    I watch this video every time I need to access my engine bay! It's a pretty simple process, but I always have difficulty re-connecting the engine cover once I'm done and putting everything back together

    That was very beneficial and much appreciated. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this.

    Thanks for two things. 1. You made the only video that I found that has the instructions to put the top into the full service position - that is, to put the roof cover completely vertical. Not even the articles with text and photos shows how to do this. 2. The video isn't totally handheld so I didn't get a headache watching you. A big KUDOS to you!

    Thanks for making a simple and easy to understand video of how I can get to my 2000 986 Boxster's engine..well done.

    I would caution people to be careful of belt-buckle damage to the fender paint. Very nice step by step demo.

    Great vid! I am doing research on how to work on these cars and the more I do... the more I want one. I just have to come up with enough cash to get a decent one now - prices are still really high here in Australia.

    NOTE: If you've upgraded to a glass window top, the "service position" is a toughy.

    I have no idea why they could get away with charging $250 for an oil change. When I first got my 911 I took it to the local Porsche dealer and was amazed at the larceny. I do know that they charge a fortune for the 0W 40 and they allow a long long time for the oil to drain out . I wouldn't be surprised if they consider that shop time. I've never gone back to them and always find alternate ways to change the oil now. I live on Long Island which is near Manhattan where there is a lot of money. Maybe the Porsche dealers just take advantage of that.

    • @BurnersCars
      @BurnersCars  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed! I know it varies by dealer, but it definitely seems like many dealers just assume you won't question the cost because it's a Porsche! I've saved so much money doing the work myself!

  • @ericwsmith7722

    Having a early Boxster my currant problem is the parking break light switch, because as you may know you can not operate the top unless the parking break is on, And since the switch isn't telling the warning light to go on..... its also telling the top its not on. meaning you can not accesses the top of the engine compartment ! While Germans make some dam nice stuff,, they do tend to overly complicate it.

    I've owned a 911, a Boxster S, and a Cayman S and have paid as much as $250 for an oil change. I afraid to think about what they would charge to replace an air filter on a Boxster since the prep is so involved. It really pays to learn how to do these things yourself!

    good video. How many standard maintenance items are you able to do yourself? Oil & Filter? Air Cleaner? brakes? etc
    I'm considering buying a used Boxster and have never owned a mid engine car. Are there standard maintenance items that are too difficult to perform and require a trip to Porsche dealer or pro mechanic?
    Thanks.

    • @BurnersCars
      @BurnersCars  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JG This is my first mid-engine car, too. (I love it, btw) The maintenance is a little more difficult, but really it's only slightly less convenient. If you can do these maintenance items on a typical car, you should be able to do them on a Boxster. I've been able to do all the items you listed. This video really covers why it's a little more challenging. You can't just pop the hood. However, once you get the engine cover off, everything is pretty familiar.

      +Porsche 986 Thanks for the feedback. I have a lot of homework to do before getting into serious looking mode. I'm going to the local Porsche Club of America auto cross to speak with owners and learn what I can. Thanks again

      Did you get one?
      You can do tons of stuff yourself, but you need the right tools for the jobs. Get a torx set, trim removal set, and socket wrench set. When you do, take the car to a shop you trust, not a dealership. Dealerships are going to quote you 2-3 times what it should cost (like $500 dollar oil changes, which is complete bullshit. It's about $200 at a good place (or less DIY) and only done once every 15,000 miles). Don't be surprised at $150 an hour mechanics, though. If you didn't get one yet, make sure to do all the research you can. You don't want to end up with an IMS issue, or convertible top issue. Those are really expensive.
      Long story short, totally worth it.

    My top doesn't work right now; is there any way to do it without putting the top in the maintenance position ?

    • @BurnersCars
      @BurnersCars  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the ball caps are your problem, the top should move freely by hand. If, however, the top doesn't move, and you don't hear anything when you press the button, then it's more likely one of the micro switches that sense the position of the top.

    • @ericwsmith7722
      @ericwsmith7722 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does your parking break light work when the parking break is applied ? If not that's why the top wont work. You may need a new switch for the PB light.
