This video gives me hope lol wife and I just bought our first house and neighbors pond drains into our back yard and makes 80% of the yard not usable and I’ve been thinking about how to fix it and this looks like it’s exactly what I need to do! Thanks!
Did you get the drainage fixed?
@@kennethmillar8173 we got some free corrugated pipes and we’re able to divert some of the water to make the yard more useful for a temporary fix but we decided to move back to our home town so it wasn’t worth it to us to go through all that work with us trying to plan a move and not really get to enjoy the end result, but this is exactly what the yard needed, hope the new owners find this video
@@CFCBEMLR I know this doesn’t pertain to you but the owner of the pond could be the one responsible for the water overflow depending on location and municipalities
10/10, your experience is basically identical to mine. I have 200ft of 10" two-hole French Drain & I doubt it would max out a 2" discharge. My neighbor ended up using an 8" discharge instead of my dual 6". We both max out our systems about twice a year.
I hope you installed a nice pond for your ducks, they obviously enjoyed the hell out of the pond
They were ducks that I rescued from a storm drain at work. They flew away after they became mature. Well the male Mallard stuck around, but unfortunately a fox snagged him at one point. But yeah they really did like the pond! I ended up getting them a large container to swim in
I was gonna say I wanna see a duck pond video next!

Thanks for sharing: we have some low lying areas in our lawn, but I plan to only had a mixture of sand and topsoil for our lawn - hopefully I will save our Saint Augustine grass and have a better lawn. I know what you mean by saying "We" and it is really "Me" too. I have been punching above my weight-class since I have had taken over the home and lawn maintenance.
You mentioned that you’d be doing a garage “some day.” Three years later and the garage has arrived. The grand plan is finally coming together!

This looks great man, I need the same thing over here in the New Orleans area. I'll have to watch the video a few times to be clear on what you wired in.
I had to do my yard and all I did was dug a 1 foot by 1 foot trench about 40 feet long down the edge of my yard and filled with gravel then put dirt back on top and so far it’s worked perfectly. It just holds the water until it soaks into the ground.

The storm drains get rid of water immediately. If the storm drain is too small, it just takes a little longer, but still does a very good job. Not sure the style of french drain you'd build, but unless open with exposed stone, they clog in time and work slower.
Its very interesting we don't have all those materials here in Canada so will have to improvise we have terrible flooding here so many drains are required but certainly food for thought thanks

Words of wisdom, learn from me. Never use 4" pipe. It's okay in light rain conditions. Recommend minimum 6" or larger for severe spring early summer flash floods.

Great job..smart of you using a 6in pipe..we get a lot of rain here in Texas and month old 4in drainage system couldn’t handle it..had to re dig it and replace it with 6in..seems like your system works great
Thanks Alberto. And yeah I wish I went with 6-inch on the entire system. Only the back half is 6 inch. Still works well though and has never clogged
Same here in Oklahoma. spring/early summer biblical rains overwhelm 4" pipe. Recommend 6" or larger.

Thanks for this. I have same issue and soil is mostly clay. I had professionals tell me a French drain and same result still pooled because of the clay earth. I had to run pipes under found like you which solved the problem.
French drains are a waste of time with heavy rains. Nice video sir.

Thanks for the video pal, really great explanation. I’m thinking of doing something similar but I don’t have a natural stream nearby, still your video gets me thinking of solutions for my swampy garden.
Also, you have the boat, the motorbike, the decent sized garden and a beehive too. All the things I’d love to have. Got a small hive on my roof, had to sell the boat but I still have a bike outside. All the best.
No problem man! I'm glad the video helped get the wheels turning for solutions on your garden. That's cool you have a beehive on the roof. I thought about putting mine on the roof of my chicken coop but decided against it in the end since I wanted to keep it as far away from the house as possible

I’m in a terraced house in an urban setting in NW Europe, so nothing like the rural setting you would normally associate with bees. Still, they seem to be doing well. Nothing quite like sitting up there with a drink and watching them bring in forage from somewhere in between all the bricks and mortar surrounding us.
You did great. I have seen pros on you-tube that didn't do as well as you. Outside of the 6 inch you mentioned well done...You used common sense...BYW I like the height of your fence..

FYI gypsum will help break up the clay in your backyard and lime will help fertilize your lawn to get it looking good again.

That is a very smart idea. I have more or less the same problem and thinking of doing something similar to what you have. Do you know what kind of contractor should i get. For example a landscape contractor? Sump pump ? Plumbing? I would really appreciate if someone guides to the right direction regarding that matter !!
I would suggest calling at least three different landscapers who do hardscaping and get three quotes. Can be a pricey job depending on the route they take

You are lucky you had a ravine nearby to drain to. I watch metal scrappers on the tube and they give you some idea of swampy areas with all the sump pumps they collect. Seems like Ohio has areas with sump pump situations.

You don't need fabric on the stone when u put in perforated pipe, thats the reason it takes so long for water to soak away, it eventually will stop working because fabric will silt over, I was in drainage business for nearly 35yrs, found this to be case several times, if drainage pipe is installed properly its self cleaning
That's a good point you bring up however I feel like the stones would eventually get clogged up. And if not, then as sediment continues to wash away you're going to get settling over top of the pipe. But another fact of the matter is that the clay soil in my backyard doesn't really perk at all. Or at least not quick enough during a rainstorm to get to the pipe with fabric or no fabric

Good job. I did some perforated pipe drainage alongside my driveway last year. Now I don't get a big standing puddle anymore. I also did a little concrete canal, with steel drop-in grates, that takes water from the downspouts across to the drainpipe. I managed to get a haircut here a few days before the dipshit governor closed up shops like that. I doubt I could do as good a job as you did on yours.

The first few times it down poured I ran out there like a little kid all excited to see how it was working. lol. Yeah this everything shutdown stuff stinks. I need a haircut, that's for sure but I figure I'll just let it grow out quarantine Style

A company suggested we do the storm drains. I'm concerned with them getting clogged. We have a lot of pine trees. Would you still recommend?

Really awesome video. At 7:57, is there a real benefit to use a 6-inch discharge pipe vs the 4-inch that you used just to keep up during your strongest storms? I would have assumed your 4-inch pipe would only be overwhelmed during the worst part of the strongest storm, so this seems more a "feel good" upgrade than a practical one? I suppose the cost difference would be small since it was all DIY. Very cool BTW.
Yeah the 4-inch pipe has been fine. It's only during the worst downpour that it starts to become a little bit overwhelmed. But honestly I think it's still worthwhile to do a 6in okay. I would have if I could go back

They were. Raised them from ducklings with the chickens. But then one day they decided to take off. They would come back and visit often but then stopped showing up

Haha yeah I realized that after I shot the 2nd half of video and looked back at the original clips. I let the grass go. It looked nice for a while after first planting and then the weeds took over and I gave up on it. I drive over top of it too much to worry

Hello! Whenever it rains, my background becomes an absolute mud pit. There's no standing water, but my entire yard is muddy and stays muddy for quite some time longer than my front yard. I have no idea about drainage, but what do you suggest?

Will my tree roots correct themselves if I raise my garden with woodchips, trunks and soil? I have a latge avcoade tree which is suffering from wet roots at the moment and I want to raise my complete garden. Hope that makes sense..

The problem I have here in Georgia is that the way my yard was excavated left me with places where the water can’t drain properly. My property is on a clay/rock vein. The yard isnt graded enough to allow the water to drain off to the street. So water pools where I don’t want it to. I can’t lay a proper French drain because I can’t get down in the ground low enough. So I have a shitty soggy yard. Suggestions?

Probably have to use a sump pump. With a auto float that kicks on when it gets full. Sort of like a toilet works

They are storm and sewer line PVC. They sell them at home Depot and Lowe's
What kind of catch basin did you use?
A heavy duty plastic one from home Depot

Maybe if you add a sump pump into the large drain, it will help push the water along and the 4 inch pipe will work better
Honestly it's never really had a problem. Only during a severe downpour has it started filling up. But it never went to the top. If I did anything I would add another 4-in pipe or just dig it up and replace it with a 6-in. But definitely not necessary right now. Just wish I went with a 6-in to begin with
