- Simple thing I found that works to keep stingy critters at bay.
Stuff a small brown paper bag with some wadded up newspaper. or those ads you get in the mail.
Make it round looking by tucking in the bottom corners, twisting the top closed, and tie it off.
Fasten it under the eves of your home. I used a drywall screw to fasten mine but a staple gun would work too.
Beauty is as beauty does, so to me it's beautiful because it works beautifully.

You're welcome! This is the first year in 7 years that I've had a wasp nest, but that's to be expected because it's starting to look like a worn out bag instead of a hornet nest.
Hi all, just to explain how to use this setup, you MUST FIRST eradicate any existing wasps or wait until winter, clear any nests out, then put this up. This is going on the 6th year of these hanging under our front and back eaves and no wasps or bees nesting on or near our house. They still frequent our flowers but no nests. I was thinking of replacing them this coming fall because they are starting to degrade. The next ones will get a generous coat of clear matt paint to protect them from the elements.

Tried it! I had a red wasp infestation. So I built several of these and put one one my front porch, two on my back porch, one under my gable on the North side of my house, and one under the eaves on the East side of my house. My neighbors thought they were real wasp nests, so I know I did them correctly.
Over the next two weeks I got stung on my back several times, one smacked me in the face and stung me multiple times, my husband got stung, and my children got stung! So, after the two weeks, I called an exterminator, because those red wasps weren't budging, even after I sprayed them all with foam insecticide THREE TIMES.The exterminator sprayed, and within two days they were all gone. I have that guy on a quarterly spray contract now at $90/quarter - so worth it!
It's definitely worth the money to hire an exterminator if you have a serious infestation of wasps and yellowjackets.
Before the decoy nests will work, you have to get rid of what is already there.

I am excited about trying this, Ron! I had a big hive in the clapboard siding of my house removed 7 years ago & they are baaaack! 3 Beekeeper's said they would be back, but no show and the price keeps going up. My neighbor, a city commish keeps getting stung and has filed a nuisance lawsuit against me- well, for chickens & cats too, but the bees aren't helping. Time to take action- cant wait for daylight! Let you know!
Used to get Solitary wasp nests in the shed. Kept moving them, kept getting them until I was told to keep the old nest up instead of moving it. Never got another.
someone told me you had to destroy the old net so they did smell it and rebuild there
I heard about this a few years ago. I have a Mimosa Bush that was always covered with wasp's. I tied that paper bag on a branch and those wasp's never came back!
Yup! I'm going to have to make more as the ones I have are starting to disintegrate. But they still work.

I tried this last year and it really worked. As time goes by you do need to replace it. But it really did work.
We sprayed 20 nests on my property over the weekend. They just come back. I was stung in the process. I didn't know that wasp could make you so sick. The venom from the sting caused me to have nausea, vomiting, fever, headache, joint aches. These are not to be taken lightly. I have six kids out here running around. Yes I will try your bag method. Hi Donna, Just make sure to fold in the corners of the bag and try to round it off as much as possible to make it look as much like a hornet's nest as possible. I believe this is what made the ones I have work so well (one under front eves and one under back eaves). We've had trouble with wasps and hornets every year until last year when I did this. This year still nothing.

Hi Donna. I know this is an old post, but wanted to throw my three cents into the pot (hey, I'm a big spender... hehehe!) One thing you might need to be concerned with is Anaphylactic shock. In mild cases they symptoms are similar to what you suffer from. But it's possible over time (even without more stings) to develop this issue - and it can be VERY serious (as in "call 9-1-1 and hope EMS gets here in time" serious). The great news is you can ask your dr. for an Rx for an "Epi-Pen" and it's something that fits in a purse or pocket. If you get stung, and have ANY difficulty breathing CALL 9-1-1 immediately! If you have an Epi-Pen, use it. If you don't have one, pray. Not trying to be sarcastic at all, but people die every year from this issue. Talk to your doctor, explain your history and concerns and ask for a prescription. When my son was 4 he got stung on his ear - swelled up the size of a baseball. Scared us - a lot! Talked to the doc, checked our family history and he now carries an Epi-Pen everywhere. Thank God he's never needed it. And you may not need one either - but DON'T rely on some doof (me) giving you medical advice (I'm not - just making suggestions).
Please ask your doctor about it. It may not be the answer, but you gotta ask the questions before you get answers! Good luck, hope your kids are growing strong and healthy (oh, and YOU too!).
Thanks for the info. I heard about this process but was very unsure it would work. I will make some and place them around my house and shed tomorrow. I heard vinegar also works. Make solution with water and put in hand sprayer and cover the areas the bees like to go to.
I did this and my Wasps.... carpenter bees.... and flys are GONE

Best time to kill wasps is at night. They return to their nest at night and sleep. If you remove nest during the day, the ones that were away from the nest will return looking for it and start building another

Bees are not an issue! Bees, specially honey bees don’t care to bother humans. Wasps and hornets are an issue though.
I assume that the idea behind using the bag is that if there is already a "hornet hive" aka the paper bag, then other hornets and wasps would assume the territory is taken and move on?
Absolutely correct. The more effort you put into making it look the shape of a nest, the better it will work. Year two has passed and no nests. A few bees frequent my wife's flowers but that's all.

Can you use the small paperbags? Or maybe even plastic bags?
I live in rural area and have so many. They even make nest in my side mirrors on car or inside door area. Thats what I'm fighting now. I got the nest but the queen chases me away from my car. I've spray it with 2 cans of killer to try to make her leave but she persistent!
Before these will work effectively, you have to rid the current nests, or put them up and wait til next year. As long as you make it look like a hornet's nest, I recently painted mine a light gray, you should be fine. The more effort you put in to making it round and not look like a McD bag haing up, the better it should work.
I used a del taco paper bag in my shed where I kept getting swarmed by wasps every time I opened the door. Haven't seen one wasp in my shed since I put the bag up on a nail on the wall.

I don't see a hive anywhere, just 3-5 always seem to be hanging out in my carport. Even with no nest, would it keep them out of there? I'll have to test it I suppose

I learned of this trick from the Amish but we hang it in the opposite direction like how a balloon hangs from a string but I guess either way works we also spray a light coating of acrylic spray from Wal-Mart for weather proofing. It does like he says keep hornets, wasp, yellow jackets, bald face hornets from making nest .we live in southern Missouri by the Missouri/Arkansas state line and during warm months theses type of little SOB's make nest every where but last year no problem due to these fake nests! we put one on the back side of the house and in the front of the house no problems! we don't even find nest in the yard! you can also make others if you have sheds or garages etc in the yard incase they don't see the ones hanging from the house. you fill the bag full Wal-Mart bags or other types of water resistant filler product to fill and puff up the bag. Any size but preferably a larger brown paper bag from store . use brown only or can spray bag gray to mimic nest better but brown works. seal up open end of bag so bugs cant make a nest inside.
Thanks for the props Jeramiaha! I've not sprayed my decoy nest with acrylic, but what a great idea! So far it has lasted in all the wet weather we have here in Washington state, but to make it last linger?? Why not!? One mistake I've seen with many who try to do this is they don't try to shape their bag to resemble a true nest. I believe that made all the difference for me. We had hornets nesting somewhere on our property EVERY year and wasps under various portions of our eves as well until I did this. Now? Nothing.
I was concerned about the rain, since we don't have much of an overhang. I'll have to try the acrylic spray. I was thinking of shellac, but I wondered if the smell would tip them off.

Diane, I put mine under the eves of our house to keep them dry, this is starting the 3rd year they have been up and still no stingy flying insects.

Just make sure and attempt to round it off as best as possible to make it look like a hornet's nest. I tucked the bottom corners in and twisted the top to give it a nice rounded appearance. All the best with you new decoy/s!

We're coming up on our 5th season with these same to decoys and still have had no nests around our home.
Well, I’m afraid I struck out. It did not work. I did however discover an insecticide that has gotten ride of ALL wasps and the Wood bees that were destroying my house have been reduced by 99.9%, so I’m happy.
@@gregwebb7530 The first year, I had to make sure all the nests were gone and found some that I missed. Once I got rid of them, no more arrived. This is our fifth year with these decoys up and still none are nesting around our home. Just make sure you do your best to make the bags resemble a hornets nest by tucking in the corners of the bag, stuffing it with newspaper or something, and rounding the top off as best you can.

Thanks for sharing! Have had luck with hanging some small lunch bags but I really like the idea of just sticking or attaching them to a surface to be still.
Pls explain more, what is it about this trick that will keep them away? I have bees that come to my screen door as soon as i open my door? Why ? Icant go out during the day? Omg im terrified!! Dora, the decoy hornet nests will deter not just other hornets but other flying stingy insects from building nests near them. They are territorial and will not allow others to nest near them. These phony nests make others believe that area is already occupied. However, if you have flowers, all will frequent like bees and stuff but will not nest near there. If you already have bees, wasps, or hornets nesting nearby, you have to get them eradicated first. There are people that will come out and collect bees for free here in WA to populate their own hives. Some will come out and dispatch other nests too. Check in your area.
It's so that the Red Wasps won't get their young / lavae eaten by Hornets (The bag resembles a Hornet's nest)
Confession time: it didn’t work for my log home. Traps helped minimally, but it seems that an insecticide designed for crops has proven to be effective. Nuprid (May be be marketed under a different name) has eliminated my Carpenter Bee problem and seems to have thinned out Wasp traffic substantially. Now, some may take issue with using a chemical but I’m jot the least bit sorry. My house was literally being eaten away by insects and I had to preserve my home.
I put out hummingbird feeders will the fake hornets nest keep the hummingbirds away. Cause I don't want that.
If humming birds were bigger, they would kill us all! Ha ha! I've had hummingbird feeders out long before I had these decoys and they are afraid of nothing. I've watched them dual on many occasions. They will even feed when I'm only feet away.
Going to dig under my sink right now for a paper bag. Worth a shot!

I just bought a new townhouse and have come to realize it is one big wasp nest -- I can hear them drilling in the walls and they are behind the louver shudders and up in the soffits AND in the rolled up garde hose and have had Carpenter bees eating my deck, Bald-faced hornets as well. Will this method scare them away or just prevent them from coming back next year ????. The eaves are 3 stories up and I have no way of hanging a decoy up there unless I use an extension ladder and wire and I risk getting attacked.
I believe you must eradicate them first. I put mine up and still had some living under the shudders. I got rid of them and this is the 3rd year with no more nests on or around our house. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't worry about bumblebees ....they are actually very friendly, like flying Panda Bears lol Non aggressive and shouldn't sting unless provoked 😊

I literally have 2 yellow jackets swarming around me as I am texting this… I’m going to try your suggestion but also is there something I do like right this second like a noise LOL oh my God these things are scary literally it’s right next to me I’m like running I don’t wanna kill them because Idk are they important… Or is that just bees? Hi Becca Boo, personally I swat them with something and move to an area they can't get to me. Yes, wasps provide food for some animals but as you mentioned, bees are VERY important for pollination among other things. That said, even if I had a nest of bees around my house, I would eradicate it. They will move on to more suitable areas. These decoy hornets nests are to keep other flying stingy insects from nesting on or near your home or where ever you put them. I watch the bees, wasps, and hornets frequenting my wife's herb garden and flowers but none of them nest near our home due to the phony hornets nests I've put up under the eves of the front and back of our home.
Step 1: Find their nest and remove it. This usually means to kill the wasps, but if you know a bee person or are brave enough, there are ways to remove the nest without killing them. I tend to wait until nightfall so they aren't swarming.
Step 2: Make and install a phony hornets nest (they now sell them online).
We've gone through Summer 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 with no nests on or near our home all from a couple of brown paper bags stuffed with wadded up news paper, corners tucked in and rounded, the top opening twisted closed, and fastened under the eves, on in front and one at the rear, with screws.

DearJRenae yes, actually it reduced them by 75% 🙌 we have them so bad here in the woods where I live. I don’t want to spray poison everywhere so I loved this idea 💡

So far so good. It's a bit early for wasps to start nesting here in Washington state, but for the past 4 years, it's worked great. I may need to replace the one in the front because it's starting to degrade from blowing rain and stuff. Next one will get sprayed with some sort of sealer to protect it from the elements a little better.

what kind of bag do I need to use and what did you stuff in the bag to make them look like hives?
Shontai, I used a brown paper bag similar to what you would get from a fast food restaurant, maybe a little larger. I waded up newspaper and stuffed it in the bag, folded the bottom corners in and rounded them by hand as best I could. I twisted the top and this made the bag sort of teardrop in appearance resembling a hornet's nest. So far they have worked great for me.

There is a really bad hornet problem in my apartment complex. Been having issues for the past 2 1/2 years. I can't open my front door in the morning without seeing them hoovering around all outside my door! It's RIDICULOUS! I am EXTREMELY horrified of them! My fear is that one day, while hurrying down the sidewalk to try avoiding them, that I'm going to call and end up getting attacked! Even the maintenance over here seems to be reluctant to solve the problem or deal with them(they suck).
What about the paper bag makes them stay away? I would love to try this just to see if it would keep them away from in front of my door. Is all I need is a paper bag? Anything put on the inside?
Key Toole you put newspaper inside and once wasp were making a nest on my patio And I thought one day a wasp will sting me for getting to close
It's not the paper bag, but shaping it to resemble a hornets nest. Hornets are very territorial and will not allow others to nest near by. Other flying stingy insects know this and keep away from hornets nest (or hornets nest decoys).
I would advise you to search for someone that captures bees, some will come out, find and capture other such critters and remove them. This must be done before the decoys will work. Once cleared of hornets, wasps, or other such critters, the decoys will keep them away.
We are on our 3rd year with nothing but our decoys in front and back. The bees and others still frequent flowers around the yard, but none nest anywhere near by.
@@cell-zb6ux Thanks for the advice. I called and reported the issue to my leasing office and they claimed they called someone to come and take care of the issue. They say the hornets had their nest in the ground, not in the trees. So we'll see if whatever they decide to do works.

Will this work on Red Wasps?
In general, Hornets are the badest on the block with large nests. They are very territorial too. I had red wasps when I lived in Texas but we don't have them in Washington state, so I can't attest to it working for those too. However, these same bags shaped like hornets nests and hung under the front and rear eves has kept ALL flying stingy insects away for going on 3 years now.
I prefer killing them one by one, sort of manned combat with aliens. So far, the aliens are winning big time. :)

I put 3 of these up in the spring in the back yard. We spend a lot of time out there and they kept running us back inside. I have probably seen 2 back there since. Yesterday we noticed a hornet nest in the tree In the front yard. 😣 I had to call someone to remove it and I will be putting a couple of my paper bag hives out there asap
Hmm very interesting. Will it deter ground bee's like bumble bee's or yellow jackets? I've been trying real hard to make some bumbles under my drive way move without killing them. Repeated vinegar, cinnamon, soapy water, flooding. I got pissed & pored some bad gas in the crack. Still there smh. Last night I sprayed wasp spray down the crack. They are still there! Would the bag detour them?
If you have eradicated them, now is the time to make a decoy. Hornets are very territorial and with a decoy nest there, they shouldn't come back.
This didn't work for me. Put 2 up even. Was so disappointed as these wasps are piling up under my basement stoop light cover. I can't get in or out of basement at night with light on. Any other ideas That u know work

@@ronscrazystuff3793 I have no idea where the main nest is. They come swarm the basement light making it impossible for me to get in and out of basement. Good to know that if I ever find the main hive my hung ball bag nests will work.
Yeah, those pesky critters can be a pain to find sometimes. But if you can't find them and do put up decoys, at least next year, you won't have to worry about them.

Lisa, I believe you may have some success using a homemade wasp trap. Check out YELLOW JACKET TRAP by Don the fat bee man. I plan on giving it a try at our neighborhood park where people have been complaining about ground hornets. For now, at least here anyway, there are no more flying stingy insects.. too cold. But next year this technique should work quite well. All the best!

Sorry to hear that. So far, it's worked for us. Last year, nothing and previous years there were always wasps and hornets making nests in our eves. Hoping this year it will still work.

It will keep them from building hives near where ever you place this. However, if they have already built a hive, you'll have to remove them first then they won't come back.
Honey bee's you want to be careful with because the stinger stays in where they sting you
Honey bees are absolutely important! If you have honey bees and want them gone, call your local bee keepers and they will come take them off your hands for free. Please, call bee keepers

Just saw three flys near my paper bag and also just saw a wasp flying around. And i made my paper bag perfect. Looks just like a hornets nest. It is not hanging in the wind. It is pined stationary in a corner of the carport roof just like where a hornets nest would be.

I understand now. It is a long term effect. Wasp may be looking, but they dont build. I have one at another location that flys into a column out of sight. I dont know if it is building or not. This wasp was there before I put the bag though. We are so used to spaying and getting instant results that when something works naturally and overtime, our brains cant handle it yet. We are sort of like the wasp in a way. Trained only one way.

Hi Janet, All I did was use a lunch bag size brown bag, stuffed it full of wadded up news paper, twisted the tip and tied it off (I used tape), folded the corners in on the bottom, and worked it until it was a nice round shape similar to a hornets nest.

How do these things work?
Hornets are very territorial and pretty much hold the title of baddest stingy flying insect so with a large replica of a hornets nest there , others (even other hornets) stay away.

I found this video yesterday after being chased out of the back yard. I placed 4 bags out in the play area and didn't see one wasp today. It's getting ready to storm, I don't know if that could be why or not but I am excited. Thank you!

Lester Jones it's been stormy so we haven't been out there. I did look in the playhouse where I think they were planning to nest.I put a bag in there. I didn't see any wasps.

Paper would more accurately replicate a hornets nest. Also make sure you round it off as best you can.

At first, I only had one hanging under the back of the house and wasps started to build in the front. I got rid of them and put one in the front as well and this is the third year of being free of flying, stingy, insects anywhere in our yard.

Yep, The trick is to make the bag look as close to a hornet's nest as possible. Rounding out the corners and shaping it to look like a nest. At least that's what has worked for our house. One in front and one in back. Last year was the first year we were stingy insect free and so far none this year either.

Yes, just a small to mid sized paper bag stuffed with newspaper and shaped to look like a hornet's nest. Keeps other stingy flying insects away pretty well.

I cant deal with this anymore I have paper wasps all over my deck eating my wood freeloading and I have searched hours for a nest cant find it but I know there is one my deck is covered I am to afraid to even be outside this is getting old I hate wasps they are Satans little minions I am terryfied of them
Please report back and let us know how it works for those Satan minions! I have noticed more and more in my backyard...they are so annoying when I am gardening or watering plants. I have even noticed they will chase the honey bees away...I HATE that! I want the honey bees, but NOT the blasted wasps!
Will the wasps go inside the bag or make them fly away?
No place is good for a wasp nest, but I found the worst location of all. I am afraid to unwind my hose that is kept in a box like product neatly holding the hose until needed. At about this time of year when I use the hose, out flys a squadron of wasp all pissed off. Who wants to open that hiding place and spray them? If this paper bag decoy stops them from nesting in my hose caddy, it will be well worth it. Well worth the 10 seconds it takes to make the decoy and another 10 seconds it takes to install it.
Do your best to make sure the nest looks like a hornets nest and not just a lunch bag. Take a little more time to shape it, tucking the corners in and rounding it as best as possible. I had to eradicate the wasps first but with the decoy there they don't come back and has worked for 3 years now.
I put one in the kids playhouse that they were starting a nest in and they went away.

This is the 5th season I've had these up and they still work for our place. You first must eradicate nests that are there and this prevents them from returning.

Why can't bees just go extinct?
Ha ha! We really need them for most plants to pollinate. I just don't want them living in, on, or near my house.

Why can't wasps, and carpenter bees be extinct is more like it.
But we need all of the honey bees we can get because they do most of the pollinating, also, bumblebees are very good pollinators as well, you need pollination for stuff to grow, and if stuff doesn't grow you wouldn't either because you'd be dead.
Just imagine, 90 percent of the animals on the bottom of the food chain is herbivores, if plants didn't grow, they wouldn't have any food, so without food they die out, this also affect the other animals that are a little high on the food chain, because since their food was taken away they now have nothing the eat because they are mostly much less powerful than the other thing above it on the food chain, so without food they die, keeps going on and on and on, so you get the point, it would be very bad.
Don't get me wrong, bees aren't they only thing that pollinate, even wind pollinates, but not nearly as much as all of the bees do, they take care of about +90% of the pollination combined, other things pollinate including 4% wind, 2% some birds like humming birds, and of coarse 4%butterflies, but they only take about.
