    Hello ladies! Thanks for the comments!
    If you allow the paint to dry before you peel the stencil the paint can stick to the stencil and peel up with it. This happens a lot when you paint a room and peel the painters tape off the trim. If you peel it off wet this won't happen.

      What size is the piece of wood? Is it a 1x4 or 2x6? And how thick is it?

    Why aren’t you doing more Cricut videos? I really liked this one and how you explained the process. I will say, I did get a little nervous when you were pulling that stencil off. I was afraid that some of the paint was going to flick back onto the wood. But your young not shaky hands were perfect. I love the saying too.

    I am curious as to why you didn't use transfer tape to transfer your stencil to prevent the trouble of trying to line up the center of the "d". Other than that, great video and it gives me sooooo many ideas to do for our home, so thank you.

      The tweezer things really do help. It is still really tricky, especially the smaller the letter is! i just do my best to make sure they don't touch anything since they have wet paint on them.

    I love the signs and I have zero experience (owned my own cricut for 5-6 yrs and have only removed it from the box once) but I wondered why you didn't let the paint dry before removing the stencil; wouldn't that be easier? Kim

      @crystallupal2316  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kim Donally oh my gosh get it out of the box lol! It is so much fun! I don't let the paint dry because it dries attaching itself to the stencil and when you lift the stencil paint comes up with it.

      Thanks! The mod Podge keeps the paint from bleeding around or under the stencil. I do not out a seal on them if they are for indoor use. If they are going to be outside then yes they will need one!

    Hi. New to Cricuting. I just tried to make a few stencils using contact paper (where I live, I don't know where to find actual stencil paper) but none of them really turned out so well. When I was weeding it, it seemed to pull things up that weren't supposed to be pulled up. I used another piece of contact paper on top as transfer tape. That wasn't so successful either. Any advice? Is contact paper a viable alternative to stencil paper? Thanks.

    • @crystallupal2316
      @crystallupal2316  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes contact paper is all I use now! Did you weed it in the vinyl setting? That's what I do and never have an issue weeding it? It's hard to tell without seeing it.

  • @whitneysmith2208
    @whitneysmith2208 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great tutorial! Does it make a difference if you use gloss vs. matte ModPodge? Or does the matte soak up the paint/leave a strange texture? If you wanted to have a sign for outdoors, what do you suggest to use to seal it so it doesn't get weathered too terribly quickly without making it super glossy?

    • @crystallupal2316
      @crystallupal2316  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whitney Smith Hey thanks so much! If you are using the sign outdoors you want to put a polycrylic on it to make it water proof. The type of modpodge doesn't matter as it will be underneath your paint. Hope that helps!

    • @whitneysmith2208

  • @margaretwilliams3362

    If you remove the stencil before the paint dries to keep the paint from pulling off, why doesn't the layer of Mod Podge keep the stencil from coming off? It seems to me that once the Mod Podge dried, the stencil edges would be glued down and wouldn't come off.

    • @crystallupal2316
      @crystallupal2316  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Margaret Williams that is a good question. I am not mod podging the pull stencil just the openings of where the letters are. The edges do not have mod podge on them so I am able to peel them up.

      Hello Lucy, thank you so much for your kind words. I use the mod podge to create a barrier so that the paint doesn't bleed under the stencil. I also do not treat my finished products as they are indoor signs but if they were an outdoor sign I would use a polycrylic over top! Hope that answers your questions!

    I love the idea of mod podge, I was wondering if that would work. I know with chalk paint you normally have to use the wax afterwards. Do you not do that? How well do your signs hold up? Does acrylic paint work with pod podge?

    • @crystallupal2316

      Crystal Lupai So, I tried this and some of the letters in my sign peeled from the mod podge, I think. Do you have any tips to avoid this?

    • @crystallupal2316
      @crystallupal2316  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kimber Redmond you have to peel your stencil off as soon as you paint it. Don't let it dry at all. And use chalk paint not acrylic.

    • @kimberredmond511
      @kimberredmond511 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      crystal lupal wow, you are fast! I️ painted the mod podge, let that dry, painted my first coat, let that dry (maybe 30 minutes), painted a second coat because it was too thin and then peeled the stencil off after 5 minutes or so so I️ wouldn’t get the paint everywhere. Is that too long?

    what type of stain do you use? i've made several signs and sometimes i struggle with the stencil sticking to the sign, or the paint not sticking to the stain. oil based? water based? have you had any struggles with this?

    • @crystallupal2316
      @crystallupal2316  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amber Anderson I have not had any issues with my stain. I am using a wood stain from home Depot but I don't know the exact name or type. I let it fully dry at least 12-24 hours before painting though. it may be your paint that is the issue as well. I use chalk paint and have the best results. acrylic paint lifts right off!

    • @amieebeauchamp7572

      Minwax has water based stains in lots of colors. You can even mix them to get the color you want. Easy clean-up and I have had no problems with them. You can find them at Home Depot, Lowes, Menards or any hardware store.

    • @pyier13
      @pyier13 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i believe the mixing was in reference to different shades/colors of the minwax stain to get a custom stain color.

    How come you don't have to make bridges for letters in text when using vinyl? I use blank plastic stencil sheets and have to make bridges for certain letters.

    • @crystallupal2316
      @crystallupal2316  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diana L I am not really sure what a bridge is.

    • @CaliTexan
      @CaliTexan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you cut letters out, some letters need bridges to hold the middle of the letter in place. Like for example if I don't make a bridge for the letter, "O" and the cricut cuts it out, it's going to look like a circle instead of the letter, "O". Here's a link to show you. www.google.com/search?q=stencil+bridges&hl=en&site=webhp&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjOv_a59rHVAhXLlVQKHa93DN8Q_AUICigB&biw=1366&bih=638#imgrc=z2r0jZrcxb9lhM:

      Ok I see what you mean. When cutting with vinyl I don't need to do that because the vinyl is in a backing paper so once I cut out the words I want I week the words out and am left with everything perfectly in place. The middles of the letters all stay stuck to the backing.

    • @CaliTexan
      @CaliTexan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh ok, I understand now why it wouldn't work the same way with plastic. Thanks for your help.

      Cindy Zellner I do not reuse my stencils. They are so inexpensive to make that it isn't worth it for me to have to wash them while not getting the sticky back wet and I am not overly careful when pulling them up they often rip or I even cut them.

    To put stencil on..might be easier then you don't have to manually out the middle parts on. 😀

    • @crystallupal2316
      @crystallupal2316  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it would be easier. I try to save money and not use transfer tape unless it is absolutely needed so didn't really think of it. Thanks for the idea!

    When you do the cut what do you have the dial set at?

    • @crystallupal2316
      @crystallupal2316  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jessica Schmidt I set the dial to custom and choose the stencil material setting. If you find it doesn't cut well enough then leave it in when it finishes cutting (don't release the feed) and hit the cut button on the machine (flashing Cricut) to cut it a second time

    Did you use transfer tape?

    • @crystallupal2316
      @crystallupal2316  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      On this video I did not because the Cricut stencil material is really thick and doesn't bend on small projects like this easily but for anything bigger I used contact paper as transfer paper.

      Kristen Cruse I do not, it would just make a mess. I have started using contact paper as well as it is cheaper and I just throw it out and make a new one for the next project.

    • @crystallupal2316

      Joseph Kirk thanks for your question! the mod podge keeps the paint from bleeding underneath the stencil. it creates a barrier on the edges of the stencil!
