i do not believe playing with a rosewood or maple finger board can give you a 'jazz' or any other definitive sound. Its all down to the pickups, amp & hands. Musicians are so neardy about sound, its ridiculous really. Everyone hears differently. Fender started using rosewood as Leo did not like the look of worn maple fingerboards in mid '50s. You play very good . Cheers.
I agree with you, a persons tone comes from the pickups, and the way a person plays
imho, the sound of electric guitar boils down to these factors. pickups, strings (gauge and type), nut, saddle ( brass vs alum/steel, etc), fingers/playing style and amps/effects.
to me, anything else anyone describes is white noise. again, to me.
Another great video! The rosewood fingerboard is definitely best for a good jazz sound. Your single note lines have more definition without losing the jazz smoothness. It's the one that I would use for jazz. Thank you sooo much!

A few others have noted the lack of relicing there which I agree is definitely odd! No idea why, but all of the early relics have the same lack of relcing there

Really good video Jamie with good insights on how to get the various well known tones from a Telecaster. I have a soft spot for a nice bound Tele btw . I own a Tele plus 97 version 2 sunburst that also has nice binding. (maple neck)

I have a Seymour Duncan Strat Scoop neck pickup, and a Jerry Donahue Duncan tele bridge pickup. I disconnected the tone control from the neck pickup, which makes the middle position extremely versatile. I play strats and teles, and this might be the best sounding guitar yet.

I thought one needed a specific guitar for jazz, but have found in my own journey that a jazz tone is really about the individual guitar and the player! Like my ash body tele with steel compensated Callaham saddles and an African Blackwood fretboard which is harder than maple should in theory not be a good jazz guitar but I think you would agree sounds ace 😎
I have always had a soft spot for your road worn guitar. Having tried yours out and the newer version, I much prefer the older issues.
I think amps can also make a huge difference, like your musicman amp that’s now sitting in my living room, nothing sounds bad through that 😂
You have all the ingredients for a great jazz tone! I agree about the amp and player and was surprised how the Polytone sounded against the Cube on Friday.
My Spin on tonewoods. If you are playing without plugging in, sure there are sublte differences. Mahogany vs ash or rosewood vs maple as examples. But IMO. As soon as you plug in, you can get most sounds with amps and pedals and wood type is nonsense. Just my spin. Play Loud 🇦🇺🦘

Great video. I think it is great that your playing for chickin' pickin' tone was extremely creative and I loved it. True, it was not all that much towards the intended type of picking, but the output was spot-on dynamic, creative and free flowing. Great video and great playing!

Hi Jamie - could you please elaborate on the pickups and pots you use? Also, do they make a sizeable difference to the stock pickups in your opinion? I.e. are they worth the outlay? Thanks for your time m
Seymour Duncan’s in the blonde. Alnico pro ii in the neck and a broadcaster in the bridge. Both have CTS pots - 250k I think. It honestly depends what pickups you have in and if you are happy with them and what kind of sound you want.

Great video and fantastic tones and play. I think the rosewood tones are more appealing, for my own "taste", but I also liked the clarity of the Maple. Both seem to have their own voices and strengths.
I was surprised at different they sound!
Nice job Jamie, maybe a video on the picking technique and chords you are using in the above video would be helpful too. Definitely do more video's on tones with the Tele. Nice job!

Question: How do you like the 7.5" radius of the Road Worn Tele for Jazz? Would a neck swap to a 9.5", or 12" be better (-in your opinion)?
I'm thinking of beginning to study Jazz and I'm looking at different Telecasters, and even considering one with a Humbucker in the neck, or if single coil, swapping for Lollar Vintage pickups.

Very kind of you, thanks! Doesn’t make a difference to me. The new fenders and custom shops tend to be 9.5 and feel great too but I can still do big bends on my vintage spec necks.

I was told by expert luthiers that the fretboard wood has no affect on tone. The most important things are electronics, pickup height, gain, using the side of a thicker pick and the amp. You should play the neck you are most comfortable on. I own 4 Tele's and they are all setup with different electronics. 2 are Nashville Tele's.

@@lsmith869 You might get a little more sustain with various bridge and nut hardware but I was never big on sustain anyway.
Thandk for the video. I have a question. Ive owned nothing but smaller fret guitar's like the Japanese Squier. What is the hype with larger frets? I myself like the feel of touching the fretboard and not going out of tune when i push too hard. Can you tell me why you like them? Thanks!
I don’t really have a preference as long as they’re level and not too worn. I do feel that bending is easier on them on a guitar with the vintage radius.
Which amp do you use for jazz with your telecaster?
It’s just GarageBand here, but anything really! Polytones and Roland are what I currently own but I’ve had all sorts.
Great telecaster tones for blues were achieved by Robben Ford and Roy Buchanan (it's so awesome, especially the neck tone on Soul Dressing)

Do you ha video showing your GarageBand settings? Would really appreciate you pointing me to one, or if you could do a tutorial on this topic. I have an Artist Guitar Thinline, which I love playing, would love to see how it would sound with different GarageBand settings. Thanks. 👍
Thanks for the suggestion! I might do a video on this but it wouldn't get released for a few months, so in short: I tend to start with brit and clean or cool jazz combo, but need to mess around with the settings on Amp Designer quite a bit to get a half decant sound. I have heard much better amp emulators and software, but the amp sims work just fine to be honest - although this is from the same person that uses a cheap Roland cube for all my tones too!
@@jamieholroydguitar Thanks for your reply. I’ll have a play with Brit, and Cool Jazz. I’m not one for expensive gear, being a beginner. I prefer to squeeze as much juice out of what I can afford. I like GarageBand because of its simplicity, and I can focus on learning and practicing guitar rather than muck around with complicated recording tech.
I have also started using GuitarPro 8 to type in segments that I want to practice. Have you done a video on GuitarPro or similar software?
@@OtRatsaphong That's a great idea! I haven't done but I am sure there is plenty of helpful videos. I use MuseScore and I will be recording a video on how I practise using it very soon which could easily be applied to Guitar Pro.

Yes tried a very nice tele with a humbucker and it was a great sound!
That was a very fine video and I'm a very big Telecaster fan. But in my opinion there is one very important sound missing: The funk sound! (middle position would be the "classic" choice.)

I didnt think there would be a difference, but to my ears the rosewood sounded better. Could havre been the pickups however. Nice chord melody as well.

Tone all comes down to how much you can crape the finish and make it look experienced.

They both have maple necks; one simply has a rosewood fretboard. That aside, the only "difference" in tone between a maple fretboard and a rosewood one is psychological.
Naw rw is darker sounding more muddy and maple is bright and cleaner
Maple or rosewood does absolutely nothing for tone. Jim Lill has already disproven this and many other guitar myths completely on his channel. Pickups and strings are the only thing that matters - the rest is completely redundant.
