  • This is a walk around tour of our off-grid set up, with a couple clips of the journey along the way. The past four months have had a lot of blood, sweat and tears (I don't think this video does it justice) but this place really does feel like a home. We cannot wait to progress our homestead in 2023. If you would like to join us on our journey, please like and subscribe. Thanks!

    Cover the WHOLE veggie garden in chicken wire (or fencing preference) babe. No matter how high you make a fence. You won't stop climbers, jumpers or flyers getting in. Think tennis court covered over top with mesh...

    Hi, it’s so exciting to see your journey. I’ve just bought 100 acres in Beverley Western Australia and looking forward to getting started. I haven’t got the keys as yet really chaffing at the bit for settlement! My place is classed as a weekender because it’s got a great big shed on it decked out to live in, but the Shire won’t let you live there permanently they want you to build a house. I’ve been watching Off Grid with Doug and Stacy, and have learnt so much. They’re in America of course and they do fantastic things with compost toilet. It would benefit you to have a look at that. They’ve been living off Grid for 14 years apparently! I look forward to seeing your progression on your journey. Wishing you all the best

    Ive been living off grid on and off for around 40 years. Much easier now. Congrats its just the best lifestyle for kids. They gain so much . We moved to the waterfront after pressure from family as it was close to school. I HATED IT, so back to the bush. I was born country and thats where im happiest. Advice if you dont have any medical training is brush up on basics , so you dont panic and have a good general knowledge. A medical kit on hand that covers lots of yhings is a must. Country kids seem to do the craziest things but made us tough. Your compost pit is really important to get your veggies a good start. Get a grey water hose for your run off water from your washing machine . This area will be great to plant pumpkins. Once you get eggs, veggies and fruit going you can barter excess or bottle. So many options. It takes time but you will get there. So happy for you.

    BTW growing wattle around vegetables is natures in build water "bank" because of the root systems. Not to mention the reciprocal relationship with how they condition the soil. I would never remove wattle, just thin out. Just a thought. Get to know your Aussie natives because the companion plant opportunities are rewarding. Best of luck 🤞❤

    Snakes around house site can be helped by lifting ALL stuff off the ground, ie no tin laying on ground, stacks of timber, also no weeds or shrubs that cover dirt. Keep it that way, so all dirt areas can be seen at all times, the snakes love cover. It may be a good idea to teach kids to never pick up things that could hide a snake, and smaller ones can hide under things like frisbees. So moving them with a stick may be a way to help..
    Also keep an eye on dog, perfect size for snake bites anywhere on body. It is a bad thing for dogs with black snakes as anti venene for them is required as soon as possible and is not as good as the one for brown snakes, (ask me how I know!!)

      snakes are an issue for sure. my family member was bitten by an Eastern Brown, in suburbia, on a low mown lawn. They can show up just about anywhere. he was ok by the way. it was a large snake as evidenced by the distance between fang wounds, and he did receive venom. not all bites deliver venom, guess he was just unlucky.

    Hi guys great video !! Its awesome seeing the progress with your possum problem Quassia wood chips or bark is used as a natural insecticide for getting rid of head lice, flies, ants, aphids, mosquitoes in your fish ponds without killing your fish. any leaf eating insects such as caterpillars, pumpkin beetles, red spider mites and the like. It is also great to repel possums. We have also had a lot of issues with the possums devouring our veggies!!
    To repel possums in the garden for ornamental plants you can spray on the leaves, stems and trunk of the plants, you can also do this on fruit trees avoiding any soft skinned fruit that is ready to be picked.If you are protecting your edible herbs and vegetables from being the eaten it is best to spray to saturate the ground around the plants, if the quassia is sprayed on the foliage of your herbs and vegetables they will not only taste bitter to the possums but also to you!
    However it does work best when sprayed on the leaves that they like to eat, so leave a week before eating your herbs and vegetables Apply quassia spray for 5 days in a row. This should be long enough for the possum to realise that this is not the tasty treat that he thought it was. Re apply the quassia spray after rain or watering. If the possum comes back for more repeat the spray for another 5 days.
    Quassia Spray.
    Use 200g of quassia chips to a 9-10 litre bucket of water let them soak for 24 hours before straining off the bitter liquid. This can then be sprayed on the affected area.Adding 5g of pure soap flakes per litre of spray is an effective wetting agent for the
    above spray.
    Don't spray it on food crops less than a week before you consume it.

    Awesome to see an Aussie family on my recommended vlogs carving out an off grid life in Australia, you guys are doing a fantastic job.... as a nurse we can focus on the subject of shit and my suggestion with the black tank try and introduce some bugs in there, you'll find the contents will turn to, non smelling liquid in months if not weeks, the closed system will only make it fester in there .... just an idea ...... and also you have 84K views on this video with subscriptions at 2.02K maybe start asking people to subscribe if they're going to watch anyway, just a thought, good luck you guys I hope it all works out for your gorgeous family 🙂

    I was excited to see an Australian bush off grid video, unfortunately the american style on/off narration is very disappointing for me, brief captions eg: what was happening with the water tanks would work better. I wish you and your family all the very best, although it won't be easy, it will be worth it.

    What is your property zoned as? In NSW RU1 & RU2 under 100Ha does not qualify for a dwelling entitlement and there are restrictions to how many days a year you can "camp" on the property.
    Is this a case of "ask for forgiveness rather than ask for permission situation"?

    That looks great. However I was wondering how you are doing that regarding approval. I have the impression that's much easier where you are. Not sure if it's the shire or the state that make it easier. I am in WA and I have big problems at the moment. But this is all Australian standards. How do you get the energy efficency done with all of that?

    Hi, you will need a dog to keep the possums out or enclose the entire garden from ground to roof

      We've got dogs but they don't seem to do much to deter the possum... or quoll by the looks of it 😔 I came back from Brisbane and the veggie patch has been decimated, so I'm eager to get the wire mesh walls and roof finished ASAP 🤞

      Thank you! Yes, I was doing a lot for instagram and after I make a youtube a friend made the same recommendation. I've tried to film a lot horizontally lately, for upcoming videos, or doing two videos in each layout. I appreciate the input, part of me was like "will people actually mind!?", and so I will endeavour to make videos landscape moving forward. Thank you!

    Hey guys
    What power source do you use , we are just about to get a cabin on an acreage on the south coast an just looking at solar options as we will be off grid too .

    • @outlawcustombows
      @outlawcustombows  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate,
      We run standard PV solar panels on the roof, 6 in total currently but aiming to add more in the future. All of our batteries, solar charge controller and inverter are Powertec brand which is a lower end brand but came with the tiny house we purchased.
      Our friends at Custom Lithium (see them on FB) would be able to set you up with a much better system catered to what you need.
      We currently have 600Ah of battery storage which works well here in summer with longer daylight hra but does struggle some in rainy spells and in winter. Id suggest minimum of 1000Ah of storage for a family with normal appliance usage.

      @@outlawcustombows thank you so much for the info , sounds great , something very similar to yours I think we work , we are on a tight budget and are trying to do away with the main creature comforts an just use the power on the main appliances we need for every day , ie fridge an yhe better half works from home so computer an all that jazz, anyway , bloody legends, appreciate the feed back ☺️

    Newbie here . We are living in a Caravan ATM and looking to purchace some land and live off grid... question .. do shipping container clasify as transportable as I've been reserching and we can't build anything and live in it unless it's a certain class. But a transportable is ok to live in. Like on wheels I think. Gosh hope you can understand what I'm saying. 😂

    Hello there, how efficient is the solar system, do you depend solely on solar? We don't know which way to go, either solar or grid....we are a bit apprehensive about how solar system will work. We don't have grid connection. Cheers

    • @outlawcustombows
      @outlawcustombows  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Solar works well for use but we do supplement time to time with a generator when we are using very power hungry appliances like the washing machine.
      The bigger the system and battery storage you have the more you will be able to run or the longer you will be able to go without sunshine.

      I'm so sorry to hear!! Our neighbours place burnt down and there are some stories around here. I remember watching the news and thinking people were mad for staying and defending their property... we haven't been here like but I get it! The blood, sweat, tears, the energy, the memories. I think I'll,be hard pressed to peel from this place. We are definitely preparing for when, not if, they return. Devasting stuff. I've subscribed and will check out your video. I hope you're back on your feet soon!!
