The 70's and 80's say "meh" to this supposed Gloriously Graphic & Delightfully Dirty Movies list...
I think he's got more attributes than just "gore" on the list. He's also trying to introduce things you might've missed. Everybody knows about RoboCop already.
still a shitty list. I could think of more than 10 movies just from the top of my head: - The House That Jack Built (2018) - Nymphomaniac (2013) - Wetlands (2013) - The Sadness (2021) - Street Trash (1987) - Ebola Syndrome (1996) - Riki-Oh (1991) - R100 (2013) - Border (2018) - Feed (2005) - Kuso (2017) - Pieles (2017) - Masking Threshold (2021) - Meatball Machine (2005) - Tokyo Gore Police (2008) - Hentai Kamen (2013)
LOL I remember watching "Wicked City" on a VHS, bootlegged from a laser-disk, that we bought at a comic book store, when I was in collage in Pittsburgh, back in "89.
@@DarrenVanDam I'd actually argue that several of DePalma's early films were heavily inspired by Hitchcock. Body Double for sure, but also Sisters, Obsession, Blow Out and Dressed to Kill, to name a few. In fact, having followed his career from an early stage, he came across as a bit of a Hitchcock hack/clone early on. He got better at it over time but he really came across as desperately chasing a Hitchcock-esque notoriety early on...arguably a bit too aggressively. Anyway, love your channel and recommendations!
Thanks for mentioning "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead", I haven't watched it for a while so I rewatched it last night. It's very well-written with good performances, and wow! what a great performance from Albert Finney. "Running Scared" looks good too, I wouldn't mind watching it some time.
It's an absolute must to add "The Substance" (released in 2024) to this list, sci-fi take on the mental insanity that is present in the modeling industry, exaggerated through the roof to prove its point. It's Grindhouse gritty, it's unapologetically squeamish on an intensity level that surpasses Requiem for a Dream, and the ending goes straight-up Tromafilm insane with the gore and revulsion, but with a hefty-enough budget. It WILL test your ability to watch every scene without something being in there that makes you want to partially block the screen with your hand or one closed eye while you mutter "Oh my god!" It's definitely not a feel-good flick! And Dennis Quaid is way too good in the role he's got in it. That character was made for his look. Demi Moore has not lost her acting ability either, wow.
Paul Walkers performance in Running Scared is the key to the whole movie, although the supporting cast is also excellent. He portrays a guy who must keep his nerve and his cool at all times bc his life depends on it, which creates a great amount of tension on-screen.
Running scared is an awesome movie. Wicked city is an all time favorite anime movie for me. I’m a child of the 80’s and classic anime from that time is just incredible. I like your ichi the killer pun. It’s a movie with an edge. I see what you did there
What a mild, mild list! It's funny that you keep saying - "This one isn't really graphic and doesn't have much sex - but it is weird". But it does function as an ad for Tubi, I guess.
Just saw Girl on the Third Floor. Great flick. Nice gore. Nice super close shots. Lots of ooze! Thanks for the tip. I will work my way down the list of ones I have not seen.
Running Scared, is one of my most recommended movies, it pains me how little recognition it got but at the same time, I think that makes it even more special, it's also hold up incredibly well, it hasn't aged at all.
I liked the Beach Bum when it first came out; maybe I’ll rewatch it & catch things I missed! I remember liking Running Scared when it came out on video at Blockbuster! There was that creepy part too; it was sorta eerie, as a whole. Thanks, D.!!!♥️🎬
When 12 Angry Men is your first directed movie and 50 years later Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is your last, if somewhere between those you did Serpico and Prince Of The City and The Deadly Affair and The Wizz, hell even if you ever only did The Hill and Power, you shame 99.9% of everything being created today. Rest in more than well deserved peace Sidney Lumet.
I have been a huge fan of Sidney Lumet since I first saw "12 Angry Men" as a kid in 1968 as a 7-year-old boy and he is basically the reason I began to explore the drama genre. It was right after I watched this movie that I watched "To Kill a Mockingbird", and my journey of the genre was set in stone.
You started talking about the graphic anime, and I KNEW you were talking about Wicked City. One of the craziest ballsiest wildest animes I’ve seen, still reigns supreme today, great pick man!
One of my favorite mystery movies is Shattered (1991)with Tom Berenger and Bob Hoskins. Directed by Wolfgang Peterson. Not the best but I thought the twist was unexpected.
Closer is great recommendation. It is a movie that has multiple perspectives as to what is happening, and all perspectives are equally compatible with each other.
Thanks for another great list. I watched Running Scared in the theater when it first came out, and it quickly became my favorite Paul Walker movie. Other than that, I watched Ichi the Killer when you could still rent it from Blockbuster and really enjoyed that one as well. All the others, I have not seen. I think Wicked City intrigues me the most, but I will now watch some of these. Thanks!
Hi, I love your channel, and please don't take this the wrong way. Please consult a Thesaurus when you do your scripts. I didn't count, but the words incredible and wild popped up a lot. Keep em' coming Sir.
Gene Siskel died in 1999, so he never got the chance to review Running Scared. And Sydney Lumet pronounced his name loo-met. I too initially thought it was loo-may, but it’s not.
Good suggestions, would've never considered Closer till you mentioned it...used to have a crush on Natalie Portman so I might watch it and the anime one too.
Looking at my collection of the movies I downloaded "for keeps", I have to say that the VAST majority of them are because of...you...Yeah, no kidding, you have given me some of the best selections of how to spend my time watching something good. And I cannot think of anything nicer to say to anyone when it comes to entertainment - well, other than, of course, John Stewart and Steven Colbert, I mean, come on, no one is that good! 🤣 So, thank you and keep it up!
Good morning. I'm new to your channel. I like looking for new movies to check out. Extreme movies get my attention. Right away. This is a nice list. Thank you.
A good start. Don't be afraid of the '70s. People should check out the Lone Wolf and Cub movies of the '70s. Some of the kills in the Streetfighter (Sonny Chiba) series are still gory and outrageous. Also Ninja Wars. For comedies -- check out Bachelor Party, an early Tom Hanks movie, very not-PC. Also, Private Resort, an early Johnny Depp film, and another very not PC humour. For horror -- check out some of the Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento films (the original Suspiria remains the superior to the remake).
Closer feels like a stage play because it was a stage play before it was a film. If you ever get a chance to see it live with solid cast (of only 4 people), I highly recommend it!
Surprised "Maniac" starring Elijah Wood didn't make the list. "Maniac" is definitely graphic and bizarre movie. 😳 Thanks for the movie recommendations!!!
I really enjoyed the weirdness and twist in Come To Daddy - I was not expecting what happened at all which always makes me happy. Another fun list - thanks!
Wow, I rarely see a list like this where all the films pique my interest. Also, being a huge film buff that has seen some pretty obscure movies, rare that I've only seen three of them. I will check these out!
I've lost count of how many times I've watched Body Double. It's one of my go-to movies for when I want something soothing. That effect comes from the movie's treatment but mainly from its sublime music by Pino Donaggio. It's oh, so, perfect. And of course, then there's Melanie Griffith.
Wow, thank you. There are some great recommendations here. I saw "Body Double" when it first came out and if the other movies are on it's level they are going to be must watches. One movie I think might fit on this list is "Wild Tales". A pitch black comedy by Argentine director Damian Szifron. It is a series of six tales of revenge and retribution. They all start out kind of slowly, but quickly build to craziness. At the same time, despite the wildness, the movie is shot in a low key manner that belies the crazy actions that take place.
Body Double is a hidden gem & a movie I enjoyed & creeped me out at the same time when I watched it the 1st time. Mind you I may have been 7 years old when I snuck & watched it the 1st time at my grandmas on HBO I believe. I still replay certain scenes from that movie over again in my mind til this day & I’m in my 40’s
Thank you for this list. I will be checking these out except the one's on Tubi. I would get it but they ask to have access to your phone and I don't like that. Thank you.
I saw Body Double way back in the day when it was new. I checked it out for the sexy bits, but loved it for the plot. Another one I like is Dressed To Kill (1980), with Angie Dickinson and Michael Caine. I liken the headliner names to Scream cos Angie Dickinson, like Drew Barrymore, gets top billing but gets snuffed at the top of the film. Still, the mystery that follows is good. I would consider it on par with Body Double.
I saw Running Scared on in the intro & I was like “FUUUUUUUCK YES!!!”. That’s a movie any film lover 16 & over needs to see. Paul Walker & Vera Farmiga are brilliant in that movie!
Just watched "Come To Daddy" per your recommendation. Even though Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" song isn't in it, I did hear his other track from his Druqs album, "Avril 14th", easily the best track on that album, and placed in a good scene in the movie.
I know I'm dating myself, but I saw Body Double in the theater when it first came out. I loved it. Another great Depalma film is Dressed to Kill. Michael Caine is awesome in it.
Michael Caine was not in "Body Double". He was however in "Dressed to Kill" with Angie Dickinson. Both great De Palma movies and yes I saw them in the theaters when they came out.
Man, I watched The Beach Bum after seeing this video and it didn't disappoint. It's the most bizarrely heartwarming and bleak comedy I've seen in a while
Come to Daddy was surprisingly better than I expected it to be. Before The Devil Knows Your Dead rewards thinking and is all around amazing. The human interaction was amazing. Lumert is always amazing. Body Double watched in the early 80s was a wild experience. Hitchcock is however rarely imitated successfully as so much he did first. An animated 2009 movie Boogie (dir G. Cova) was a bit obscure but may be relevant to such a list.
Takashi Miike Is legendary director but I'd like to kindly correct you on something you said about his films. Not all of his films are brutal and bloody. In fact he's directed several kids movies including the Great Yokai war films and JoJo's bizarre adventure as well as at least one musical
Takeshi Miike might be best known for Ichi the Killer in the US, but he’s done more than violent and suspense films. He’s also done fairly ‘family-friendly’ movies like Zebraman and The Great Yokai War.
Bird People of China was directed by Miike and is not gory, but beautifully strange. The producers wanted it filmed in a remote region of China, so a seasoned director with a long-time crew was required. Check it out!
I watched Before the Devil Knows You're Dead last night on your recommendation and really thought it was very very well done/poignant. Thanks for the great recommendation. I have seen Closer several times over the years and it is also very good.
Well, when I saw the title, I was expecting things like "Feast" (2005), "The Substance" (2024), "Braindead/Dead Alive" (1992) or "Crimes of the Future" (2022). A bit dissapointed. But ... rather good movies otherwize. Some I've missed that looks interresting. Cheers.
Ichi the Killer is one of my favourites. To get even more graphic, watch the director's cut. The Wicked City anime is good. So is the live action version. I've probably watched that one more.
Takashi Miike also did a bizarre and hilarious musical that features claymation gore and zombies called "The Happiness of the Katakuris" and i highly recommend ut!

Both great De Palma movies and yes I saw them in the theaters when they came out.
thanks this list looks great - surprised I have not seen any of these
Man, I watched The Beach Bum after seeing this video and it didn't disappoint. It's the most bizarrely heartwarming and bleak comedy I've seen in a while
Harmony Korine is great.
Believe it or not, first saw wicked city, like 35ish, years ago, uncensored, on the scifi channel, on the saturday morning anime block.
I loved your video and hope to see more 👍
Running scared as an absolute gem me and the wife couldn’t stop talking about it after we watched it. It was great.
Check out earlier De Palma - Obsession with Cliff Robertson. Very Hitchcockian!
Ichi the killer was awesome! I watched it years ago and I think I should watch it again along with The Audition.
Great number one pick!
Wow! Running Scared was awesome!
Loving seeing Wicked City get some love. After Akira this is the best anime in my opinion - extremely slick and ballsy.
Bird People of China was directed by Miike and is not gory, but beautifully strange.
The producers wanted it filmed in a remote region of China, so a seasoned director with a long-time crew was required.
Check it out!
Running Scared are one of my favourite movies of all time, I love that movie.
I’ll watch all of them. Already seen Wicked City, because I’ve been an anime fan for a long time.
I watched Before the Devil Knows You're Dead last night on your recommendation and really thought it was very very well done/poignant. Thanks for the great recommendation. I have seen Closer several times over the years and it is also very good.
Running scared one of the greatest action movies of all time!
“Hobo with a Shotgun” sets the bar for graphic & dirty
Well, when I saw the title, I was expecting things like "Feast" (2005), "The Substance" (2024), "Braindead/Dead Alive" (1992) or "Crimes of the Future" (2022). A bit dissapointed.
But ... rather good movies otherwize. Some I've missed that looks interresting.
Cheers.
The best of the best is Boogie Nights with Mark Walberg and Burt Renolds.
Running Scared is one of my favorite movies
DBZ fan. The Cell saga was hard.
I remember Body Double from the early days of HBO.
Great List!!!!!
First I love your work. What do you feel about the Shield variant named the Oath correctly on Tubi?
Ichi the Killer is one of my favourites. To get even more graphic, watch the director's cut. The Wicked City anime is good. So is the live action version. I've probably watched that one more.
I hear and obey the voice of Darren.
Watched Wicked City 15 years ago and yes it is a Great Anime tops my list as well as my copy of Akira.!
Running scared is awesome
When I 1st watched I believed it would be a remake of the 80’s Billy Crystal movie
CM Punk needs to star in “The Bruce Campbell Story”
How about as a younger Ash in Enter The Deaditeverse?
A movie that needs to be watched and reviewed is Russkaya Lolita (Russian Lolita) a fantastically shocking movie. It stars Valeria Nemchenko.
Killer Joe is another great Matthew Mconahey entry! Surprisingly graphic on the first viewing!
Takashi Miike also did a bizarre and hilarious musical that features claymation gore and zombies called "The Happiness of the Katakuris" and i highly recommend ut!
Closer is actually a very good," Anti-Rom Com", a very good relationship film with a Beautiful song by Damien Rice. Good Date movie.
Is Clive Owen naked in that movie? 💋
Body Double is one of my favorite movies. Almost perfectly done.
Good stuff, all the way.
