Fascinating history Chris ! In happier days my lady and l along with my Mother amd Frank stayed at Sainte - Mere'- Eglise. The harrowing U.S war graves ! the parachutist stuck ,suspended , hanging from the church tower. The Mullberry Harbours , the gun implacements ( interestingly the guns were constructed by Skoda as l recall and last but not least , the Horsa Glider in the local museum . Thanks Chris.
Very glad the film was of interest Chris, do please have a subscribe to my channel and check some of the other films. Chris. th-cam.com/channels/Oh3lzlK4b9UtMzHagk7SaQ.html
A very rounded story, not only the construction and use but, also the after war make do and mend necessity both in UK and Europe. Well worth watching with an interesting pic of the "field modifications" of a Jeep and equipment in the towed anti-tank gun role. I fear this reality will soon be lost to all by the "order now, home delivery tomorrow" internet generation soon.
Not necessarily - My 9 year old grandson is studying WW2 at school. I have a magazine containing an article about Arnhem written by my father, a glider pilot who had returned from D-Day for the next mission. This magazine is now pinned on the class notice board at the school and has attracted a lot of interest. This magazine was also displayed at my childrens' schools many years ago, so it has done the rounds. Thannks for an excellent video. Great to see the Horsas being re-purposed.
The diameter of the fuselage was the same as the Comet 1. A mock-up of the Comet's nose was attached to a Horsa to ascertain the view from the cockpit in the late 1940s at Hatfield.
Yes he produced two films, one recovering gliders to use again and the other a transatlantic expedition both films produced very well, way above my standard of production with over 2 million subscribers, something to aspire to. Chris.
Thanks Chris very interesting. I joined the army air corps in 72 which was formerly the glider pilot regiment and at the time there was a glider fuselage in the museum at Middle Wallop. I have subscribed being a local lad. 👍
I would like to add that the MKI Horsa initially intended only for troops and later it was discovered that a jeep actually would fit into it several were desiginated just for vehicle transport. When intended for vehicle transport no seats were installed. A said after landing the jeep and /trailer /fieldgun would be unloaded by removing the tail. The , six, bolts that held the tail to the fuselage were replaced with quick release bolts. These bolts were released two at the time by the gliderpilots. When done correct the tail would fall off. It could happen that it would not work, a heavy landing could render the quick release useless. Cordite was used in emergency only! In Normandy a few gliders, including their load had caught fire. after using cordite,. It was the last time cordite was used. All gliders were also equipted with axes and saws for that purpose. The MKII was only operationaly in March 1945 during operation Varsity. After the war Belgium bought a few new made MKII gliders but these were never used, even in training.
