I saw this movie on Sunday. It was the best 1 1/2 hours I have invested in my mental health in years. It was healing and I walked away wanting to be a better person.

I felt exactly the same.
My act of helping my daughter as a very young child to write a letter to Mr. Rogers on her birthday turned into a yearly pen pal birthday letter exchange to not only my daughter but to me as well. As you might guess my knee jerk pessimistic reaction to those first letters was how nice to have Mr. Rogers’ administrative assistant send us one of their letters. If anyone reads one of his letters though, it quickly hits you that only he could have actually written these letters. His letters displayed the compassion and insight he displayed on his show. My daughter & I exchanged these yearly birthday letters with Mr. Rogers right up to his death. We will always remember our genuine dear friend.

I was born in 1972, so I loved his show. He was a constant for me. You gave your daughter, and yourself, an amazing gift. And I can only imagine those letters brought him comfort, that he was doing the right thing. I imagine the letters are private, but I admit to being curious about them. I can only imagine love and kindness in his letters.

When I was in grad school, under a great deal of stress, sometimes I would come home and turn on Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. Somehow, even thought he was on tV and no doubt prerecorded years before, he knew just what to say to make my day better and make me know that I would get through it. At times, it was uncanny. One time it was stormy and I was soaked to the bone from making a long trek to the campus parking lot. Mr. Rogers said, “It’s a beautiful day.” And i said, “Well, not today, Fred.” And he said, “Some days are good on the outside and somedays are good on the inside.” I said, “Good point....Are you actually listening to me, Fred?”
Mary Ann C I was still preschool age when Mr Rogers’ Neighborhood made its national debut, and watched regularly until I “outgrew” him for “more mature” fare such as Giligan’s Island reruns 😆
About 8 years later, I was at that awkward tween age and had just moved to a new home and school district. I had always been a bit of the odd duck, and was never a member of “the popular” crowd.
I too, would come home from a stressful day at school and found comfort in watching that afternoon’s broadcast (though I now see those were hiatus years) of MRN. He was so sincere when he spoke directly to the camera and said “I love you just the way you are” 🥰

I also discovered Mr Rogers when I was in grad school (I was an international student). During the hard times, I just watched the clips of his interviews or him talking and instantly cried. Whenever he said I like you just the way you are, I bursted into tears, good tears. Needless to say, he has something to do with me being able to overcome those tough times.
@@colinhyou Absolutely! There are clips on TH-cam that get me teared up every time- testifying before congress, Emmy acceptance speech, even appearing on Johnny Carson. I’m glad I’m not the only one!
One thing about Mr. Rogers that I never noticed until I was an adult was, he was talking to me and he introduced his neighbors to me. Not to all his friends watching the show but just me. He always spoke to the camera in the singular. Like I was the only kid watching, I was the only kid with him.
Tom is that person who, despite all of his fame and talent, can still manage to talk to you like he's your next door neighbor. Gotta love this man. 🙂♥️

When Mister Rogers was on PBS, I was a self-involved high school teen. One afternoon, I turned in KHET and found Fred Rogers contending with a
dead Guppy on the bottom of an aquarium. Rather than scoop it up roughly and toss it into the toilet and flush it away, he gently retrieved the
fish and checked to see if it really was dead by putting it into a light salt water bath. Satisfied that it was "swiming in heaven," he took the
defunct fish outside and gave it the kind of a burial reserved for a cherished pet, like a dog or cat. That is what made Mr. Rogers a "top of
the world" TV host and a friend to children...of any age.

I keep fish; well tended, and well loved, those little guys can live, for years.... My betta (Red Chief) swims directly, to me, loves music, plays with my hand, and we interact----on a daily basis... Mr. Roger's sensitivity to Life's smallest details, and knowing their impact, on a child's sensibilities, is (not simply rare), but a practically unknown gift..... The World is too busy, and much too noisy..... May God hold this darling man, in the hollow of His hand.......🌹

I think Tom Hanks expresses it well-we CAN have conversations like this. We need to lead into it, with sincerity, genuine interest in understanding the other person, noticing the good in them.

It’s one of the best things that we can do. You have every right to bring those good conversations into your daily life and I personally hope that they continue to make their way to you. Why? Great interview but Tom is wrong on only one thing. I think Mr. Rogers is for all of us. Especially Adults. We as adults even more than children, need to watch Mr. Rogers with our kids and take the lessons he is trying to pass onto them and apply them to us, because don't think for a minute that we all can't use what he is trying to convey in his lessons and apply it to our lives.

Ashamed to say now, but I felt the same as Hanks did about the show. Even tho I’m a slow-paced southerner, watching Mr. Rogers was agonizingly slow torture for me... until one day I noticed my 3-yr-old niece, whose parents were in the mist of an ugly divorce, hanging onto every word he said. She was the most quite, yet the most standup child. If she saw someone mistreating someone, be it a cartoon, a doll or another person, she’d calmly intervene.
Many adults loved him and cried heavy tears at his death. My son and I loved his slowness, he hated he faster paced shows. Mr Rogers respected that he could understand something longer than 1 minute.
This man cannot make a bad movie. What a great person and actor.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and watched Mr Rogers every day. I then hung around for Sesame Street afterwards, but considered it a secondary show to Mr Rogers. As a kid, I thought the switching of the shoes was the coolest thing ever. Too bad I didn’t know I could’ve convinced my parents to drive me 20 minutes down to the studio to see him in person. I had no concept of locations.

This interview is splendid. I wish people could actually sit down and talk like this more. All we do is argue back and forth these days it seems. Actually talking, and hearing what the other has to say is nice.

People nowadays are always in a hurry. Looking at their phones instead of actually speaking to another human being. We all need to talk but to listen more. God gave us 2 ears and only 1 mouth.
I have avoided watching this movie since I heard it was going to happen because I felt Fred Rogers was not to be touched by Hollywood. I've relaxed on that and after seeing this interview I'm ready to watch it. Before not even Tom Hanks was worthy but he did the work and the research and I'm sure I'm going to love it. I sure did love growing up loving Mr. Rogers! As an adult I cried and watched his last episode and cried again the day he died. What a beautiful man!

About 31 years ago Tom was in a movie called The Burbs. If memory serves, there's a scene early on where Tom's character is in some sort of early morning haze sipping orange juice and quietly singing the Mr. Rogers theme to himself. Serendipity.

I seemed to recall that scene from The Burbs as well, came out way back when I was 8 or so but still is a great movie all these year later. Pretty hilarious movie actually. This is a wonderful two way street interview. The way Tom asks Savannah questions is great to watch as well. May Tom be a part of our lives for another quarter century or more.
Mister Rogers was a great individual when I was a child; I remember that I couldn't wait each day for his program to come on TV!
I think Mr Rogers is for everyone, EVEN (especially) adults. I mean after all, isn't there a child inside all of us? I love how when I watch Mr Roger's shows I get to feel the joy of being childlike and remember the importance of being a light in a world of darkness.

I live in Latrobe, Pa (Mr. Roger's hometown), and its very surreal to realize the magnitude of the popularity of this local pop culture icon. I never met him, but he was an amazing man!
Mr Rogers was more Christ like than any famous Televangelist on TV . Mr Rogers was a genuine and beautiful human being who was so selfless , compassionate and an Example of Jesus Christ . He actually visited the sick in hospitals and didn’t showboat

I’m glad he wasn’t preachy, rather he explained why it’s important to be kind and empathetic which religion doesn’t have ownership of.
As a young Marine I'd pick up my son from daycare after work and we'd go home, sit on the couch and watch Mr. Rogers. Often there was another Marine buddy that would follow me home rather than go to the barracks. There we were. Two Marines with a less than two year old boy between us, watching Mr. Rogers.

That prayer thing - that's what my grandparents did every night. They prayed for their large family - each by name, all their friends and neighbors and anyone else who came into their circle.

I thought so too, she mentioned it twice and he didn’t want to be rude but he’s got to keep his boundaries. I was really rooting for him to say yes to being friends.
Mister Rogers’ lessons mean more to me as an adult than they ever did as a kid. He was my hero though! That half hour each day was a place of safety.
As someone who works in the early childhood education field, I think of Mr. Rogers as my personal hero. I always try to think of what he would say to someone in a certain situation before I say anything. I am also a practicing Catholic, and I personally cannot WAIT to meet him in Heaven.
I was a first gen Mr. Rogers kid, and the thing I carry with me today is that he had a calming effect on me, and I always felt like he would always tell you the truth.

I can't remember which interview it was about Mr Rogers but I think it was an interview with Mrs Rogers. I think she said that her husband Mr Rogers watched Forrest Gump. He loved it so much he watched it many times.

I remember watching Mr. Rogers when my daughter was sitting in her little chair to listen to what Mr. Rogers and his Neighborhood was on and I can see she really paid attention and I actually cried through some of the talks he had with the audience which he made one think about certain subjects. It was wonderful to say, "It's you I like" I loved that song very much because it makes sense to listen to the words.

He did such a magnificent job of portraying Mr Rogers. It is so clear Mr Tom Hanks literally gets the deepest complexity or rather the simple kindness of Mr Rogers. What a wonderful casting choice.
It's awesome and interesting to see someone of Tom's caliber meet his match and be humbled by the enormity of trying to fill the shoes of someone of Fred's character.

I just watched this movie yesterday, so heartfelt. Had tears in my eyes so much of the movie, and honestly couldn't tell you why. Even just watching this interview makes me a little teary.

Someone who doesn't even remotely understand kindness and respect. In this world it is good to remember the greatness and importance of Fred Rogers and George Washington. I watched mr.Rogers as a child,and I don’t remember much,but as a parent I saw him a different way,it’s a tool for all parents and kids,it shows parents that it’s good to talk to kids on their level,we all can be a little blue,or angry or happy,and it’s ok to talk abt things,he also teaches everyone that each person is beautiful,I find it hard to believe that some one could be so nice,toms performance was incredible,I rank this movie next to Gump,excellent work,and the movie for those that viewed it ,I’m sure has opened their eyes,to be kind,
Mr. Rogers also never tried to use his show to sell children things. He said that it betrayed their trust. What a wise, wise man. Remember too when he first became popular men were not in caregiver roles. What a beautiful example. I grew up with Mr. Rogers and I cannot explain what he still means to me. He evoked such a warm feeling inside me of love. When I view his videos he still does. I hope he knew what a difference he made.
Tome Hanks is wonderful. I think he's the Jimmy Stewart of our day. Big compliment from me. Also he reminds me of one of my brothers.

Mister Rogers represented a simple message. You are allowed to be human. Try to be kind. Simple as that.
I think he was really saying that you're allowed to act _mortal_ while you're still _mortal,_ since it sounds like you're saying that he's talking about trying to be kind while we still have imperfections at the moment, which is different from just being human.

I said what I wanted to say in that regard, and in the way that I wanted to say it. You're using the term "mortal." Mortal as opposed to what alternative? Immortal? Not sure I understand your intended meaning here. However, from a purely linguistic position, I would argue that the commonly used English phrase is "I'm only human." Not "I'm only mortal." Take care.

Saw the film yesterday as we Brits are in mourning for our Queen. Never knew anything about Mr. Rogers. Thank you for the uplift, my cousins across the pond.
Frederick Rogers was a cool man with a willingness and inspirational mind for humanity everyday every men and women and children every male and female for all ages younger older even infants born without himself here now Tom hanks did a phenomenal work performance as the late Frederick Rogers and we’ll all miss himself forevermore forever unconditionally with love and respect to this man life thanks Tom Hanks and the legendary late Frederick Rogers thanks and happy holidays to you all always peaceful peace and blessings to you all peace out.

Wow he’s so humble and down to earth
Tom's interview was great but he is from the older generation. Those of us that grew up with Fred and are now 25, 30, maybe even as old as 40, we get it. Its not meant for adults (now) but we grew with up with him, and we can apply those messages to our kids and community. Mr. Rogers lives on through the new show "Daniel's tiger neighborhood" and I now watch that with my 3 kids. This man made the world a better place and with his help we all can too.

Same here. I saw it back in 2019, and I remember walking out of the theater and crying. The movie brought back so many memories of when I would watch Mister Rogers Neighborhood every morning before school. I told many people that this was probably the best movie I have ever seen.

I love Fred Rogers. He was a gift to life, living, and emotional health. I love Tom Hanks. His acting, his person, his life. Hands down to Savannah Guthrie!!!!! She killed this interview!!! Not only, did she have actual questions with honest responses to what was said, she was involved, invested, and truly intrigued in what Tom had to say about the great Mr. Rogers. She had her own perspective, but rather than let that interfere with her responsibility, let that feed the curiosity, reverence, and respect that makes a good interview. Well done, Savannah Guthrie!
