    If you want an actual answer to the whole uncanny valley thing, it's dead bodies. We evolved to learn not to hang around dead bodies as they're hosts to diseases, in fact in most examples of the chart for the uncanny valley a dead body is pretty high up on it

    • @RavenIsAnArtist
      @RavenIsAnArtist 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +175

      That does explain it well! Because when people die they do look like "Wax figures" when they lose their color (if you've ever lost a relative and stuck around a while, you'll know what I'm talking about). I never connected the 2. It gives an unsettling feeling.

      Always assumed it could also have something to do with the fact that other species of human used to exist. It would make sense to fear something that almost looked like you but not quite when there are other, slightly different humans that are fighting for your food and stuff.

    The theory that I subscribed to for the uncanny valley is that it's connected to our ability to identify corpses. So when we see something uncanny, our brain is getting uncomfortable because it's signaling that you're looking at a dead body

    • @OwlskiTV
      @OwlskiTV 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +50

      To my understanding uncanny valley hits cause we know what a human face should look like, as well as how a human walks/talks/moves, etc. So when we see something resembling a human face, but isn't really a natural human face, we instinctively identify it as something that's trying to pass off as human (ie. an imposter trying to pretend to be a human) and thus triggers our instincts.
      It was probably developed as apart of the survival instinct to quickly determine if something we're looking at is innately a threat or not. It's sort of why people have a fear of clowns, as the exaggerated expression of makeup (permanent smile) and their over-the-top joyfulness feels unnatural to what we know about how humans act.

    • @yourbigfatdog992
      @yourbigfatdog992 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It almost definitely is, a lot of common uncanny traits are things we see during the decomposition process, sunken eyes, drooping eyelids, and hanging jaws as well as paleness and further discoloration of the skin are some of the first changes during decomposition.

    Something Parallel seems to have forgotten to add about the Luna Park train fire is that one of the victim's family members were looking through photos from that day much later.
    They found a disturbing picture of their child standing next to a nearly naked man wearing a creepy cow/demon costume head or something. The photo was taken in front of the roller coaster that was set on fire and the supposed "demon mascot" thingy was never recognized, seeing as no such costume existed

      Yep, that's an entire rabbit hole within a rabbit hole. Not only was the weird guy never identified, but he looked like a depiction of Moloch, and 6 kids and 1 adult burned to death that day. There's a hell of a lot of evidence that the fire was caused by arson, and the police very poorly covered it up. Whether or not the cops were/are as corrupt as the evidence suggests, it still makes no sense why it was covered up, or why it even happened in the first place.

      This is simply not true. The nature of the writing is completely uniform throughout there are no noticeable signs of change in look or quality. Forensic analysis has drawn 2 conclusions this was written by one scribe and in one session. Skeptics argue this is impossible they don’t argue that the evidence suggests that this is the case they simply state the evidence isn’t true and cannot provide an explanation. Why does the scribe show no signs of aging? Disease? Change in mood? Or even an increase in his proficiency? How can someone write for 30 years without wavering in quality even once? Old comment might get buried but gonna say it anyway. The uncanny valley. Most psychologists say that the uncanny valley was a défense mechanism against humans that might be suffering from a severe disease of some kind. Perhaps it was a mental disease so the human would be acting strangely or maybe a physical disease that made the human look and act slightly different. It’s essentially our way of noticing when something is off about someone to keep our tribe safe. It wasn’t a strange human looking predator it was more making sure we could identify each other as predators and keep each other in good health. I hope that made sense. Example of diseases that influenced this are rabies, brain rotting diseases from water or hysteria or other mental disorders

      That's a theory I never heard but makes so much sense. The theory I was told was that the "predators" the uncanny valley recognizes is other species in the homo genus, like Neanderthals or Homo Erectus. Evolution is wild so it could be both or neither, who knows

It's endless.
      Guess how much money he brings in off merchandise alone every year? Not even licensing, just merch. I'll put the number at the very end, to give you a chance to think about it.
      If you're exposed to media of any kind on a regular basis, i would bet good money that it hasn't been months. I'd be pretty stunned if it's even been a week. He's just so ubiquitous that we don't even notice.
      Cuz I don't go anywhere near places where you'd expect to see Garfield. I don't watch cartoons, i don't read comics, i don't buy toys, but he is inescapable.
      He is everywhere, world wide, all the time. He's got better media penetration than freaking Jesus, and churches spend billions on promotion every year. It's distopian.

    This was really well made. Nice work! Your very first entry that you talked about is actually a "test" I do for people covering these things. This is an EXTREMELY common one to bring up, but from the way a content creator talks about it, I can gleam if they do more than just copying the first result on Google and do actual research. If the content creator just says we don't know what made the sound or say it could be a monster and just leaves it at that, it means they don't do enough research and I can't trust them for entries. But if they bring up the further research that shows it was more than likely a certain ice phenomenon, then I know I can keep watching. Very early (and the top results) never bring up these later findings, so it's a good way to determine if the content creator actually did more than the bare minimum of research. Obviously, you passed the test. I also want to commend your coverage of the School Days one as that is one I am pretty familiar with, and you nailed it.

      I think PP does pretty good research and summaries, but it is kinda funny to say he got the School Days stuff bang on. The death which took place in an apartment and had a male victim earlier in the last episode was far closer to the real life incident, which made delaying the broadcast a lot more reasonable.
      It’s a summary, so I don’t expect him to include every little bit. But a few facts that add a lot to the story is that 1) the TV station chose boat footage when yacht imagery ended up being a pretty important plot point in the last few episodes, 2) the fans translating the episodes as they came out uploaded the boat footage pretending it was the last episode as a prank, and 3) “Nice boat” was way more of a meme in Japan than in the West because they knew a lot of English-speaking fans were *not* prepared for a School Days Bad End.

    Chris Burden is an interesting piece. I dug more into him and found a lot of interesting stuff on him, featuring a piece where he kayaked to a beach in Baja Mexico and lived there for 11 days with nothing but water, and another piece where he bolted himself to a concrete floor using copper bands, next to two buckets of water that contained live 110 volt wires. Definitely a shock-value artist, no pun intended.
    An interesting bit about "Shoot", it was to get across the fact that as Americans we watch people getting shot in films and TV, but never experience it, so he decided he would be the one to feel it.

    In regards to the McKamey Manor entry, his name is Russ and a very thorough deep dive, if Yt hasn't censored the heck out of it, was done by Reckless Ben.

    From what I heard, God's Ego Death refers to the theory that in the bible, the old testament God was more ruthless (many genocides, making his followers sacrifce their first borns, etc), whereas new testament god was more was 1000 times more compassionate, and it just seemed god really mellowed out.
    The theory suggests and speculates that there was an event that caused God to have an ego death, which is what caused such a drastic change in personalty and behaviour, what this event could have been, or even if the god from the old testament is the same god in the new testament

    I love your videos so much! Slight critique, i wish there was a little bit of space in between topics. I don't think any of us mind a slightly longer video just for a little bit of breathing room in between topics. Regardless, i will still watch every upload of yours ❤

    Rhythm 0 is one of those performance art pieces that fascinates and horrifies me. I cannot imagine letting yourself be at the absolute whim of others to do whatever they desire to you, up to them willing to make you shoot yourself. She was incredibly brave to be in such a vulnerable position.
    Had I been a participant, I doubt I could bring myself to do anything untoward to Marina, even with the explicit permission to do whatever I want. I'm too much of an empath. Of anything, I'd only end up getting in the way of the others trying to harm and assult her.

    I have memories of those geometric fever dreams from very early childhood, including rhythmic/repetitive auditory patterns giving way to crushing, all-encompassing, yet strangely expectant silence (but for my own heartbeat). Kinda spooky to finally hear someone else mention any of it after like 30 years.

    1:10:00 i'm almost 100% sure this is a remnant of when cavemen of different subspecies (homo sapiens/erectus/neanderthalensis etc) had to somehow distinguish each other. The different species did just straight up kill eachother afterall.
