- Here's great rock 'n' roll song from the pens of Leiber and Stoller. This is title song of one of Elvis's best films ...my favourite anyway. So that I could look more like a jailbird in this video I decided not to shave for several days ...not laziness at all, honest.

@@funguy4utube I don't find it hard to be honest. I always have my foot tapping out the beat when I'm playing guitar, and that helps with getting those taps right I think.

I just ordered 50 from the 50s..I have an electric guitar as well as ukuleles. I struggle with the guitar because of a neuropathy ( mainly affects my legs but also weakens my hands; especially the little fingers..hard to hold a pick, which is why I get on much better with a uke!)

No problem. Its on its way to you. Yes, most rock 'n' roll, rockabilly and blues songs are based around a three chord structure. In the key of A (as in this example), that would be A, D and E (or E7). In the key of E that would be E, A and B (or B7). They're called the i, iv and v chords, as they correspond to the first, fourth and fifth notes in any given key. So in the key of C (where the scale is C D E F G A B ) the chords are C, F and G (or G7). I hope that makes sense. In the UK we call this the 'three chord trick'.

Rock 'n' Roll Songbook

I followed your song book but you do something different in the chorus and solo...any tips?
Hi Leon. I just checked back at my video, and apart from one chord during the solo (where I play an A6 instead of a plain A) I am playing the chords I set out in the songbook. There's a distinction between playing basic open chords and playing different chord versions, inversions and techniques used in rock 'n' roll to spice up those chords a little. It would take a lengthy tutorial to explain these fully, but I'll have a go at explaining what I'm doing in this video:
When I play the D chord in the chorus I drop my little finger down onto the 4th fret of the 3rd string on beats 2 and 4 (taking it off in between those beats). Adding a 6th note to the chord like this is common in rock 'n' roll and blues riffs, such those heard in lots of Chuck Berry recordings. I do something similar when playing the A chord and the E chord. For the A chord I damp the 6th string with my thumb and place my index finger across the 3rd and 4th strings (I don't play the 1st and 2nd strings -- they get damped by my index finger). I then add that 6th note my dropping my ring finger down onto the 4th fret of the 4th string on beats 2 and 4. When playing the E chord I do pretty much the same thing, but shifted across the finger board. I place my index finger across the 4th and 5th strings (I don't play the the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings). I then add that 6th note my dropping my ring finger down onto the 4th fret of the 5th string on beats 2 and 4. I play a common walk up lick as I move from the verses into the choruses. Have a look at my fingers in the video and you'll see all of this in action. I use these techniques a lot in my acoustic rock 'n' roll covers. I hope that helps a little - Jez

@@RocknRollSongbook yeah you got a point there with the train thing I never thought about that. Maybe you can do a cover of Chattanooga Choo Choo and last train to clarksville. Ft Campbell is here as well. This is where Jimmi Hendrix was stationed in the army and playing guitar here and just down the road in Nashville. He bought a guitar here in clarksville that he returned to the store for some reason. Some say he was behind in payments. Anyway apparently the guitar is still somewhere waiting to be found. I'm just playing A, D and E most of the time, sliding up to the A from Ab during the verses. The chords are little jazzier during the solo (D9 and E9).
