This is so cool to hear. A different sense of the man after years of listening to his recordings and working on playing his lines. Its like sneaking into one of his lessons. Thanks for posting this gem.

This is priceless. What he plays at 4:23--my god! It's astounding. I've listened countless times. The humor in it! And to think like that on the spot! He plays it as an example of "bull shit" free jazz, but he's so gifted, he's unable to actually play "bull shit." And the skills involved in playing that fantastic line!

I feel the same. Can't stop listening to that incredible line. I'm inspired to try to transcribe that line!

@@u47tube I think he's trying to tell you it was bullshit. And it was.

Surprising to hear Lennie Tristano talking about painting, but I do love those multi track recordings he made.

This amazing interview was actually filmed in its entirety.
But the people who made the film didn't appreciate the value of what they had - and the film, except for a tiny segment, has been lost.
    Thankfully, the audio survived somehow.

Thanks for posting this. Such a great mind! The interview got cut short. Do you have the rest?

Why was this cut off at the end?

Just goes to show: a gifted, creative genius just CAN'T play bull shit even when he tries.

What Tristano said about record companies sitting on tracks for years, then releasing them; that's
Note's claim to fame. Other labels do it, of course, but when it comes to Jazz they were most notable for it.
