  • You can hear, purchase, and download sheet music for this and other Amidon choral arrangements at:
    www.amidonmusic.... This is also available in the Amidons collection (book and companion sampler CD) "Fifty-five Anthems for the Small Church Choir" amidonmusic.com... .
    The Amidons (Mary Alice, Peter, Sam and Stefan) learned the Bahamas spiritual"Bid You Goodnight" from the Watersons, a singing family from Yorkshire England. The Watersons learned it from the Pindar family of the Bahamas. Peter Amidon transcribed this arrangement from the singing of the Amidon family. This is wonderful song for a funeral. Slowed and softened, it is a fitting song for the bedside hospice sing.
    The singers are, from left to right: Cora Neilsen Kelly, Mary Alice Amidon, Zara Bode (Stefan's wife), Suzannah Park, Emily Miller (soloist), Jeff Fellinger, Gideon Crevoshay, Stefan Amidon (Peter & Mary Alice's younger son) Avery Book and Peter Amidon.
    lyrics (these are the lyrics the Amidons usually sing - Emily has a slightly different version on this TH-cam)
    Lay down my dear brother (sister)
    Lay down and take your rest
    Won't you lay your head down
    On your savior's breast
    I love you, oh but
    Jesus loves you the best,
    And I bid you goodnight,
    Goodnight, goodnight.
    A for the Ark the wonderful boat
    Goodnight, goodnight....
    She's ridden over land getting water to float
    Goodnight, goodnight...
    '
    B for the beast the ending of the world
    Eat all the children that would not be good
    Remember right well, remember right well.
    Good lord I go walking in the valley of the shadow of death
    Goodness and mercy shall follow me
    Bread and stones shall comfort me.

    That is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. We sang this while spreading my little brother’s ashes. He died at 41. I’m crying listening to this rendition. Absolutely beautiful.

    Thank you for this amazing song. I've known it for years, but this is the best I've ever heard it done! I first heard it by Grateful Dead, and by the Incredible String Band. Both heartfelt versions, and well sung....however, you have taken the song to greater heights. It might seem strange to start the day singing "goodnight" but that's what I've done for the last few days, thanks to you all.

    This isn't strictly a Bahamian spiritual. It's origins lie here: th-cam.com/video/t-I2m-ZCZvI/w-d-xo.html. The lyrics, though modified as it made its way from Britain to the Caribbean, originate in a British hymnist writing in 1871.

    • @ChrisHutchison
      @ChrisHutchison 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, written by Sarah Doudney, born 10 minutes from where I was born, on the occasion of the death of a friend in 1871. The recording musically closest to the original is probably that by Waterson:Carthy. th-cam.com/video/u2uM0I0xPjQ/w-d-xo.html

      Their sets were always sprinkled with traditional songs, whether it be folk, gospel, or in this case a Bahamian spiritual.

    • @moragmacgregor6792

      I *totally **_disagree_* -- my first thought is "No race, genre, or ethnicity has an exclusive claim to soul or singing from the heart."
      I knew Aaron's rendition first and maybe I'll always prefer it. I love the Neville Brothers and New Orleans music to distraction.
      But I grew up listening to bluegrass and mountain music distilled from Celtic settlers. If you don't believe they have as much soul as any culture on Planet Earth...what can I say? It's truly your loss.

    • @dlparker
      @dlparker 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Love this version. First heard the Dead do it at Soldier's and Sailor's War Memorial in Kansas City, KS, Feb 5 1969. Aaron's version on his "Warm Your Heart" album and the Soweto Gospel Choir's version on their "Blessed" album are beautiful as well.

      @@moragmacgregor6792 We could start our own thread on the Nevilles, The Meters, Allen Toussaint... And bluegrass, cajun... The Dead introduced me to it. Led me down quite a wonderful path.
