Kei cars have traditionally not met crash standards in many parts of the world too. Regardless I fully support the idea of bringing small efficient and reliable cars here and making auto companies keep budget options available.
Engineers would make logical decisions towards solving the problem, politicians and businessmen won’t. Until this issue stops putting money in their pockets, it won’t be addressed
Wife & I own a F250 for home & towing needs. I daily drive a 2008 bare bones Toyota Yaris to commute to my job 40 miles away. This car was $12k USD new back in 2008. I would be more than happy to buy another one brand new under $20k or even a smaller/cheaper K car if they are introduced to the US Market I like the idea of A & B vehicle classifications.
Manufacturers stop making/ selling entry level cars, most likely have to do with consumers are not buying them. Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2 all gone but they are still selling them in Asian markets. People love big suv/ gas hog, feel “safe”, manufacturers simply cater to the demand.
My understanding (correct me if I am wrong) is that in the US safety standards for "truck" type vehicles are lower than they are for cars. Consequently the profits to be made are higher, so manufacturers concentrate on the trucks and don't invest in sedans. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy: if there are only trucks to buy then sales of sedans will fall. AAs for "real" safety, seeing the quality of rusted out trucks on the road, in the salt belt, I suspect a new un-rusted Kei car is probably at least as safe, if not _more_ safe.
I somewhat agree, however gone are the days of low APR and reasonable MSRP. The American middle class are being financially squeezed in every direction. If things don't change the market demand for cheaper cars will go up because people have no other choice.
Another factor is manufacturer don’t have enough profit margin in low end cars, with high end suv, sell you all the electric gadgets, all about up selling. are u even suppose to drive if you are not mentally alert and physically fit? Whole car industry direction is kind of messed up. Honda fit can probably do 40 mpg plus without all the gadgets, just a bit below a EV and hybrid. We are in the era of greed.
The solution is a blend of those two options.. Cheap Chinese kei cars.. Wuling Mini is a car I'd love to drive around in... A $4500 USD MSRP isn't bad either!
For all those who crow about safety, if that's REALLY the issue why are motorcycles still around when you are 44X more likely to die on one of those than in even a cheap econobox...
Are you going to walk, or do you have a horse? Don't say "take public transport" unless you have a lazy trillion dollars to rebuild the public transport networks for the major cities..
Newer Kei cars have ABS and airbags. Many are hybrids and some even fully electric.

Enjoy Amish/Mennonite life... I'm descended from these people and there's no way I'd love THAT simple a life...
No, Ford wiped out their entire car lineup. They only sell big trucks SUVs and the only car they sell is the mustang
