To repaint or not - Repainting my Bolt Action German Army

  • Hello everyone and welcome back to the channel and a video about a quandary that I've had for a little while.....should I repaint my Bolt Action German army? Regular viewers of the channel will know that over the past three years or so I have built and painted a pretty sizeable army Bolt Action German army that currently comes in at around 6000 points.
    Recently I have been comparing this to my current projects and the way that I paint these days. We all evolve as painters and I would certainly say that I am a different painter to the one of three years ago. Rather than repaint or overhaul the entire army in one go, I focused on a list that I have put together for an upcoming game of Bolt Action. This is the 'Holding the West Wall' theatre selector from the Armiesof Germany book.
    In this video I will show how some of the older figures were painted and why I wasn't happy with them but also show you the repainted army so far!

    A lovely collection of trees!. Lots of lovely figures, just continue with the over haul.

      Thanks Leslie, I thought the background could be a bit more interesting so I dug out the trees! I was certainly a little hesitant about starting this but now I've completed the first 1000 points I'm glad that I did. The next step is to separate out and repaint my Fallschirmjager for the Lions of Carentan theatre selector 😀

    Those new bases are a game changer!

      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Sam, much appreciated! When I compared these to the basing on much recent projects there was really no comparison. I think that just by adding the new basing materials, it has made the army look a lot more cohesive and uniform. I always appreciate a good basing scheme so my original basing for these was very dull in comparison. Really glad I made the effort 😀

      That's awesome, thank you so much! It can be quite daunting when starting to repaint but sometimes all it takes is just small additions to really improve them. I kept things very basic with these as I knew overworking them was the wrong way to go about it. Very happy with these 😀

    I don’t see anything wrong with revisiting old projects and bringing them up to date. We are all developing our hobby skills

      Definitely agree with this Andy. Having looked at my German army compared to the projects I have completed over the past 18 months or so, I can certainly see where I have improved as a painter. I think it's a case, like you say, of constantly developing new skills 😀

    Looks good, touching up key details is definitely the way to go - I never want to repaint older projects completely, but picking out the main highlights and sprucing up the bases can update the entire appearance

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was definitely my approach to it. I didn't want to start the entire thing from scratch so worked out just what needed to be done to make them stand out. It really didn't take too long to get this much done 😀

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers mate! I really enjoyed painting and basing the PAK40 but it definitely needed a bit of a rework to fit in with the rest of the army. Not a lot of actual work was needed but still very happy with the results 😀

  • @BethorInvictus
    @BethorInvictus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    leave them, you've grown and by leaving them you have your benchmark to see how you've grown. But ultimately what you feel comfortable with. The new ones look better, but once again it shows how much you've grown and you should be proud to show that.

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was really tempted to just leave them alone but they looked utterly dull in comparison to my other armies. An example of this is my Australian army - the paint job could probably be a lot better but I'm still happy with the basing and the overall look of the project. I'm definitely a lot happier with the German army the way it looks now 😀

    • @BethorInvictus
      @BethorInvictus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnPointHQ haha ultimately you should do what makes you feel best. Still at least keep on model as it is now. It is good to have some reference to your skill improvement 🙂

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, glad that you're so pleased with them, they really look terrific- but I thought the Pre-repainted ones looked pretty stellar as well, you're very talented both then and now! Would love to see some how-to-paint guides for some of these armies.

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome thank you! Like I said it did take me a while to take the plunge and start to repaint them. There was certainly nothibg wrong with them before but much happier with them now. I'm definitely considering putting more painting videos on the channel moving forward 😀

    • @aWOLtrooper
      @aWOLtrooper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnPointHQ It's kind of a selfish request- As someone who's colorblind, the guides really help me, and I'm always looking for different variations that may pop a bit more than my current paint jobs. I'd love to see how you got your results.

  • @braddoc4087

    Yeah, they look good! I admit I got the same fgeeling, looking at old models painted years ago versus those paitned currently...personally I'd leave it as that, if only to 'show off' how your painting skills advanced 'this squad was painted first, but *this* one I did last week, you can really see the difference!'

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was definitely in that frame of mind too. I initially raised the idea of repainting them last year but people advised against it. There was just an overall look that I wasn't happy with. Having worked on these first 1000 points I'm glad that I started now 😀

    The pak 40 is superb 👌 👏 a diorama on itself. The bazuka guy broke his shovel in a fight. Very nice refreshing on the base and skins. Maybe use pink or red on some lips. Some of them look like ghosts. I would push it even farther with edge highlights, but it is just me, becouse if it is on the tabletop they need to pup. Then your opponent would not take his eyes from your army. And will look. Great work!

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Lucian, I think the PAK40 is one of my favourite Bolt Action pieces and the repaint work has certainly improved it. The broken shovel was down to me trying to get it back straight during painting! Yup, I don't think I'll ever be comfortable painting flesh but I can certainly see what you mean 🙂

    As long as there's Slayer happening, no decision can be wrong. Although when I saw them at Donnington in 2004 (I think), there were definitely some guys in the crowd who'd made some poor decisions, lol... Loving this channel, thank you. Played BA for the first time last week and it's a great system. Going to start with a Japanese force and see where the game takes me after 35 years of mostly just 40k.

      Cheers Lee! Slayer are normally the soundtrack to most of my painting sessions, definitely not a bad decision!
      Ahh sweet, welcome to the world of Bolt Action. I have faced my mate's IJA on many occasions and they can be a very difficult force to go up against so I'm pretty sure you'll have a lot of fun working on them. Really glad you like the channel and thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 😃🤘

      @@OnPointHQ thank you buddy. For me it's Tool, no doubt that'll be going on while I'm building and painting my first bunch of Japanese mini's. Can't wait to get started. My mate Mel (The Terrain Tutor) plays Chindits and playing those on his Big Burma Build table will be pretty appropriate. I'll have to go for a swarmy banzai approach for my first game with him, then maybe add some elites and other bits and bobs to keep him guessing (I guess the Banzai charge is something that players can learn to neutralise to some degree). I just love the mechanics of BA, it's fast and just so suitable for both a fun game, and one that at least feels a little more realistic than other games I play.

    Ste the old paint jobs were nice and a lot would kill to have troops that look that good but we all evolve. I'm the same returning to older armies, very hard to see past the things that I know I would do better now, and I often end up selling them as a result. I love the approach you have taken here, they look great, and you've not had to start again from scratch either.

      Cheers Stu! It took me a good long while to make the decision to revamp these. I'm a good portion through the whole thing now and definitely glad that I started to rework them 😀

    Your minis are wonderful, as usual.
    Are you using a single, yellowish bulb for your lighting? It appears so. I highly recommend replacing that bulb with a bright, white light bulb. You will be amazed at how much better your minis will look on screen. Cheers!

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers and thanks for the advice! I currently use two lamps - one is a yellow bulb and the other is a white strip bulb. I definitely have plans to replace the lamp with the yellow bulb soon 😀

    • @drblasphemy
      @drblasphemy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnPointHQ that's great news! That yellow bulb is overpowering and I suspect it's causing the different colors to blend instead of stand apart.
      Keep up the good work. You're a very creative modeler (I, too, prefer plastic to metal. LOL) and your videos are always enjoyable to watch.

    Great video...did I hear you say the army points were 994?....sounds like space to squeeze another cheeky panzerfausts in somewhere.....I use inexperienced troops quite a bit.....just don't forget the addition roll for improvement on the Volks Grenadiers if they successfully upgrade on the first roll...and I love Ostruppen too. 40 pts for 10 riflemen, but remember always need order checks and pins count double.

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Rich! Yup, 994 points so there is definitely some wriggle room in adding a few panzerfausts. It's definitely going to be something new for me as I am used to running smaller all veteran forces. But I'm really looking forward to the unpredictable nature of an all experienced army 😀
