too many details are missing with the sexual molestation allegation against Haein. In one extreme, it could have been a consensual kiss between a just-turned-19 and a just-under-16 who are dating. In another extreme, it could’ve been unconsensual molestation. We don’t even know whether the allegation came from the victim or whether it was determined statutory by the federation/media.

And offer workshops, counseling, and awareness training across-the-board for young athletes who are growing up at an impressionable time in a very difficult, unforgiving sport.
Very interesting discussion regarding the marketability of gymnastics versus FS. I disagree that people can't connect with gymnasts because they are robotic. I think that competing 4 events allows viewers to connect and gymnastics is a very popular sport for summer Olympics despite the fact that it is dissimilar to ballet or figure skating. My God, track & field and swimming are the two other most widely watched summer Olympic sports and they have no choreography at all! There is also the fact that women's American gymnasts have won gold in the most prestigious event, the All-around every year since 2004 and have at least medalled in the team event since 2008. Also you see Simone or whoever are the top 2 American gymnasts in the qualifications, team, all-around and multiple individual events within each international competition so you are seeing them more frequently and getting to know them. However, I do like FS as a new viewer and am most interested in ice dance. Personally I feel Chock and Bates are the most marketable individuals American FS has now that Nathan Chen is gone. You really need more gold medals in American FS to make the sport more marketable, I think. Also a sport needs to have top athletes with longevity. It really doesn't work to come in with a new top athlete every 4 years when your country isn't winning gold consistently. It really only works if the public knows that the new athlete will likely be winning gold as well otherwise athletes should last at least 8 years. Can someone who knows gymnastics explain to me why the seasons essentially consists of four national level events in the span of three months and US gymnasts avoiding the World Cup series as if it were toxic sludge. I compare this to the Meagan approach which is to compete internationally as much as you can and see how you stack up.
I think they have more competition s than that generally. And they probably don’t do the World Cup because they’re so deep and dominant it doesn’t matter. Plus, as you can see by what’s recently happened to Skye Blakeley and Konnor McClain, there’s such a risk of injury (the podiums they compete on are much harsher than what they have at their gyms). Although I think US gymnasts did compete in such events more frequently ahead of the last Olympics when they could qualify for individual spots.
Also - most of the U.S. gymnasts compete in college and aim to peak at the end of the year. The World Cups don't typically benefit the U.S. much based on the training schedule of the national team. In the past, there was a desire to have a first peak in March-April, come down and then upgrade routines for the summer. It was designed to achieve maximum performance for a World Championships or Olympic Games. The internal competitions were typically harder than any event on the World Cup circuit. After COVID and post Nassar, the federation faced financial hardships and didn't send the gymnasts our because there wasn't any money. This year, USAG did send the team to a few meets (Pac Rim, Gymnix, etc), but it was largely the B or C-list gymnasts because most of the A-list contenders were in college, injured, recovering or waiting to peak this summer.
Plus, it's a guarantee that the US is going to qualify a team for every Olympics. For some other athletes from smaller countries, they are attending World Cup events to either qualify via that route or demonstrate to their federation that they are competitive internationally.
It's nice having them in competition, but I couldn't stand the judges ignoring their flaws. Made me feel bad for the other skaters that genuinely tried.
For sure, individually, these young ladies were all very talented, but I have huge reservations about Eteri's 'factory-line' approach to churning young automaton quadsters who tended to get thrown on the scrap heap very quickly, or developed serious injuries due to poor technical training methods. Not to mention, the tendency to starve themselves, coupled with the continually denied alleged doping practices utilized for endurance and quick recovery in consistently performing and training quads. I'd love to have seen the talent of these young ladies blossom without the harsh training methods, starvation diets, and bts interference of Dr. X. 🤨 I lost interest in ladies skating during Eteri's factory-led approach to molding quadsters. The other part of my waning interest was the boring sameness of many ladies. I like seeing different approaches to music, program, and costume selection for ladies, like we have seen with Loena, Kaori, Amber, Bradie, Lara Naki, Kimmy Repond, Lindsay Thorngren, et al. Allow the ladies to blossom individually and express their different personalities without being starved, subjected to harsh training methods, and overly molded into the stale, superficial ice princess stereotype. Has the discipline finally stopped chasing after the next Michelle Kwan and are learning to allow female skaters to express their individuality? 🤔
Russia didn’t have a Ladies world champion until, what - Butyrskaya in 1999, then Slutskaya in 2002? If they gave up the sweatshop methods, starvation, puberty blockers, and cheating, they wouldn’t be winning anymore.
Yep, and what I mean by hoping the women's discipline has, 'finally stopped chasing the next MK,' is that there will ever only be one Michelle Kwan! Ladies can surely still be inspired by her example, but they need to find out who they are on the ice and express themselves, not some unattainable ideal.
JSF held a board meeting yesterday and announced the schedule for the domestic competitions for the upcoming season. Surprise factor was the Japan Open on Oct5 (venue tbd) - an obvious attempt imo to boost 💰🎫 sales, having the pro skaters in the roster. The Nationals is Dec19-22. Another notable event, the rink where they usually hold Tokyo Regionals (Sep 20-23) is undergoing renovation so it will be held in a different venue in Funabashi (where Rinka, Rio Nakata, Yuna Aoki are based) but the place has no seats so it will be a live stream only without spectators.
I would 100% watch a Deanna reality show. Or something focused on all Canadian pairs and Americans who train there now that we have Balazs and Audrey there. Either way, if Deanna did a Patreon that was about skincare with some skating gossip thrown in I would PAY for that
You really need to educate yourself on what is involved with putting on a competition and the contracts the LOC’s have to negotiate with all parties involved. It is very ignorant for you to disparage the removal of illegally posted videos of a competition by saying it’s “free publicity”. The LOC’s have to follow the rules of their contracts and need to make money in order to continue hosting competitions. There is so much that happens behind the scenes of a competition and in particular an international one. There’s sometimes more important things than click counts and likes when it comes to organizing a competition.
I hope this isn't the case, but there's probably a reasonable likelihood that skater A and skater B were also abused themselves when they were younger. It just seems to be the trend with this kind of behavior.
She gave the guy she had been seeing for a couple of years a hickey he asked for. The problem is she turned 19 two months ago and is considered an adult. Sexual abuse charge is ridiculous. Drinking in the dorm and him sneaking into female dorm were the real violations. He just threw them under the bus to get out of punishment it looks like.
@@joeyartk These kind of situations are difficult to suss out because they're not cut and dry. Yes there should be an age or age range limit to differentiate adults from children, but it really is not so cut and dry.
@@johnl405 A little common sense and life experience helps though. Sticking to the letter of the law instead of intent, lack of social experiences, and bitterness from one's own past lead to supporting ridiculous punishment like this.

The ISU and USSU need to take a book from gymnastics and show skating on TH-cam. US Gymnastics shows all the competitions on their channel. The BBC shows World Championships on TH-cam as well. I do plan to get Peacock for a month in order to watch Gymnastics in Paris.
Scandal .... korea get ISU president and just keeps failing, hope eunsoo sees an opening and comes back. The age change and russia being out really changes everything
Do you know anything about this chaebol? He is the son in law of the Samsung founder and has sat on many boards due to nepotism. He doesn't give a flying f about people's well being.
Korea is corrupt....Nepo baby president who committed fraudulent acts. Eunsoo was kicked out of uni and retired at 19! Where have you been? The coaches were beating Young You, and Haein. You have no idea. It's sick over there (and other countries too but we are talking Korea).
She said they were in a relationship admitted to drinking and regretted it then said she worries more about the olympics than the minor she sexually assaulted when dating allegedly he was 13 when she 17
I love Sasha Fear, her skating skills are phenomenal. I hope she comes back. Lilah really needs to work on her ankles and knees. I heard Superstition by Stevie Wonder is a good choice. The Lion King program was never going to work, it's such a shame they didn't do Madonna or Lady Gaga.
Dave & Nolan, I would totally watch your reality TV show. Too bad the powers that be would never let it happen. They're really stuck in the past and want their skaters to be untouchable ice princesses and stoic gentlemen. The IAM doc they did for peacock last cycle was such a dud. I don't need to hear about Madison talk about nails or Zach talk about cars, who cares! People want mess, grit and personality. I feel like the the PR department of USFS is soooooo incompetent, they should just fire whomever they have now and hire a bunch of college interns and they'd probably do a better job.
Ya. Walk me though how two college age girls “order” a high school age dude to come to their dorm room. This is not a thing. Sorry but there are differences.
@@nl887 It looks like a failure of leadership more than anything else. In that 17-21 age bracket they will date and send boob pics when drinking. A and B both caught drinking multiple times. C goes to girls dorm without fear of consequences. And the coach gets a …3 month ban. And unfortunately Korea culture offers no second chances to celebs caught in scandals. Hope they all have good support network at home. They will need it.
mentally/emotionally stunted, lack of boundaries in rinks, being too sheltered and protected..... not to JUST blame the system around them, of course there is personal responsibility for ones actions, but the system definitely hurts young skaters more than it helps
figure skaters in the US (as I can only speak to my personal experience) typically are extremely sheltered even in the lower levels, kinda sad that it still seems to be the culture even now and USFS learned nothing from all the scandals in other sports
You all can argue over the lack of skating skills and the Japanese technique being superior. But someone like Ilia will keep winning by landing a few jumps. The esteemed choreographers can be offended by Ilia's homage, but he wins the medals
I don't know how someone like Dave who is himself an adult figure skating and went through the basic skills program and then freestyle levels could ever look at a professional figure skater and say they lack skating skills. It's wild. Presentation and skating skills are not the same thing. Illia has great skating skills. He needs to continue refining his interpretation, and he has been doing just that. The technical skills are the hardest to gain, so naturally, it's what's prioritized.
@@CaraMarie13this comment is wild. Many people, like parents, judges, officials, and even coaches (yes coaches too), will learn all the details of the sport and study technique. Being able to do correct technique, skating skills and such is very different than being able to identify technique. For example, judges go to “judges school” where they learn to identify elements, learn the qualify of elements and learn how to judge them.
They weren't supposed to be drinking in the dorm. The boy was a minor who has been dating one of the girls for a couple of years. She just turned 19 a couple of months ago so now she is considered adult. He was going to get in trouble for sneaking into the female dorm, but threw the girls under the bus instead. The "sexual assault" was a hickey he asked her to give him, but says he didnt know what it was. Looks like under pressure from the parents and lawyer most likely.
I don't like Madison Chock's wedding dress, either. Madison was gorgeous, as usual. She looked really happy and she was glowing. But that vertical gathering on the bodice makes it look cheap. I can't believe Vera Wang would ever put her name on that dress.
I didn’t mind the bodice at all. I thought the split was weird, but I don’t think I saw a really clear picture of the dress to know how I really feel about it.
All top teams right now have overstayed their welcome in ice dance. People jump to ageism, but we need fresh young teams like Marjo/Zach on top and they have proven to be at least world podium/olympic podium level. Come on italians, two P's and bock you guys have had two to three olympics and countless worlds to be on top. Time to hang it up. If you we're competitive when dominina and shabalin wore those awful costumes at Vancouver it's time to go into the retirement home of skating (ice shows/coaching or some adequate book deal). Snore.
I came over from Facebook, because I thought it would be interesting, but it reminded me why I can’t stand podcasts. It was so long and meandering; no visuals - I just kept waiting for it to become worth my while.
I blame KPOP.. I mean...the amount of money and time those people put into looking like slender, orphaned, porcelain anime , street hustler perfect doll figures is insane.
@@user-red47854 Meh. Kind of half hearted. The idea behind it is that a culture obsessed with the blemish-less, unoxidized perfection of youth, as represented in the smooth, slender, porcelain-esque figures of pop stars, will invariably turn itself into an unhealthy predatorial hierarchy of those seeking the promise of that youth. Unfortunately, this can lead to even the young and promising to pursue the even younger and less experienced. It's really not that unorthodox a theory. I feel like it's just slightly more jarring in this situation because A. the visual representation of Korean beauty; with the poreless white skin and abandonment of any musculature/tone in any gender expression, is in such a juxtaposition to the western more earthy, tan, imperfect vision of youth and vitality; and B. Females instigating inappropriate activity with younger males is always going to bring up themes that society finds discomfiting in ways we don't when the gender roles are reversed.
@@matthewhines9787They were both minors when they started dating. I agree the feminization of males there is a problem. She is only guilty of poor taste. He didn't have any problems until after he got caught in the dorm and faced punishment. After she turned 19 two months ago she should have waited 6 months to resume their relationship to be legal. But she was foolish. It was a hickey he asked for, not sexual assault.
@@joeyartk I wouldn't call it "feminization". I would call it...maybe a "distillation". Though the presentation is androgynous to the western eye, there are many pale, slender, floppy-haired men with swords or other weapons lurking in the shadows and saving the innocent. They are the heroes of the Anime and Manga. Besides, even if I'd call it feminization, I wouldn't labeled it a bad thing to be feminine.
I think she’s building her own niche into the sport via social media and this is admirable. I’ve never followed her for the skating, to be honest, because it didn’t attract me too much (music etc.) she seems like she’s grown and evolved so much tho!
Hey! It sounds like English isn’t your native language, so I just wanted to clarify something. When we say things like 'Japanese skaters have great posture and back position’ or ‘Americans are friendly,' it is understood that, on average, Japanese skaters tend to have great posture/back and Americans tend to be friendly compared to others. Of course, there are always exceptions and individual differences. It's just a general trend, not an absolute rule, in the English language. I hope this helps.

The only Russians I miss are Tuktamysheva and Kolyada.
Nolan was delightful! Thanks for the episode 💖
Glad you enjoyed it!
KMT got Meagan sidelined as a coach?? What have I missed? 😂👀
Yeah, please tell us more. Because if that's true, I've lost all respect for KMT (what business is it of hers) and secondly, WTH would she have that much power in Canada? 🤷♀️
Yey Nolan!! So fun!!
❤️❤️
what a surprise to see Nolan on here!! So great! Thanks for a great episode
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yay! Someone that serves the tea 🍵 and also knows the 90's and early 2000's lore. Hoping to see Nolan again.
I admit that was refreshing.
It could be like the "Real Housewives" franchise: The Real Skaters of the ISU."
The ISU and USSU need to take a book from gymnastics and show skating on TH-cam. US Gymnastics shows all the competitions on their channel. The BBC shows World Championships on TH-cam as well. I do plan to get Peacock for a month in order to watch Gymnastics in Paris.
Scott Bregman did a great job of expanding video access when he was at USAG.
all time run of amazing guests!
Athlete A is haein lee it’s been confirmed and her interview was very disgusting
What did she say?
There was an interview?
@@joeyartk She says when she first had relationship with him she was underage too.(she was 17 and he was 13)
She said they were in a relationship admitted to drinking and regretted it then said she worries more about the olympics than the minor she sexually assaulted when dating allegedly he was 13 when she 17
@nl887 17 and 13 means they were both minors.
“Is water wet?” Nice, Dave
I love Sasha Fear, her skating skills are phenomenal. I hope she comes back. Lilah really needs to work on her ankles and knees.
I heard Superstition by Stevie Wonder is a good choice.
The Lion King program was never going to work, it's such a shame they didn't do Madonna or Lady Gaga.
My favourite Lisa McKinnon was Ashley's Hip Hip Chin Chin dress.
Welcome Nolan!
❤️❤️
Manifesting Gracie Gold as the next US pairs figure skater 💪
Is Nolan in a cubicle in his bedroom? I'm kind of digging it, to be honest.
@skatinglesson should Lindsay switch feds since USFED hates her and she would do well if given opportunities
No. She wouldn't be released for years and her jumps would not magically become clean.
I’m w Team Nolan - having seen worlds I agree with his picks - and I def miss Trussova and Kosternia ❤
Ya. Walk me though how two college age girls “order” a high school age dude to come to their dorm room. This is not a thing. Sorry but there are differences.
Apparently haein was dating this minor
@@nl887 It looks like a failure of leadership more than anything else. In that 17-21 age bracket they will date and send boob pics when drinking. A and B both caught drinking multiple times. C goes to girls dorm without fear of consequences. And the coach gets a …3 month ban. And unfortunately Korea culture offers no second chances to celebs caught in scandals. Hope they all have good support network at home. They will need it.
Haein was grooming a 13 year old boy. The boy was 13 while Haein was 18. That's not normal.
Why can't she date a 16 or 17 year old boy at 18? Why did she specifically entertain a 13 year old kid?
@@savanahbabyyyy Oh wow. That’s not good. Thought it was more high school seniors and college age type shenanigans. Jeez.

No more "Hold an edge and look..." at the end, Dave? 🤗
Does anyone have any thoughts about why so many adult figure skaters are attracted to minors?
mentally/emotionally stunted, lack of boundaries in rinks, being too sheltered and protected..... not to JUST blame the system around them, of course there is personal responsibility for ones actions, but the system definitely hurts young skaters more than it helps
@@jamiejoonks Yikes! That's a lot to think about.
In Skater A’s case (Haein Lee), they had been dating a while since they were both minors
figure skaters in the US (as I can only speak to my personal experience) typically are extremely sheltered even in the lower levels, kinda sad that it still seems to be the culture even now and USFS learned nothing from all the scandals in other sports
@@slumberland969okay and allegedly she was 17 and he was 13 and her own family told her it wasn’t okay yet she still went along with it
You all can argue over the lack of skating skills and the Japanese technique being superior.
You do realize that many judges have never skated…
@@CaraMarie13 in russian we have a technical term for Ilia's "skills" - jackboots skate
when Japanese technology is one of the worst and most cheating. Example of Shoma and Kaori
Why is drinking alcohol punished? I dint get it.
the news outlets say they got a minor drunk, and sexually assaulted/molested him, and sent him naked photos.
the boy is 15
They weren't supposed to be drinking in the dorm.
@@joeyartknot knowing what it is and being unable to legally consent means this is likely statutory assault.

I don't like Madison Chock's wedding dress, either. Madison was gorgeous, as usual. She looked really happy and she was glowing. But that vertical gathering on the bodice makes it look cheap. I can't believe Vera Wang would ever put her name on that dress.
Vera did make those bizarre costumes for Nathan Chen!
@TheSkatingLesson Oh yeah, that. 😬

Thanks for watching
Most people do other things while listening to podcasts - no visuals necessary.
I blame KPOP.. I mean...the amount of money and time those people put into looking like slender, orphaned, porcelain anime , street hustler perfect doll figures is insane.
Dude, what logic do you have in your comment? Or is there logic? 😂
@@matthewhines9787 Feminine males don't bother me either. But with the Korean birthrate right now, they need all the testosterone they can get. Lol
What’s the logic for adult skaters to spend thousands of dollars on a costume? Especially if it’s only worn once?
Because they want to present themselves well and look their best - the same logic as an amateur skating doing it.

For the most part. One glaring omission but she more than makes up for it in different ways
