I was a student of Lennie Tristano's, and can very much relate to Lee's language. Like music, language has very sensitive words and phrases, and Lee beautifully expresses a sort of culture with which I'm familiar, having studied with Lennie and then Connie Crothers for another ten years after Lennie passed. And she was true to his teaching, as am I, when I do teach (which is rare... anyone know a horn player looking to study?) Lee was a phenomenal musician, and I'm so glad to have learned many of his solos, which are in my brain forever, and to be a sort of musical cousin...

Max Roach considered Tristano and his students to be part of the "downtown" school, while Charlie Parker, Dizzy, Monk and himself were part of the "uptown" school. So basically he identified two "schools" of the bebop style. I would agree with this characterization.

Love Konitz! I'm sure the rest of the video is very insightful. What a great player.

Very interesting. I didn't know Warne Marsh played the piano. So what period would you classify Lennie Tristano as ?
