prior knowledge....this moment is STILL the most important moment in NFL history in this city. To see this crowd and the cheering you would not know that we'd lost the game in Pittsburgh. We were so proud of that football team. Now, having said that....GO TEXANS!,
I was thirteen and loved the Oilers. I watched this on TV and felt so proud to be an Oilers fan. When they moved Houston football has never been the same. Those fans in dome were amazing. If i was a player getting off the bus I would have started crying. How much sweeter it would have been if we had beaten the Steelers. Regardless it was a historic moment in NFL history. Go Oilers!!
Not happening: Amy Adams Strunk has said no, and she is the owner of the Titans. The Titans are the Oilers. I would much prefer the Titans to revert back to their original name: Tennessee Oilers. Houston can eat it.
No city ever loved a team the way Houston loved the Oilers while Bum was their coach. They were outmanned (except for Earl and maybe Brazile), but they played on guts and love for one another, and the city was smitten and all-in. That they could not beat the Steelers was a sad reality, but they pushed Pittsburgh to its physical limits and earned the admiration of the Steelers players. God bless Bum, and Earl, and Dante, and all of them. ps Houston is no longer capable of this kind of love. Even in victory the Astros never experienced anything remotely like this.
I so remember this. Was not there but watched it on TV and cried,,seeing so so many fans waiting for the team so late at night. Great moment. Shame on anyone wanting to tear down the Astrodome. I watched it being built .
This proves to me the Steelers of the 1970s were the greatest football team- NAY- TEAM- of all time. Because if you're getting a crowd of this size and enthusiasm just for having the guts to show up against the Pittsburgh Steelers . . . simply incredible!
Some cities are dealt successful seasons and spoiled with SuperBowl wins. That was not the case with Houston and our beloved Oilers but, the bond that Houston had with the Oilers was nothing less. The "Columbia-blue" pom-poms, Luv Ya Blue placards, "Houston Oilers #1 blaring from the speakers above...those that did not live here then, will never understand. We didn't have one SuperBowl to show for all the Oilers' years here but, that did not diminish the love and enthusiasm we had for the team.
I'll NEVER forget that night. Robbed of a victory the welcome home was unbelievable. We mananged to get into the dome; the seats plus stairs were full, cose to 90000 people inside the dome. 610 (Which circled the city was at a standstill with 250k cars sitting). When the buses finally came in the place exploded. NEVER have I had such a feeling then or ever. I will never forget Bum Phillips, Kenny the Snake, Mike Barber, Billie Whiteshoes and EARL CAMPBELL. May Bud Adams rot in hell!
Great video and a great time to be a football fan in Houston. Point of reference for the video's poster - while the 1978 homecoming was large (estimated to be 45,000), the 1979 homecoming was even larger with an estimated 70,000. What a unique time in sports history!
My dad and I watched the Oilers together every Sunday. When he passed in 1996, I took his Oiler coffee mug home with me. I was fourteen years old when they played this game. I had forgotten how we all felt back then. Watching this brought it all back. The excitement and how loved them...when or lose. Thank you Bum Phillips and all the players. Luv ya blue!
Wow this gives me goosebumps! If I were one of the players on the bus I would have needed a box of Kleenex. Even though they have the Texans, the city of Houston should have never lost the Oilers, that was just criminal. Also when the Texans started in Houston in 02 they should have gone right back to being the Oilers. When Tennessee turned into the Titans bud Adams had to lose the rights to the oiler name. The Cleveland browns came back as the browns and the Oilers should have too.
I wish The Houston Texans would have just been The Houston Oilers again. I wish the new team would have kept the name and uniforms of The Houston Oilers. Like how The Cleveland Browns moved and became The Baltimore Ravens but when Cleveland got a new team they were The Browns again.
Shortly after this they ripped out the old dome scoreboard to "make room for more seats", didn't even ask the fans how we felt about it. Then we got cheated out of a championhip in Pittsburgh, then they fired Bum Phillips, then sold our team to Tennessee. It's easy to see why fans are upset but PLEASE support the Texans, remember Wade Phillips!!!!
I am a huge Oiler/Titan fan from Cleveland. It started in this 78 season. I really miss the dome. One of the best games ever was when the Steelers came in week 16 and Cody Carlson started and tore the Steelers up. 1990 season.
Talk about loyal fans. Rare. The Oilers just got their @sses handed to them, 34-5, and this is the reception they get. Reminds me of the Boston Celtics fans a few years ago, chanting "let's go Celtics" after watching the Celtics implode at home against the Heat.
@SteelerNationTX Yes, they were and my son said it best. After no longer having season tickets to the Texans, I hope they win, but just not a big fan. He said, " Of course not Dad, you grew up with the Oilers and there will never be a Pro team like that" He is right!!!! Go Blue!!!! Always.....
Facts that how it be. That's home field advantage right there. Let's Go.. always lit... and that wasn't even a game yet. Let's go H-Town that's how them Texans need y'all this season. 2021 Houston will see you in February!!
Houston died when this team moved. Something about the Texans that just doesn't seem real. Almost like they're a PG version of a real football team. The Oilers were the heart and soul of this city.
The oilers are slowly starting to become a a fading memory...probably about half of the die hard oilers fans from these days are dead, young people like myself just love the texans, I'm not from Houston but I still look back at the NFL history in houston. would of been cool to be in the astrodome as those buses were rolling in
Miss Ya Blue! Houston is and always will be a No-Nonsense City and I'd love to see not only a Houston Oilers Revival, but, having to wear the Super Bowl Logo out forever like they did in Wisconsin after the Packers won in 1997.
@dolan2159 as a steelers fan i can respect the rivalry we had with houston.. to say they were a bad team is ludacris. they were solid from like up into the mid 90s. the warren moon teams had a tough division with cleveland and cincy being really good and the steelers average.
And in the following year, the Oilers made some serious noise in the NFL after upsetting the Chargers in San Diego, they came close to punching their ticket to Pasadena(Home of Super Bowl XIV) had the Referee not blown that call on Dan Pastorini's Touchdown Pass to Mike Renfro. Psychologically, that changed the complexity of the 1979 AFC Championship Game.
I had no idea the fans did this for their team! Even when they were robbed from reaching the Super Bowl with that stupid call, it's amazing that the fans still have love and support for the Oilers! 😀
@SteelerNationTX OH I agree, and I just cannot get excited about the Texans. Some forget but the Oilers were doing very well before they left town. Houston was so stupid in letting that team go. Then the city turns around and builds a new stadium for a new team that want be going anywhere for a long time. Bud Adams at lease was going to put money down on a new stadium. Which was more than what the Texan owner did.
UMMM...NO, half of us are NOT dead. Not yet. I was only 16 and at home IN Houston watching this on TV at the time. I HOPE the Texans do well and go all the way this year. Houston needs that. BUT.....THIS.....was LOVE of a Football team. And NO....WE AIN'T DEAD!
Team owners may do what they want, but team names and records should belong to the city. The Texans, or the city, should make an effort to get a Cleveland type deal and reclaim their team.
They want to tear down the Astrodome! How can anyone in their right mind bulldoze this symbol of Houston? I remember watching this and crying as the buses came in and the team came out and stood on the platform. We loved our Oilers! Not the owner and some of us are still loyal to the team. Love the Texans as well and they have been great in recent years, but the Oilers were special in so many ways. Love ya Blue was everywhere!!!! Not the same excitement for the Texans.
I don't think the MIAMI DOLPHINS did that with their RIPPED OFF version of your fight song! My last Detroit Lions home game in person, was against the HOUSTON OILERS! Run and shoot, vs Run and shoot!
I was at the pep rally the following year when Bum said, "Last year, we knocked on the door, this year we beat on it. Next year we'll kick the son of a bitch down" Needless to say, that never happened, but man, I miss my Oilers.
Somewhere in this crowd is my dad who past away a year ago due to covid.(got sick before the vaccine was widely available). I like to watch this to remind myself that he lived a full life with his own ups and downs. Helps me get threw my own ups and downs.

YOU WILL RECOVER.. GOD BLESS HOUSTON!
omg it is even more amazing because the Oilers didn't win the championship but the fans where still there to greet them
No shit stupid, that’s literally what the video is about
Why did I start crying while watching this?.... Miss ya Blue!
I know, right?
It was an amazing night. The Dome was moving.
Real fans! You stand by your team regardless!
When the oilers got moved that was it for football in Houston.
Chris Singeltary I miss the Houston Oilers my family were Steelers fans but at 12 years old I knew the Oilers were cooler and had a team of fighters.NFL today not worth the watch

One of my favorite friendly rivalries. Pittsburgh and Houston. Gladiators fighting with a smile.
Lifelong Steeler fan myself, and Bum Phillips is my all-time favorite coach. We can agree that the Oilers players and fans had class and great passion, and those traits were epitomized by their leader Bum Phillips. R.I.P. coach, you'll never be forgotten.
Thanks for the kind words ! I will also give a shout out to Chuck Noll and the GREAT Steeler teams of the 70`s!

You could blame Drayton McLane
Anyone or any thing that moves to Tennessee is flawed by definition.
I'm not even an Oilers fan (Jets) and I know what it feels to be beat up and kicked around. I have never been sadder for the fans of a franchise than for Oilers fans having that team stolen from then. The Texans will never fill that hole in the heart of Oilers fans
