I listened to this every day for six months in my art studio in Texas. My sister was 800 miles away in the midwest, dying from cancer. This song got me through the three months of her dying and the three months after she was gone. There's no lesson here, just a thanks to the band that helped me through those moments with this incredible song.
goes to show the power of music and how different meanings can come out of songs and I am sorry for your loss. I have a sister and cannot imagine losing her so for that I say you are a very strong person. I hope you have found peace.
+Brian Bullard Thank you for sharing this. I'm not a huge fan of this band but I respect any band that can make powerful enough music to help others get through tough times. I hope you're doing well and I hope things are looking up, take care.
I was in a hospital, on a hold when he died. I was completely SHATTERED. We lost a good one. My absolute, favorite vocalist and artist. Rest easy, Chris.
Its just Soundgarden, not "Soundgarden and Chris Cornell" the band wouldn't have worked without each individual in place. Soundgarden are one of the best bands of all time though, yes.

To be excited by music, you have to step outside of what is commercially successful. There is always good music being made, but much of it is made by people you may not have listened to. Also, try a new genre, for a change. I wasn't into country music until 2017, when I decided to immerse myself into it. Now, with some time, I've come to love it. Every genre generally has something to excite you, if you try. 😁👍

+Dewayne C Truly, this song is not about feeling invincible. It literally says "Not one for giving up though not invincible I know." This is a pledge of endurance, but at the same time wisely recognizing his own mortal frailty. A true mark of humility. Believe it or not, this song is holy. You're right that it is about rejecting the outside world, but more important than that, rejecting all the hateful, degraded, morally depraved ways (not the Earth itself). Chris is literally doing a Jesus Christ pose, he is positioned so as to look as if he is on a cross. In other words, he's watching the world, and at the same time being sacrificed for it. Until the end of the video, his mind, his spirit, his soul overcomes the world, and destroys it. A lot of parallels to Christ's message.
ebannaw The way I see it is that he is being fed information by the outside world, until its twisted morals and conventions drive him insane, which leads him to blow up everything. If you wanna see Jesus in there I guess but I don't think that symbolism needs to be invoked. After all this video is an homage to A clockwork orange, a film which questions our sense of morality by asking whether it is good to do evil to evil. In the end, morality is corrupt, the world is a contradiction and Chris is a big ol nihilist like me lol.
I wasted my 20's and half of my 30's. I'm not doing it anymore. Life is for me to live, not run and hide from. Chris, this one will be for you my friend. You gave us more than enough, hopefully I can take what you gave me and i can build something beautiful and positive from it.
Rusty Shackleford Look up Teal Swan and Elliott Hulse. They will save you by showing you the mechanisms of your suffering. How can you be so sure that I'm bullshitting? You can't until you let go of your certainty in doubt (skepticism) to divulge in this. Try it out, you will learn a lot
@@aristophanesghost3839 what do u mean? I saw sound garden live in Sacramento in ⁹97? I'm a boys out and prepper. Excuse me. Sorry I didn't know I was out of my lane? Lol
Yeah. There really was.😢 I truly miss him and Layne. They had different takes on the same angle. Both spoke my truth. I lived through it. They didn't. How fucked up is that?
Nicolás Riveros One of my favourite riffs of all time and this is coming from a guy that listens to heavy metal bands that shit riffs like they drink alcohol.
Layne and Chris didn't just sing, their words conveyed a message and painted pictures, why they are both loved and so sadly missed. RIP Chris and Layne
I always think of The Day I Tried To Live as the great foreshadowing in his music. Both very sad in any case, along with his demise. Unfortunately, it's no longer an artists world.
My older brother, who i looked up to growing up. (Dad was never around, and when he was , just to beat me up with all kinds of things). He gave me for my 14th birthday. This CD and green day's " nookie". I listened to this every single day . Music was my escape per say.
Word word word actually balled my eyes out when this guy shuffled off I don't pretend to know if it was sex or suicide . I was so hanging for some more HIM
I think when a reporter asked him about this song if he'd really want to "blow up the outside world" and he said something to the effect of "absolutely - i think about it everyday"
it seems that there was a great cost for the depth, honesty and beauty in the intensity and caliber of music and artistry in much of the 90s. I am so grateful to the many musicians who bled their soul in their music. The courage it takes to share your darkest secrets with the world.
Very well said. A music that bares the soul is by definition a dangerous music - dangerous to listen to, and certainly dangerous to write, if you're of a certain self-destructive and self-loathing disposition, as Chris was (and this is something I know more than a little about, let's just leave it at that)....one of the reasons I love 'grunge', whatever the hell that was supposed to be, is because it is earnest, in a business that doesn't encourage honesty and commitment to being oneself. This music wasn't afraid to be abrasive, passionate and deep. To be itself. You gotta respect that, and even more now, when music has devolved into bland and oppressive beat-heavy, intelligence-lite pap made by any fool with a laptop.....
this song got me thru 4 dark years. I listened to this in my bunk and cried and felt a release every time. Thank u soundgarden for everything u have shared with us wretched souls. Rest in peace Chris. I hope u found yr release like u gave me mine...
The state of the world right now in 2020 amid this COVID-19 global pandemic, police brutality & ensuing race riots. Time to BLOW THIS OUTSIDE WORLD UP! Praying there's light at the end of this dark tunnel in the aftermath. This Soundgarden song predicted the global psychological conditioning going on right now in 2020. RIP Chris Cornell. It's gotta be a whole lot better in the afterlife. STAY SAFE EVERYBODY! 🤘😷☣
For me Soundgarden is absolutely the greatest grunge band. Unreachable like Mount Everest for a simple mortal! For me Chris Cornell is the greatest Musician, Poet, Vocalist and Person ever existed in a body of a One Simple Man
On the subject of Chris being 52.. I am 51.. id didnt dawn on me til the other day that these bands were the bands of my generation.. the Soundgardens.. the Nirvanas.. the Smashing Pumpkins.. the NIN the STPs the...Pearl Jams .. but you know what as much tragedy as there has been.. such a wealth of good music... these people single handedly saved us from hair rock and lipstick... godspeed you black emperors
I cant believe it... I have passed through very rough times the last few months and the thing that made me keep walking was Chris´s songs. I even thought of siuicide but here I am, alive, and there he is, dead. How fair is that? I have been listening to blowing up the outside world, pretty nose, fell on black days and other every single day. It made me feel so comforting and aunderstood. Chris's soul is eternal. I regret so much not having seen you in concert. I love you man. Say hello to heaven. Hopefully someday we will see you there.
Dammit, your comment is making me cry right now. I literally looked up when Soundgarden was gonna release their next album a week ago. That would have been my 1st time seeing them - timing just never worked out w/me. Now all of that will never come to pass, but that is besides the point. You're right - his soul is with eternity now. Hope he's having a great old time w/Scott, Layne, Kurt, Andy, and all the other spectacular musicians up there. RIP Chris 💗 😭
Marcos JA..You understand what he was trying to say. A person with chronic depression wants to, at times, blow up the fucking outside world. Tragically, he did...
I finally understand this song, dont let society get to you manipulate you make u dosile and depressed try not let yourself be consumed by pure pressure and manipulative liars. stay true to yourself and not be forced to bend to societys outlook of reality.
Day 3: Still crying. But at least I'm not binge listening to Emerson, Lake and Palmer anymore. ELP got me off Bowie when Keith Emerson died, then Prince got me off both. Then there was Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen mixed in there too.(but they were more expected). Then back to ELP when Greg Lake died to bookend a horrible year. Then John Wetton, which returned back into prog rock exclusively since February. But Chris (whom I met once while living in Seattle) is devastation. Like Greg Lake, Chris Cornell's voice and lyrics were a touchstone that kept me ALIVE through very difficult times. All my sages are leaving this plane. Long live Eddie Vedder, PLEASE.
‘nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try’ that line hits hard now, especially with it being 5 years ago today edit: I meant five years since he died, sorry that wasn’t clear
ah man, for me it's still the saddest rock n roll death. The fact it wasn't a depression suicide, but a psychosis/medis induced suicide, doesn't seem to be a well known enough fact. Gosh its sad he's gone.
Yes so sad. So tragic & the fact his wife was trying to get security to check on him for hours . I'd give you everything I own…. To blow it to hell and gone.
I so agree with you. To be honest, I didn't know how much he had impacted my life until he died. I mean yup, I was in my twenties in the 90s and have followed Chris Cornell from band to band and through solo periods just because he was this great singer. But when I heard of his death i became really emotional about it, which was sort of weird, because I didn't know I liked him so much. I started watching interviews and that led to more interviews and that led to social media posts and pictures and suddenly he just wasn't this incredible singer/musician he was this truly amazing man who was a loving father and husband and devoted family man, who was actually really funny, really honest, and a really great and loyal friend. Everybody that ever knew him loved him and talked really great about him - and that was while he was alive! So when I started seeing people all over the place taking cheap shots at him and using misinformation in such a hurtful and destructive manner I decided "hey, I'm gonna to stick up for Chris Cornell!" Why? Because I think he deserves it and I think his family needs it. Now Granted, I still think the bodyguard is a suspect - but I make no apologies on calling people out or correcting them on information that they are using incorrectly or are not understanding. in fact I will probably do it for the rest of my life - I will be that relative in years to come that everyone is warned at family gatherings to not mention anything about Chris Cornell hanging himself or the investigation because I doubt I will ever be convinced that he killed himself and I know I will always want to stick up for him!
That sighing, downbeat hard rock of Black Sabbath fused with the Beatles was such a brilliant sound and aspect of 90's rock. I really miss that time. Soundgarden was definitely the heaviest of the decade.
Thanks for being the soundtrack of showers, road trips and late night drinking sessions.. I feel like a part of my youth passed away as well, RIP Chris Cornell.. 😥😢
The line before that one is "Don't let the world bring you down"......and the line after it is "So save it for your own and the ones you can help." You're doing a disservice to yourself and others taking it out of context. Nothing seem to kill me no matter how hard I try Nothing is closing my eyes Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight And nothing seems to break me No matter how far I fall nothing can break me at all Not one for giving up though not invincible I know I've givin' everything I need I'd give you everything I own I'd give in if it could at least be ours alone I've given everything I could To blow it to hell and gone Burrow down and Blow up the outside world Someone tried to tell me something Don't let the world bring you down Nothing will do me in before I do myself So save it for your own and the ones you can help Want to make it understood Wanting though I never would Trying though I know it's wrong Blowing it to hell and gone Wishing though I never could Blow up the upside world
I always thought Chris and Layne Staley were playing up the notion of mental illness in their lyrics. I was so fucking wrong. It was straight from the heart with them, and I was too dumb to see it.
It's awesome that you interpret Chris & Layne with a better ear now. I grew up listening to them so it was never an issue for me hearing exactly what it was as new music. It seems lately the younger generation getting into SG have a preconception and hear everything as brought on by mental illness or depression. It's just the Blues man! People have been singing the blues for Centuries...doesn't mean they're clinically depressed. Depressed people don't do what Chris did...which was rock THOUSANDS of shows for Millions of fans. He had some demons...sure...and those are what brought out his dark/bluesey side...but to listen with the bias of how his life ended (hazed by meds) isn't fair. It's hard to avoid but we gotta try harder...like I similarly did with Jim Morrison & the Doors when I started listening to them for example. Just turn that shit waaaay up and if it makes you move (emotionally or physically) then move...simple as that.
You that line has haunted me ever since his passing. Chris was absolutely amazing to see live was lucky to catch them in 91 and 6 months later in 92 before the whole seattle seen blew up. He was a great artist.
He did more than just hang on. He rocked thousands of shows for millions of fans don't forget...that is virtually unprecedented. Just think about the energy and willpower it takes to do that. He was smart and channeled it in the right way and we can all learn something from that.
Nothing like waking up to find out one of your favorite singers died. Chris's music provided the soundtrack to my high school years. It was a pleasure growing up in the late-80s and early-90s with so many great bands to choose from. Good music was coming at us right and left. Chris left us way too early. Hope he's jamming with Jimi, Kurt, Layne, Scott, and a long list of other legends. RIP, Chris, and thank you so much for your contributions to music. Music has lost quite a talent today.
Rare is a talent that can invoke sadness and happiness all in ssme song. It drips with so much melancholy yet inspires at same time. Cornell did it effortlessly and always remained the consumate professional. R.I.P. Mr. Chris Cornell. May you be soaring high and waking everyone daily with your GLORIOUS ROAR.
Superman & Lois is the definitive Superman story for me. A consistently great soundtrack. This was one of the most extreme cliffhanger on a show since Star Trek’s best of both worlds pt1!
I absolutely adored his eyes, the way they could speak to the soul; there’s nothing that could compare. I could stare at him for hours without getting tired.. such a timeless man. I hope he’s in the best place ever now and that he finally found peace.

I had listened to this song so many times and for some reason I had never really apreciated the solo untill recently it really is one of the best ever.
The darkness that depression engulfs is insanely overwhelming. It's so hard to explain it, unless you have lived through it. I post this to tell all troublesome people struggling, you are not alone...
It terrifies me that everyone was so shocked at the death of this legend. All of his lyrics scream pain and suicide. I guess it goes to show you that some people just really don’t know how to listen. I can relate brother. Rock on Chris
Maybe it’s what he wanted, for reasons only he could understand. Maybe it was the art that he created that demanded he lived in that sort of life expression?
"....Someone tried to tell me something Don't let the world bring you down Nothing will do me in before I do myself So save it for your own and the ones you can help...." Love and Respect to you and yours Chris.
I was just listening to Joey Diaz on his podcast (The church of what’s happening now). He said something interesting. That this was Chris mirroring the Beatles. And when I listen to it with that in mind, I hear it. The chord progression. The echo of the vocal. The vocal melody. Even the little guitar solo riffs with the reverb and echo. I thought that was pretty cool. That being said, Chris Cornell and Soundgarden were my generations Beatles. Killer talent. RIP Chris. The best show I have ever seen in my lifetime was a Chris Cornell solo acoustic show in Pittsburgh. There are no close seconds to that performance.
Written back when there wasn't a fill-in template for a hit song, and thus the songs were crafted in a timeless manner that makes them relevant decades later
I'd imagine he's quite well compensated (money wise, anyways) playing with PJ nowadays. That being said, his talents generally go to waste playing in the style Eddie and the gang write songs---Matt was always at his best like here, precision power, and keeping the band's often odd-metered rhythms nailed down (although this particular one is straight 4/4, i believe).
They have their own sound in so many ways, I can't even explain. They can do the 80's metal sound, grunge, hard rock - They're so great! Such a perfect band.
Nothing sums up what it felt like to grow up in 1996, for me that is, like this song does. The alternating explosions of rage and numbed lethargy, the solipsism of the lyrics, those wonderfully angular, distorted guitar riffs. Just when you want to look back on adolescence with rose tinted spectacles, the falsifying lenses of nostalgia, this song puts you back in the real thing and does it raw.
What a powerful video, a great social criticism and also a beautiful tribute to "a clockwork orange". I remember watching it countless times on MTV, the old good MTV, as a teenager. We miss you so much, Chris :(

@@ikhaatjullieallemaalpersoo5715 too much garbage to wade through to find good stuff. Better off spending time doing better things. Same goes for all of entertainment and pop culture.
@@prehistorymysteryI find torrent trending date helpful. What people share matters more than what they might tolerate on streams and radio. Generally you will find that the current trend data has some good stuff in it.
Some will be commercially successful, some not. The lack of perspective and knowledge about an artist or album can sometimes be helpful.
@@prehistorymysteryyou’re saying this on TH-cam. Where all ya have to do is search something you like, and the algorithm will take you down all the appropriate rabbit holes. You can’t be serious.
A perfect example of how a depressing song about depressing things can make a depressed person so very happy.
Patrick Storey Its about rejecting the outside world and its bullshit to feel invincible, at least that's my interpretation.
sooo true there
+Dewayne C No, it's not just your interpretation :)
You're right
+Dewayne C
Truly, this song is not about feeling invincible.
Aim for world domination. Take back what's yours friend
Start by changing that user name lol, I'm sure it doesn't help
You’re loved, my friend! 👍⚡️⚡️😘
You can do it. I pray for you and your family. :)
This is deeper and more symbolic than I ever realized.

it seems that there was a great cost for the depth, honesty and beauty in the intensity and caliber of music and artistry in much of the 90s.

Nice.
I've cried more over his death than I ever have over anything else and i've been dragged through the mud. His music meant so much to me.
These guys were so overshadowed and underrated. The best rock bands to come out of Seattle
That sighing, downbeat hard rock of Black Sabbath fused with the Beatles was such a brilliant sound and aspect of 90's rock. I really miss that time. Soundgarden was definitely the heaviest of the decade.

These songs are all the more tragic looking back. A man in serious pain trying to hang on. It breaks my heart.
Song can only be truly enjoyed at max volume
exactly
Agreed
Confirm
Yeh superman & lois ... super intense ... soundtrack perfect 🥰
one of the most beautiful guitar solo ever
I had listened to this song so many times and for some reason I had never really apreciated the solo untill recently it really is one of the best ever.
We really miss those days, those bands, and the ups and downs of life. We were happy and we didn't know it. Love to Soundgarden
This song is so hypnotic and tortured...has such a 90s or early 2000's feel to it too...simpler times
1996
The 90s all day
Listen 'Soda Stereo - Sueles Dejarme Solo'.
To any JRE listeners who are just discovering Soundgarden for the first time - WELCOME 🥰
A voice like no other, a songwriter with extraordinary talent.
Two great grunge bands, Soundgarden and Nirvana, both lost their lead singers to suicides.
RIP Chris Cornell and Kurt Cobain.
No one will take it serious till they know what its like
Maybe it’s what he wanted, for reasons only he could understand. Maybe it was the art that he created that demanded he lived in that sort of life expression?
if you think he killed himself you aren't a real fan

"....Someone tried to tell me something
Don't let the world bring you down
Nothing will do me in before I do myself
So save it for your own and the ones you can help...."
Love and Respect to you and yours Chris.
THESE DAYS I CANNOT STOP LISTENING TO BLOW UP THE OUTSIDE WORLD.
I feel like this towards "The Day I Tried To Live"
I'm there now, OP
Sometimes I almost forget....then I'm listening and it hits me
Damn, dude, you're missed and we're so grateful for what you left us
I was just listening to Joey Diaz on his podcast (The church of what’s happening now).
This is such a powerfully positive song!!! Never give up, and always take the high road…
Hi I Recommend a song that's called 'The Bond Villain' by Robert Nix
Just found out about this song in the finale for superman and lois. Holy shit is it good

ive givin everything to be blown to hell and gone.. black hole sun plz save me
That drummer never got the fame he deserved. Absolutely brilliant drummer.
It is ironic you state that, and not mention his name.... (His name is Matt Cameron btw), and yes, he deserves more recognition.
I remember kurt Cobain giving him props in an interview
Yessir
Matt Cameron wrote the book on how to serve the song with his drumming
Nobody can sing like chris..... We miss you.....
We miss you so much, Chris :(
It's a tribute to the Parallax View th-cam.com/video/zzGstwUOero/w-d-xo.html
one of my 90's fav..pearl jam, sound garden, nirvana,....long live genX..also X games till now still d best and improving..🤘🤘🤘
Stacey Barns dumbass i did not complain instead am reminisching the 90's which am proud that i was part of...Good music u said? d best are the 70's 80's and 90's the genX time..now u listen to d crappy beiber shit and the like!!i suggest u listen to pearl jam's yellow ledbetter..its a song that God sent to vedder to share to us....and also 🖕🖕🖕 millenial shit!
agreed! Stacey Barns likes to read things out of context. Its ok though, as long as you know what you like and can reminisce about the good times. I was born in 85, the 90's were fucking awesome! These strange days we live in now are synthetic crap...
Garrett Blakeslee 👍got u their!am born 1976 listened to the evolution of music...we the genX will never be forgotten...that movie Pixels of adam sandler reminds me of the times...by d way him too is genX!cool ha!
Stacey Barns i know those bands...if they were any good i would have mentioned them...and dumbass i was commenting on this band that it sounded great back then till now..thats why i said am reminiscing the past...were not talking bout ur shit bands now...note this, nothing beats the bands of 90's..the bands u mentioned are just copycats of the past...dont be fucking lazy now, go search the best bands of the 90's!
Music yes, games not at all.
He's been telling us for decades.
Thaeda - This comment has stuck with me since I first read it. :-( So true....
Thaeda - I don't think you understand this song if you think it has anything to do with suicide
What hes telling here is how shitty and superficial modern life is and how hes trying its affect on him
Looking back on all the lyrics I know by heart, I was thinking the same
maybe you dont understand it if you cant hear the cries of despair for us to free ourselves from this world 2.0 , a world where were exposed to so many external influences that we end up being literally brainwashed. marketing everywhere, trends that are dictated by some guru on top , lobbying at its best to keep us stock to the Wheel. were just the slaves of a new era, with an illusion of freedom.
It is really about how imperfect life is and how it is expressed. The letdown of parents, The anger toward judgement and reality. We all go through it.
Nothing seems to kill me
no matter how hard I try
Nothing is closing my eyes
Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight
And nothing seems to break me
No matter how hard I fall
Nothing can break me at all
Not one for giving up
though not invincible
I know I've givin' everything I need.
I'd give you everything I own.
I'd give in,
if it could at least be ours alone.
I've given everything,
I could,
To blow it to hell and gone.
Burrow down in,
and
blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside world
Someone tried to tell me something.
“Don't let the world bring you down?”
Nothing will do me in before I do myself.
So save it for your own
and the ones you can help
I've givin' everything I need.
I'd give you everything I own.
I'd give in,
if it could at least be ours alone
I've given everything I could
To blow it to hell ...and gone.
Burrow down in
and blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside world
Want to make it understood
Wanting though I never would
Trying though I know it's wrong
Blowing it to hell and gone
Wishing though I never could
Blow up the outside
My quintessential post-traumatic stress theme song
"My construct is too strong now to get out of it, so fuck off, save it for somebody who needs it"
The ultimate " I am tired of the shit" song!!!
No matter how far I fall*
The Dr. is in.....
This song is just pure raw emotion
YES STEPHEN BROWNING I AGREE 💯 PERCENT WITH YOUR COMMENT OMG THANKS JERSEY CITY HEIGHTS LORETTA WOW PEACE ✌️ OUT THANKS LORETTA ✌️
RIP CHRIS CORNELL! GOD THIS SONG GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS STILL AND REALLY LOOK AT IT DIFFERENTLY. ..This guy was screaming for someone, something to help him!
*I started in music because of Chris Cornell. 3 and a half decades of writing songs (playing guitar) and singing and it hit me so hard when Chris left us that I haven't picked up a guitar or sang since May 2017. I lost all drive.*
That's very sad. Hope you are doing well!
