  • Greg Kroah-Hartman needs no introduction. He is the maintainer of the stable branch of the Linux kernel and a fellow of the Linux Foundation. In this episode of Let’s Talk (an un-interview talk show), we debated a wide range of topics primarily the state of security in Linux. We also touched upon what the kernel community and the Linux Foundation is doing to attract more developers (it seems like unlike the rest of the industry, the kernel community continues to get new developers). We also talked about how companies like Microsoft and Amazon are becoming good citizens and contributing to the kernel. One topic that PC users will like to listen to was - does the desktop matter anymore. He also disclosed what operating system he and his family uses. He talked about his disagreement with Richard M Stallman and why is he growing his beard. It’s a fun and informative interview, I hope you will enjoy it.

A programmer since 1968, I also moved to Linux actually in 1998 I think, on the desktop at home. It was in a way more fun when you actually had to make, at times, things work. Nice that guys like Greg Kroah-Hartman exist.

Greg KH is definitely the right man for the job. I have to admit my favorite line of the interview, so far, was "The Fellowship of the Kernel". What a movie that would be! :) Okay, back to the interview...

Google essentially destroyed the possibility of Linux smartphones/tablets/etc by making Android. Corporations have many possibilities to phuck up things. Microsoft has destroyed so many companies, and while Linux is not a company, they have other ways to handle it. They sure as hell are not promoting desktop Linux, or want Linux becoming a gaming platform etc. but what is their actual plan, I don't know. Killing with million paper cuts, slow hijacking of the community with covert means or something else. One thing is fact, they are only in it for money, and corporations don't care if millions of people suffer if that is the long term profitable solution.
With carrot or stick, with covert means, infiltration etc. there are tons of methods to use when you have constant flow of billions and billions and no conscience. People are way too naive when it comes to corporations.

For kernel developers it's all just a terminal/text editor with maybe some highlighting. His primary interface is: mutt and scripts for common actions.

@17:11 No no, FOSS is boss. You cannot destroy the boss. Even if Microsoft bought out Canonical. You could fork it, mirror the repo, find new maintainers and call it OpenSpagettiSauce Linux. Another fork would be Spaghettini Linux without installer and with some smug individuals who would petronize the "filthy" newbs. ;)

As for myself?....I have a Dell XPS with an i5, and it DOES seem a little bit slower?....but I'm not a content creator, nor am I a gamer....(well I game on my PS4 and my XBox One X....not into computer gaming) the only things I use my laptop for?...is staying connected to the office through e-mail, and learning how to code in C++ and Python, and streaming radio through Clementine...not exactly speed-dependent tasks. I guess eventually they will find out and fix whatever needs fixin' but I'm good either way!!

Why Arch? I moved away from Gentoo awhile ago. Why did I choose Arch? :) It would be interesting to know which DE/WM he uses. i3? dwm? But it doesn't matter --- we all do distro hopping and we all base it on some reason when we do.

Cause it "just werks"TM. Literally: "yay -Syuu" every day and reboot once in a while if there are any kernel/module updates. And that's the whole maintenance process :)
