Simple additions to Bolt Action kits

  • Hello everyone and welcome back to the channel! This video has been inspired by a number of comments that were left on another video and related to what steps can be taken to add variety or simple additions to already existing plastic kits. This is different from my other kitbashing videos as these are relatively simple steps that can be taken that are quick and easy to achieve and also relatively inexpensive.
    The first technique that we will look at is taking historically accurate weapons from other plastic kits and simply seeing how these can be used to make unique and individual looking figures and sections. With sites like eBay and others where you can pick up individual spues and other bits and pieces, this is a great way of mixing up different kits with very little work involved.
    The second part of the video shows how you can use captured enemy weapons to make a section look like it is in the middle of combat and has quickly grabbed a fallen weapon. Used sparingly, this can really add a unique look and flavour to an individual model or section.

    I also made an anti-tank rifle team for my mid-war Germans using the PRTD-41 from the Soviet sprue, because I hate working with metal minis. But it's very easy to justify, because Germans used captured Soviet AMR's all the time - in fact they had a designation for it, called the PzB 783(r).

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can certainly see that looking pretty cool. But yeah, I'm like you in that I'm really not a fan of working with metal miniatures or parts and prefer to keep everything plastic as far as I can. In fact it was probably this reason that I started kitbashing so extensively in the first place! That's are conversion that I'm going to have to try in the future 😊

    Very nice kitbashes sir, i feel like warlord give so many posibilities to their sprues, you can create so many unique poses.. Nice painted of them.👍

      Thanks Lucian and I agree absolutely with you there. The range of bits and pieces that you get on the plastic Warlord sprues can be made in so many different ways. But when you start adding arms and weapons from other kits, it just makes the options endless 😊

    Well done Ste. Nice to see a new video with some good simple ideas to provide variety to the figure sets.

      Thanks Leslie! Yup, there's nothing overly complex or groundbreaking here, just a bit of kit combination and figuring out what works and what doesn't. I'm not sure I could just build straight out of the box anymore, I'm always looking for ways to add to them to make them a bit unique to me 😊

    Some really nice ideas there Ste. I like to try and do similar things with some of my Ancients. When I did my Celts, I threw in a few Roman helmets, weapons and shields just for variety and (possibly contentious, but I would argue) realism. 😂

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Jim! I think adding really simple bits and pieces to figures really does help them look unique and bring a bit of realism to them. I can definitely see a Celt warrior deciding to make use of a spare Roman helmet or shield though 😁

      Cheers Sean, much appreciated mate! Yup, kitbashing still remains one of my favourite parts of the hobby and I'm always looking for new ways and techniques. I've actually used kitbashing quite sparingly on my current Polish Airborne project but I'm going to be cobbling together some plastic crews for the medium machine gun and mortar teams. That should be interesting 😊

      Cheers Guy, much appreciated! It's definitely one of my favourite parts of the hobby, looking for those different combinations from various kits. • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers James! Again I think this just shows the versatility of the Warlord plastics. Some things are clearly not going to work but for the most part, there will always be something that can be swapped, used or tweaked slightly and, boom, you have the kitbash or conversion you were after! My SAS desert raiders were a prime example of that 😀

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video mate! Great work as usual, I think advice like this is like gold dust. You’ll be pleased to know I took your advice on board and my airborne are now sporting Thompson’s from the US infantry kit and the British 8th Army sprues! There might even be an MP-40 sneaked in there if you look closely! As always, keep up the great work pal!

    So happy I subscribed to your channel. Very informative and entertaining. The skills you display and explain show just how much fun the modeler/gamer can have individualising (???) these figures. You have a real knack for animation and creating wee characters that 'pop' and interest. It MIGHT interest you to know that the Germans, toward the end of the war as production was hampered by shortages of raw materials, created the MP3008 which was largely based on the British Sten SMG. (The main difference was that the MP3008's magazine was mounted under the body of the weapon, like the MP40, but otherwise it looks just like a Sten! A possible future 'kit-bash' for you there!!!!!) As production became more difficult for the Gerries as the Allied bombing drastically impacted German manufacturing, 'machined' parts, (requiring precision engineering tools) were often replaced by 'stamped' components which were easier and quicker to produce. (This is obvious if you compare the early 'first' model FG42 Fallschirmjager combat rifle (with machined parts) to the 'second' model FG42 with 'stamped' components.) Please do a Late-war Gerry armed with an MP3008, if only because fellow-gamers will think you've made a terrible mistake!!!! (But you won't have!!!) Keep the videos coming, Mate, fantastic channel. xx SF

      Hey Steve, thanks again for your kind feedback and a really interesting suggestion for a future kitbash. That is one I'm definitely going to be looking into!
      I certainly think that this is one of the benefits of working with pretty much plastic kits only, there is always so much scope for changing or converting a figure to make it wholly new and unique to your own specific army. Whether it's something as simple as using different arms or something a bit more complex involving 3-4 different kits, I think I'm always going to try and come up with something different. My SAS desert raiders were a great example of small conversions being used across a whole project 😊

      Thank you and welcome to the world of Bolt Action! I definitely agree with you there, I much prefer working with plastic kits as there's certainly more scope for kitbashing and creating your own unique units. Thank you, much appreciated! I would say that I'm very much like you, I primarily see myself as a painter/modeller but I still like to game when I can. The current plastic range from Warlord Games for Bolt Action are fantastic and certainly I'd definitely recommend them. The kits scale really well and many are compatible with other kits as this video hopefully showed 😀

    Lovely video mate and proper useful for bringing in some character and making things a lil different. For “liberated” weapons the Germans did this all the time calling them Beutewaffen. My pioneers have a few Soviet PPSHs and my veteran soviets have a couple MP40s. Weirdly the Germans preferred soviet guns and the Soviets preferred German 😂

    what is the material that u use to hold the models to the board? it looks like roof material

    • @OnPointHQ

      It's just really simple blu-tac that I use. The board is black cardboard that I originally used to make a very basic board for X-Wing before I got my mat. That's why it has flecks of white over some of them 😊

    I don't understand the meaning of "cut the bottom off the cuff' What is 'the cuff bottom' and what tools are you using to cut it off?

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Dane, apologies I could have probably worded that better! The winter German arms have a prominent cuff line on their greatcoats. Sometimes I'll leave it on or I'll remove it. To do do this I either use a craft knife to carefully cut away the cuff line or just add a bit of green stuff to hide it. I think it looks OK either on or off but it's not overly difficult to remove. Hope that explains it a bit better ☺👍

      @@OnPointHQ Thanks for the detail, now I understand. I just built my first plastic kit (Waffen SS inf box) and I have a Blitzkrieg set that I could conceivably use the bits for.

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I like about the plastic box from Warlord Games. With the Blitzkrieg Germans, as that is one of the older kits, it may look slightly smaller next to some of the modern kits but you shouldn't have too much trouble with them ☺

    For conversion/kitbash Finnish infantry, what German sprues would you recommend with Soviet weapons sprues? 🤔

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A very interesting question! This is something that I've been thinking about for a while now. I even mentioned it on our podcast a few weeks ago. I'd probably go for the Blitzkrieg German sprue as the uniform is the closest to that of the Finnish. There would need to be a few alterations to the equipment etc but I think these would work pretty well. A project that is definitely on my to do list 😀

    • @senint
      @senint ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnPointHQ Aye, that same was in a web blog I’ve found in Warlord Games articles page. Same blog had also mentioned German infantry sprues sold only in Warlord’s webstore, where only the boots required some modification.
      I also have a faint memory of some folk recommending to use WWI German infantry from Wargames Atlantic, but I’ll have to see them myself with Finnish WWII photographs next to them for reference (to help imagine if they are close enough for an easy conversion).

  • @HeadHunterSix

    I'm thinking of giving some SVT-40s to my mid-war Germans. I'm sure that in Stalingrad they'd happily make use of any of these they could find - and as you say, a rifle is a rifle so they're still list-legal. Unfortunately my mid-war chaps can't use an Avtomat or an MkB-42 because it would be fun to give assault rifles to mid-war Germans, wouldn't it? :D

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm pretty sure that in the middle of Stalingrad, you'd be happy to have any kind weapon! But that would really look pretty cool and again add a bit of variety and 'in combat' feel to the section. Excellent idea!
      Assault rifles in mid-war would be rather cool although given the low numbers or the MkB made it would be a really rare weapon to possess 😀

      Hey Terry. Yes I'm pretty lucky in that the plastic kits from Warlord Games are multi part with lots of options thrown in. Having worked on the one ECW box, I could see there wasn't much scope for conversions. I guess because it's larger units of rank and file they felt that keeping the poses relatively the same was probably the easiest way to go ☺
