Sometimes taking a break is absolutely fine and at some point necessary if u dont want to hate it. If this is not working quitting is definitely the best choice. I took a break for the last last year bc of the Tier 0 Format and I thought this was it for me and yugioh but as suddenly my melodious petdeck randomly got Support and accidently became insanely strong, I was hooked again and it's peak fun like back in 2019's toss format imo.
I think the key is finding out what u want from the game and how you define your own fun with it and if thats not the case anymore, no one's gonna blame anyone when you quit because of not having fun with ygo anymore.

having played for a long time i get why the obsession with 40 was so big. consistency among engines and decks in the past was so much lower. we also had a lot of one ofs because of the banlist we wanted to be able to see and the game actually depending on what you see at the top of your deck.
i feel like it wasn’t until something like zoo format and true draco, especially with the existence of cards like grass and pot of desires being in the format, we got the opportunity to play a lot more. zoo could just summon any guy and get its plays going, or just opening barrage which just straight up combos into itself, the true draco demise strategy which had a lot of draw engines to get through the deck fast, and then of course infernoid which was usually taking advantage of the fact that people played 40 cards in the deck, letting them mill 20 on the first turn with grass, or even taking advantage of reasoning and the fact that many infernoid monsters cannot be normal summon/set.
and then of course the brilliant fusion engine, where the idea of a garnet comes from in the first place. this was when i had to strongly consider playing more than 40 for the first time without it just being a question of not knowing what to cut. I don’t wanna draw Garnet ever.
Not to mention all of the cards that added cards or sent them, cards like Oviraptor too which came out that same year, and of course the greatest creation of 2017, ash blossom.
i feel like after this point, even after hits and all that, the game changed to a point where 40 cards meant nothing. the ratio of starters to extenders to engine requirements to non engine is everything now.

in that sense it feels like a positive evolution. like you said for a long time we were fighting for enough good cards, cohesive engines, and ways to reach them; we've now reached enough of a critical mass where Triple Upstart and Chicken Game doesn't even matter for the most part. it's a blessing amongst curses. as players we're a bit masochistic for choosing to continue spending our time and money on this hobby; sometimes its nice to look back thru our history and see these silver linings.

Me playing heroes and looking for any way to not draw mali led me to often play more than 40 since there are so many hero search cards that count as a hero if you open them, but make it less likely to see the mali.

Because Fusion Duplication allows you to forcefully resolve Branded Fusion by using it during yours and your opponents turn you can run fewer engines and play more non-engine because you know a Branded Fusion will probably resolve when you need it. If you combine this with Fusion Deployment, Branded in Red, Cartesia, Quem, Aluber, and Branded Opening it is possible to run 15 non-engine inside a 40 card Branded deck. You can play a Patchwork engine and still have 9 non-engine slots and still play a 40 card version or you can take it to 45 cards like some people have in the past and play more non-engine. Some of the hand traps we have in the game can serve as light and dark targets that allow you to play more non-engine without hindering Brandeds' grind game or you can run board breakers like Lava Golem and Forbidden Droplets that give you a equal or better success rate with fewer cards than if you ran enough hand traps to consistently open 2 with the intention of stopping your opponent from playing the game.

i think the "don't know what to cut" argument is actually not that bad as a practical thing. Like imagine you have 2 options to cut and you can go from 42 to 41. sometimes if the option is not obvious, it's possible that cutting the wrong card can be very detrimental. like if ur choosing between cutting a certain non engine card or maybe a searchable tech piece that's sometimes great sometimes not ideal (something similar to snake eyes subversion), and you cut the wrong card going into an event for whatever reason, you lose more from making the wrong decision than you might have gained from making the right decision. and if you have no clue what the right decision is and you're just picking blind, that could be like 50% chance to go -4% winrate to a 50% chance to go +2% winrate.
in that case it's recognizing your own limit in knowledge and making a good decision based on what you think you're capable of.

40 cards in older formats is just so important. The power discrepency was HUGE. Think of goat: playing anywhere above 40 is MADNESS cuz it means you won't be able to see your Pot of Greed, Charity, Breaker, Mirror Force, Snatch Steal, BLS, etc, etc. The busted cardpool is quited limited. There isnt anywhere near 40 cards of similar value. It is very very easy to discriminate and choose cards that are better than the others. The same applies to a format like Edison. Think of Gorz, Dustshoot, Judgment, Torrential, DAD, etc. I mean all of this honestly just goes with Konami's horrible habits in terms of early banlists when for some reason they just left a buch of sacky one-ofs. And it's crazy to me that some Edison players still find reasons to play 41 when Dustshoot, Gorz, and DAD are literally tide-turning cards.

Dark World was very interesting for me when it came to deck building rules. I saw it best played as a 40 card engine, and stuck firmly to that rule while I was playing it. This meant cutting hand trap staples like Maxx "C" in Master Duel, and reserving board breakers and certain turn ending hand traps like Droll & Lock Bird for the side board in the TCG. In hindsight, I saw others have more success with the deck while including a few hand traps in the main, but I think that's less about my theory being wrong and more about Dark World being an outdated deck that requires multiple Dark World cards to be strung together for a combo, unlike other tier 1 or 0 decks that can compress that power into one singular card (see: Mathmech Circular, Tearlaments Scheiren or Kashtira Unicorn). Tearlaments was a far better example of a 40 card engine and how breaking deck building rules (to an extent) could lead to better success with a deck.

15:30 You didn't do chat justice, the important part was facing the chatter in Blue Eyes mirror matches.
While this is obviously a joke, some rogue decks have such text walls of convoluted effects and even anti synergies i bet even a really capable pro player would struggle to keep up with (because unless it's a bet or something they would drop the deck after a single locals).
For example Josh tried Infernoble live on steam for the first time and he got pissed (at himself) for massive misplays (warrior lock, improper sequencing) while having 2k backseaters.
I'm willing to bet if you liked HERO and picked it up for an event the jokes about Nib Token board would end the very next day, because the deck has a lot of gas + good end board but it makes the player incredibly greedy, and this in addition to casual/semi competitive players being the bulk of its playerbase gives it an even worse name (Sam if you read this, make it happen)

I play a lot of different decks at a high level and there are definitely a lot of decks flying under the radar. Spright is a little behind but they naturally have a lot of what makes decks unfair. They have access to multiple negates, non-targeting removal, and they have a tight and powerful resource loop with multiple 2 card combos and 2 1 card combos with the nimble package. If they got a Garunix Eternity like card and 1 more consistency card they would already be back in tier 1 or higher. People are calling Spright rogue. But I don't think it ever stopped being a tier 1 deck and maybe some innovations have to be made. But if you can figure out how to make Accesscode you already fix a good portion of Sprights problems when in conjunction with the removal Spright has already and Masquerena, S:P Little Knight, and Gigantic being able to swing with 3,200 attack. Even if you don't win right away if you can wipe your opponents board and setup a field where nothing your opponent does during their next turn matters then next turn you get to finish them off and win. There are so many underrated decks and old deck that are so blessed like Branded and Spright that when people say they are rogue you think those people are smoking crack. Decks like Branded for example have such a large card pool that its hard to grasp how infinitely powerful and consistent it can be. Built properly 1 Cartesia gets you almost more than what Branded fusion does by making Dusk Dragon and sending Titaniklad to grave. You really can't underestimate it now that Fusion Duplication allows you to forcefully resolve Branded Fusion by using it during your turn and your opponents turn.

I’m a Dragon Link enjoyer and good at playing the deck and have played the many variations of the deck over the years but one thing that has always perplexed me is that the decks deck building is super complex and I have never been able to create proper ratios of handtrap/board breakers because the deck in my opinion does not want to play 40 because there are a lot of search-ables you don’t want to see. Chaos decks seem to be the same. Probably a reason I like the deck so much because there’s a lot of experimentation that can go into it and it performs
