The song came out in 2003. What is interesting about the music video, is that it predates TH-cam by 3 years, so the only way to watch it, was on The Dresden Dolls website, via Windows Media Maker, so the viewing screen was very small, and the audio quality was very tinny sounding, but I would watch it as often as my computer could handle the bitrate. Strangely enough, I first heard the song at a "play party" if you catch my drift.
The song was released in 2003. The music video pre-dates TH-cam by over 3 years, so, the only way to have watched it was, on the Dresden Dolls website, which was embedded by Windows Movie viewer. The video was tiny and the sound was crap, if it worked at all, still I watched it as long as my computer held up
Legends! Thanks for the reaction! They’ve been been an obsession of mine back in the 2000’s! I believe they are no longer together after trouble with their label but Amanda had a solo project as well. It’s interesting as well but I prefer the DD songs. I think Coin Operated Boy is standing out a bit but in general they have the same style overall, only piano and drums and then they do ballad‘y songs or faster ones (like Girl Anachronism which was already suggested here). Personally I also enjoy Dirty Business and Good Day a lot though it’s hard to choose. Also they have a live cover of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs which is really nice.
Yes, ish? The first song is "Good day," which is also a great song. "Girl Anachronism" comes after "Good Day" and before "Missed Me," which is also a great song.
Shores of California - has a great video - Or live versions/no video only of Jeep Song or Delilah. Or from her solo work The point of it all or Ampersand
I think it's kind of a clue to the song that she doesn't look all that covered-in-make-up in the vulnerable bridge section. You get a glimpse into the fact that it's not actually a coin-operated boy that she wants. And then the make-up is back when she starts to sound confident again. There are a helluva lot of Dresden Dolls tracks worth checking out, but I suggest you continue your journey with Amanda Palmer's solo track "The Killing Type". (Yep, destructive relationships once again. And quite an unforgettable video.)
I think this is a bit of anomaly in their catalog.. they are a duo consisting of a singer/piano player (Amanda) and drummer (Brian). Check out a song called Sex Changes, it's pretty intense.
I feel that in the end of the song the singer gets her coin operated boy - this fantasy - but this perfect boy is not as good as she thought. Like she doesn't feel like loved when the coin operated boy embraces her. So this perfect boy, who does everything she wishes and still somehow he is not enough. To me it feels like a divorce song. Someone telling their boyfriend that they are not happy, even though the boyfriend hasn't done anything wrong or that perhaps that is the problem even - that being too perfect makes her feel, he is not honest.
See, i always thought of it as a kind of objectofication of a romantic/smexual partner. In the begining of the video she takes his drumsticks and throws them away and then replaces them with flowers. And all the things she does to "fix" him according to her interests are all things that make up his core identity. The more she tries to assert her expectations which are "plastic" or "coin operated" meaning fake and predicated upon her gratification, the progressively unhappier he becomes while she grows more controlling and obsessive. The contstant comparison between what she is "creating" in him verses everyone else who is still themselves creates this contrast of selfhood verses loosing yourself to those who think compromise and self-sacrifice are the same thing when it comes to relationships. But thats just me. My friends used to say the same thing, that it was about smex objects like you said, but i took the whole object thing and went a totally different direction in my head. He just looks so... resigned and dead in the end. It really bothers me.

Yes..yes they are fucking incredible live. One of my favorite live experiences, and that's saying.... A lot.
Its UNTOUCHABLE! 💯😎
Same album the opener Girl Anachronism is really good

Try Girl Anachronism. I'm in love with Amanda Palmer, but specially with her performance for that song.

Interesting. We'll have to check it out. Coin Operated Boy is the only song I know from them aside from some of Amanda's stuff on Tiktok.
