Hi again, I started out studying the formal duplicate bridge but now want to play with friends who play only "party" or "rubber" bridge. They use a book that is out of print from 1967, "At the Bridge Table" by Jo Woods. I am trying to learn from it but a lot of it is written I partial sentences, and I cannot seem to understand all of it. Can you recommend a place I can take lessons in the more casual game without the complicated conventions? I know you have a website with so many videos, and I have really enjoyed the ones I have watched. However, since I am so new and want to play with the friends I mentioned and I am from the USA, I am not sure of the direction I should take. Any advice would be appreciated.
Nope, that is something you do once you have found a fit. Re-evaluate your hand with total points (High card points + shortage points), where I like to add 5 for a void, 3 for a singleton, and 1 for a doubleton.

You are describing SAYC (Standard American) which uses a strong opening 1 No Trump (15-17 points). I play Acol which uses a weak opening 1 No Trump (12-14 points). Happens more often and very preemptive. Nothing wrong with SAYC but I do think he should mention there are alternatives
I have a question. When I played bridge with a computer, my computer partner bid the most insane bids. Let me tell you what happened. My computer partner had 3 diamonds. and like 7 spades. It bid 1 diamond. I had 6 clubs, so I bid 2 clubs. Then my computer partner finally bids 2 spades, I had some decent spades in my hand. I won against the computer, but if I had never bid diamonds, we would have been stuck with 4 hearts between us. How does this make any kind of sense? I really don't get this.
It is hard to gauge without knowing what the hand actually was. Often if you are playing with a robot you can check the description of your bids and theirs. If something went off the rails I would look at the meaning of the bids. They might be bidding something artificial which you aren't used to.

I have been learning bridge for some time now but the bidding system I have learned is called Club Strong (specifically the Mumbai Club Strong) which is quite different from the one you have described. I want to now switch to a bidding system which is more widely recognized and I believe the American Contract System is possibly the most popular worldwide. May I know what you call the bidding system you have shown in this tutorial? Once again, thank you for this really excellent video.
Hi Vikram. I have described Standard American (or SAYC) it is also similar to a system 2/1. It sounds like you have been taught a system called precision which is still reasonably popular so I am sure you can find others that play that as well.

So...say I'm third seat, 16+ hcp's ( exactly in my case, the truth nothing but the truth not being the case in this case ), balanced, the bidding goes pass - pass back to me, and my humbleness bids 1C instead of 1N, and an 1N overcall is what follows, partner raises my 'dumbness', and despite the fact I'm missing the points, under the presumption my opponent is holding a 16+ balanced hand, I rebid an obvious 3SA, since it's easy for me to figure out where the remaining honors are supposed to be. Lucky me!
In my bridge world, a 1NT reply to your opening 1 C would tell me your partner has only 6-10 points, no 4-card major and fewer than 5 of your clubs. I would raise to 2 NT inviting partner to raise to game if they have the top of their range. It would be wrong to assume your partner has 16+ points since they have passed at their first opportunity to bid.
What happens when you are trying to indicate your calling p with a limit bid of 1NT as a responder or even 2NT as a second bid when I opened and everybody passes? It has happened to me a few times. Is the partner supposed to not pass? Cuz I really didnt want to call 2NT, I just called that to indicate my point range.
I am a novice and your videos supplement nicely what my instructor has taught. I'll be referring to them often. I love the game already and I want to be able to play in a tournament.

You should change what you call your extras to Magnum. That way you have Minimum, Medium, Maximum, and Magnum.

No, they are the overcaller not the opener. They would have 8+ points.

What I find particular confusing are the different biding systems. They seem to contradict each other at many levels.

ON BBO, It goes 1spade 4 spades by opponents. I have the other 3 suits so I bid 4 NT. Passed by my evil stupid bot. Of course disaster. Thats BBO!
I would just check the descriptions of high level bids with the robots before making them. Check the total point description as well.
