Mr. Henderson is right when it comes to family and people we thought we were close to. I had worked abroad as a teacher for seven years and came back to the US four years ago to be near my family. I had brought with me my wife and daughters who are from the Philippines. It has been a struggle these past four years as I realized that I had the same relationship with my parents and brother when I lived near to them as I did when I lived on the other side of the world. We saw each other rarely, and they could not provide any emotional or actionable (taking care of the kids, etc.) support. We would just talk every couple of weeks. We can talk on the phone. I don't need to be near them. Well, I have decided to move to SE Asia. We will have better support from my wife's family. Plus we'll actually be able to save money and provide a better future for our daughters.

For those thinking of Florida, I just had my hurricane damaged roof replaced two weeks ago. The hurricane happened last September. I may be finished all repairs by this September. I love it here, but it isn’t cheap and there are plenty of dangers. A guy taking a leak behind a bar because the bathroom was full just lost his arm to an alligator in my town last week. A friend of a friend was bitten by a rattlesnake while taking photos of flowers in a state park. She almost died. This happened last month. Food and clothes and other items are more expensive. Insurance is more expensive: car, homeowners. If you don’t own your house outright, you need to make great money because rent is high. Wages are lower than other states and benefits frequently aren’t offered. If you are thinking of moving to SW Florida for the sunny beaches, so is everyone else in the country. Building has skyrocketed the past three years. Most of the beaches are small, with small parking lots that fill up by 9am.

The advantage of moving to a state without income tax like TX or FL is that if you move out of the US permanently, you will not have any state income taxes due. So not a bad idea to live in one of the income tax free states long enough to establish residency prior to a move outside the US.

Left the Northeast nearly 20 years ago, New Jersey to be specific. There were many reasons we left but costs were the number one reason. I went to a state that offered 20% of the property tax cost, 25% lower cost of living, half the cost for a house, the lowest utility cost in the nation, cheaper insurance costs and lower food costs. Our careers would have paid maybe 5-10% more if we stayed in New Jersey but we could easily live a far better life in a different state.
In 2010 when we built our house, our builder was at that time building in 25 or so states, the same house we built in our state ($425k) was over a $900k build in New Jersey with a 20k a year estimated property tax, I pay almost 4k a year in our current state.

There's really not much reason imo to stay in a high expense area other than for a high paying job. Plenty of cheap places in the world that are fun.

Oddly enough, many wealthy citizens of Latin American countries are at present making great effort to immigrate to the USA, particularly from Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America (Brazil and Chile primarily). Families of means are arriving daily in Miami and the trend shows no sign of slowing. Yet, despite this, many American citizens seem more and more drawn to the idea of emigrating to Latin America, probably for a myriad number of reasons but cost of living and perceptions of freedom seems to be chief amongst them at the moment. Perhaps capital is simply moving across the globe due to a general sense of instability or economic malaise? Puzzling situation, I’m not quite sure what to make of it.

I'd agree that there's potentially more in common between some living in parts of the US with those in other countries than there is between some parts of the US, though from what I've seen/experienced I'd say many of the differences are more likely to be urban vs rural than it is purely different geographic regions -- except when it comes to how "hot" and "cold" weather are defined.
E.g. if a person grew up on a farm, it's very likely they'd have shared experiences with others (around the world) who have also grown up on farms than they would with people who grew up in major/mega urban environments where they've (potentially) never even seen a cow in person.

what the folks that move to Texas don't understand (most of them) is that YES you pay less for a house but what they don't take into account is that you Pay MORE in Property Taxes on the value of your home. So Yes the homes in CA are more but the taxes are less. A 800k dollar home in Tx cost you on avg 20K+ a year in Taxes (without Exemptions), and it just keeps going up because they keep raising the value of your home every year. There are so many WELL established neighborhoods in TX, for some reason their value keeps climbing EVERY yr by $35-50K. It's ridiculous. You see in Texas ONLY property Owners Pay Independent School district Taxes known as ISD taxes. So what happens is: City property Taxes get added to County Property Taxes which in turn are added to ISD taxes, in the end you're paying between 2.40% - 2.62% + on the value of your home in Taxes EVERY year. So when you're house is COMPLETELY paid off and you live, in a 500K home, you'll still be paying close to 15K in taxes a yr. Oh and don't be late.

@Will Swift search for Anna von Reitz. Unfortunately YT will censor my comment if I include any links. She has two websites, one is the spelling of her name and the other is state assemblies. That is her pen name. Her legal name is Anna Reizinger. Abraham Lincoln suspended the lawful governance of the U.S. with his illegal Leiber Code martial law. The lawful governance was never reassembled and instead the globalists replaced our government with a Scottish corporation United States Inc. This subsequently transitioned to a papal legal fiction. The Old World aristocracy enslaved the U.S. with the Civil War. It was never about slavery but about States rights. In any case, the Constitution was a delegation of powers to the Federal government which was actually just a contractor hired by the States. The Americans have been entirely duped and turned into corporate vassals. You must correct your status to a State National, then for example income taxes no longer apply. Everything that has happened since the Civil War has been illegal. All those Constitutional amendments are invalid.

If you are only saving a few bucks here and there is it really worth moving to Texas or Florida for example if you are indoors all of the time because of the oppressive heat? You have to have money to live a good life in Florida, Texas you still need a good amount of money but not so much. It's also a culture that takes some time getting used to, some would never adjust. I'm talking open carry of guns, religion, and in your face racism. They casually throw the N word into everyday conversations to the point where I've had to say "Just because I'm white doesn't automatically mean I'm a racist!". If you are retired why would anyone move to either place? I moved to Mexico and the weather, people and food are more than enough for me to be happy and content and my health care is not something I'll ever have to worry about. I really like not feeling a need to pack a gun just to go outside for a walk. It's a family oriented culture, where people aren't wrapped up in politics and children still laugh and play in the streets. Whole families go out in the late afternoons to the city plazas for socializing, tacos, music and dancing into the night. "Wait up for Gramma to get ready!"

@@SMoore-vj7bt Its not about rural vs city. The point is that the geography, weather, food, architecture, demographics, familiar sayings, accents, behaviors and the way in which people interact/cultural norms are different. The culture is just different. Even with slight variations by region, the Midwest is the Midwest.

    • @SMoore-vj7bt

@@RitaLady indeed. Thanks for the elaboration. I was curious if there was a particular facet of the culture that was the most difficult for you to adjust to. I agree that it can be difficult to adjust to foreign places. In theory the U.S. is a melting pot and we all speak English, but the reality is more disparate. The bimodal racial demographics intersect in different locations of each, e.g. Houston and Chicago - excepting Hispanics. However the definition of the MidWest varies and even the MidWest varies a whole heck of a lot between big city and rural. Some 10% of respondents include WY, CO and MT. An even greater percent include the Dakotas. Those States have a more wild west culture than the smaller easterly grouping definition of MidWest. That’s why I asked where exactly in the “MidWest”. It’s not as simple as you ostensibly thought it was. I can accept the general thesis of a wide average difference accumulated over many facets of the two regions. Note you originally mentioned only culture, not geography and climate. I think climate (not weather) is the correct term you want there. Thanks for the sh8test if it was.

@8:53, “is there a TGIF in Paraguay?” Yes, but not necessarily by the same brand. Satellite communication, internet, air travel, and global brands have homogenized the experience of people living many major cities. For example, you can order your favorite beer, McDonald BigMac, Pizza Hut, Netflix’s movies, and other familiar stuff whether you’re living in NYC, London, Paris, Berlin, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, or Tokyo. The only difference is the tax.

Both states will have high insurance costs associated with homes because of natural disasters. Florida in a way has to be a low tax state because it has high home insurance rates due to hurricane threats and sink holes. Texas is similar but with a diversity of different threats with tornadoes, hail storms, hurricanes, and floods. The climate of both makes them suitable for agriculture and agriculture is important for human population. Humid subtropical climates supports the most developed civilization. I don't know about overseas, but from another state, my son did it as a hairstylist; however, he was already established, an award winner, an influencer with paid product partnerships, ,educating other pros in hair shows, doing hair for model photoshoots and appearing on the news for the salon or a hair show. He moved to NYC from small town PA. It was hard at first. He lived in an Airbnb for two months, with roommates for three months until he finally got approved for a one bedroom. Now he's doing alright in NYC. I will emphasize again, though, that he was already established as a hairstylist when he moved.

Wise beyond your years! I love it when I listen to Americans that no longer wear rose-coloured glasses! I've lived all over, and am totally amazed at the blind loyalty people have, as well as pre-conceived notions and beliefs that have been drilled into their very ignorant heads. America is not (and will probably never be again) the America that people choose to believe it is, as it was decades ago. And Americans (as a general rule, in 2022) are not the honest, honourable, hard-working, caring, giving people they once were. Crime is at everyone's doors, whether they choose to see it or not. The government really did turn into "Big Brother", and don't give a rat's ass about one single person. They have their own agenda, and taking everyone's money is number one on that list. If I didn't have 4 close relatives pushing 90 right now (and care-giver to one), I would've been long gone years ago. Trust me... when they're gone, so am I. And if a semi-intelligent person uses language as an excuse to not move somewhere... well, let's just say that's a typical, narcissistic American thing to say! Open your eyes, and your brains, and you might just learn something. Other than what you're expected to think as an American! Even Americans who hate America, and are non-patriotic, are stuck in stupid! Blinders are permanently affixed in the delivery room, and very few ever figure out how to remove them!

So many restrictions and rules, and no rights (on paper anyway) to even defend your life. I want off the ride, but no idea where to go. I just want some land and peace for my fam and animals. Having friends and family present in one's life is critical too. The system has done a great job to teach otherwise, but survival chances are better when not alone.
