    How can i improve the design to lights up all the leds at 12.6V?

    The best way to detect the Battery Voltage is with the LM3914. If you use this chip correctly, you can adjust the Range of the displayed Voltage. So you can set the Range from 0 to 12V but also from 6 to 12V, or 10 to 12V and so on.
    But if you want a measuring Device with the smallest own Power-consumption you better use a Moving coil measuring device for the right Voltage with the proper precision Resistor for measuring range adjustment.

    To all those people who apparently do not understand voltage, when a battery is dead, it has 0V as voltage is the measure of the electromotive force. In other words, if there is no charge, there is no voltage. So, yes, a battery CAN reach 0V.

    • @joeybanana839
      @joeybanana839 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But when a 12V battery becomes dead, it has about 10,5 volts. Get you some of that

    • @protoborg

    Very good. How to use for 12 / 24V batteries with 5 leds? Thank you

  • @Danixu86
    @Danixu86 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    - The first example is nice to see how it works, but very bad as a battery metter, because a battery at 10v is dead and with 10v that metter have 4 lights on. Maybe changing the values of the resistances or/and adding another one at the input will work as expected.
    - The 2nd has a good starting, but needs about 15v to lights up all the leds, and a battery has a max voltage of about 13v. Only has 14.4v as much while is charging. Same as above, but this time maybe the problem are the zener values.
    For me, the best you can do is the third, because uses 10v as minimal voltage, and the max voltage can be regulated to lights up the green lights when is full charged (about 13v), and the white led while is charging for example (above 13v).

    • @protoborg
      @protoborg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, the battery would NOT be dead at 10V. A dead battery has NO VOLTAGE hence the term "dead". Also, the battery puts out 14.4V not when charging, but when it is being used to start the car. Thus, it does NOT have a maximum voltage of 13V.

    • @RDCST
      @RDCST 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@protoborg At 10V is not dead but is worthless, you can not start the car with that voltage.
      Also, unless the battery is deep discharge resistant with 10V is dying slowly.
      Probably you will charge it again but the amount of energy that can store will be less and it get worse with every deep discharge.
      Why did you say that the battery puts 14.4V at start?
      As far I know it will have lower voltage no higher.

    • @protoborg
      @protoborg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RDCST No it is NOT worthless. The car WILL start as it is not the charge that matters. It is the current flow that matters. Batteries have two different voltage readings. A car battery outputs AT 12V, but it doesn't STORE 12V the entire time. Thus a battery that HAS 10V is NOT useless. Further, modern batteries don't have any such thing as "deep discharge" as they are typically deep cycle batteries for safety and longevity. Deep discharge is not that bad. It doesn't actually start to suffer on the first deep discharge.
      A car battery is rated at NOMINALLY 12V, but they generally run a bit above that.

    It should be called a Voltage indicator - not battery indicator. A 12V lead akku is empty when it reaches below 11.8V. To achieve this the first diode must be a Zener-Diode of 11V (or nearby). Multiple diodes also could be used, since each is 'loosing' around 0.7V.

    • @protoborg
      @protoborg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How exactly would you get a voltage reading off a dead battery? Think before you speak. A dead battery will give a reading of 0V.

    • @robertweekley5926
      @robertweekley5926 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@protoborg - You are referring to "Zero Volts" as "Dead", but if you read Lead Acid Battery Spec Sheets, you'll see the "Discharge Cut-off Voltage, is "10.5 Volts!"
      Also, many Vehicle Circuits, require a Specific Minimum Voltage, ABOVE that "Cycle Test Cut-off Voltage, of 10.5V!
      So, for systems operational requirements, saying 11.8V is equal to "Dead" may well be a reality, "In the System ", even though the batter still has Potential Energy in it! Just not enough to operate various systems or circuit elements!

    Hi, The zener diode method results in surprisingly hi resolution for its simplicity. In theory I would consider 12.6V & up green for a rested lead acid car battery . While charging, green up to 13.8v, and then changing back to yellow up to 14.v, then amber at 14.6v, then red at 15v, for example. But that is my theory. might not be practical. You have done a great job I think.

    • @robertweekley5926

    Lm3914 is the best because it can be calibrated for whatever voltage you desire.
    Secondly the bar/dot feature expands the confines of your design in the sense that you could light up the LEDs at higher voltages exclusively from the others
