- 'Drunken Angel' directed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshiro Mifune & Takashi Shimura was released in 1948 as the 6th feature film in Kurosawa's filmography, and the first of 16 to feature Toshiro Mifune. It tells the story of Yakuza Matsunaga, juggling his gang life with his attempt to get his tuberculosis treated by Doctor Sanada. It's a tragic noir about the nature of humanity and explores the environment of Post-WW2 Tokyo. For me, Drunken Angel is the most underrated classic of Kurosawa's career, and one that deserves more love and recognition.

Drunken angel was an addicting watch. Shimura killed it as the good doctor. My heart broke knowing that Matsunaga could not defeat his demons
Matsunaga is similiar to the flower he tossed into the polluted pond in the city. He just felt there was no way out of his circumstance and just gave in, and so he met his fate. It's tragic because he believes he has zero agency in his life.
A book that I think you would like, that delves into that concept, is BEYOND GAMES AND SCRIPTS by Dr. Eric Berne M.D.
His book, THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY is on youtube, Though Beyond Games and Scripts is the book that delves deep into the subjects of agency and life patterns.
@@loganmartin6534 thanks for the reccommendation
@forgetfulstranger NOT a problem 👌 if you want to take your reading a step further, my favorite book by Dr. ERIC Berne is WHAT DO YOU SAY AFTER YOU SAY HELLO? this book not only gets into life cycles and agency, it also teaches you how to communicate with everyone from your average joe to Norman Bates
If the Dr. Had this book under his belt, he might have been able to get through to him.
Just stumbled upon your video and really appreciated it. Drunken Angel is really a Top 5 Kurosawa for me. It touches me every single time I watch it. I am also so fascinated by that period in Japan that immediately followed the war and I don’t know too many other films that shed light on that like this one does. Mifune is great, of course, but Shimura is really the heart and soul of this film. I love all the films that these two did together with Kurosawa.
I really loved No Regrets for Our Youth.. it instantly became one of my favorite movies of his. I would still say his first bona fide classic is Stray Dog.
When I saw this video pop up I ran to go watch this movie, thank you so much for fleshing this masterpiece out and giving much needed cultural context to it, I really enjoy the humanity in kurasawa’s films and videos like this make it all the more better, thank you so much for making this video!!!!
I watched this movie without English subtitles and still managed to understand some parts of it. What a story! And your reviews on this movie clarify all the misunderstanding I had. Thanks
Really good review man, I want to add just 2 things.
-You said correctly that Matsunaga symbolises the man who wants to change but can’t break away from his old corrosive habits. So Kurosawa do a movie about a Yakuza falling apart but in reality it’s a movie about us. I felt sad when i understood that “I’m literally him” (Drive music) because also I have habits i want to free myself from, so this can seem like a classic noir but holy shit this is a fucking masterpiece about human condition
-Kurosawa uses the expedient of WW2 to create these toxic lakes, former bombing sites. He does it so he can have an evident representation of the vortex of evil and human sins literally in everyday life, he makes us reflect about the fact that it’s so easy nowadays to fall and be corrupted, violence is now the order of the day.
What a brilliant genius.
Akira Kurosawa is a master cinematic genius. No wonder Tarantino loved borrowing from him. Found your content via Reddit. Liked and subbed.
Agreed, and thank you!
Nice one brother

I don't think I have left anything to say,you didn't say. Watched it yesterday. 8/10 for me.
Great video i love this film
Great Movie
Amazing video! I completely agree with everything here. Despite that though, there is another akira kurosawa movie that i think is even more underrated than drunken angel, and that is the lower depths. I would be really curious to hear what your thoughts about that movie is, because i believe it to be his most philosophically dense work, even more so than rashomon.
Oh and also hooray on the new youtube policy giving smaller creators more impressions than before! Without that I wouldn't have found your channel

Hi
@@ReturningSunn 👋 should I see drunken angle for myself first or watch
Doesn’t matter honestly I don’t think watching the video will really hinder your experience with the film if you do plan on watching it.
@@ReturningSunn I'll watch it with my dinner then
You said most movies the hero learns and grows but that is a VERY western (american) view of movies...
