I used to do Aikido, and I still have my Jo which I always keep close to my heart. My senseis would always tell me: "The Jo signifies infinity. It has no end. One move can always flow into another."

I really like this series of stick/staff fighting.
One of the things i was really surprised when i found out, was why a lot of gentlemen back in the day were using canes - walking sticks. When i was younger, i thought there were just 2 purposes:
    - walking aid for leg problems
    - show of the status.
Then much later i realised it was an incredible self defence weapon you can use in various styles - as a stick or a rapier/sabre/short sword. And that last part is usually omitted. I wonder why? ;D

I am german, Brittas boyfriend and in my late 50s now. When i was a little boy, you could see a lot of rural ,gentlemen' carrying a cane ( or a cutaway blackthorn/hazelnut Stick) without needing a walking aid. Also in those days it was common, that dogowners had the dog Rope (?) in left hand and cane or stick in right hand.
An elderly man , i sometimes meet, told me, that when his father was a very young man, few people had a car or motorcycle. In those days most men of my homeregion had been craftsmen, workers and farmers at the same time, but they could not live alone from one job. Today my homeregion is a rich part of Germany, but then it was a poorer part. So a cow was in those days an expensive thing, and when in town Schorndorf the cattlemarket was, the ,small farm' owners visited the town with , for the time, a large sum of Money. They mostly came on foot and had to cross the for my region large Schurwald Forrest. The noted man told me, that in his fathers young years, the farmers marched to Schorndorf cattle Market in groups of three or more men, and everyone carried a cane or stick. My father often told me, that one of his greatfathers was a freight coach driver. One day he had on a lonely road in Schurwald Forrest a strange adventure with two unknown men. Before this, only carried his coachdrivers whip and a folder, but then He bought a knuckleduster, which was then an allowed and relatve cheap weapon.

I am a second Dan in Aikido and Ikkyu in Kendo. I studied Aikido in Coventry under Jim Irvine before moving on to learn under Kanetsuka sensei in Oxford. Never met such a small man who could pummel this (future, then serving) Royal Marine into the boards; yes, his Dojo didn't have mats, we trained on the wooden floor, where you knew if you had fallen correctly. Loved the art.

The Aikido style of Jo staff is very fluid and looks impressive but it has not been battlefield tested, all traditional martial arts grew out of warfare, therefore if a technique was written down in the scrolls and passed on it was because someone used it in real combat, survived and tthen passed on those aapects of the jo staff that actually work in a combat situation. All staff techniques in traditional japanese arts were taught as a framework or basis for "kengi" which is the skill of being able to utilise and weild any staff type object in combat.

In former days, long sticks/ staffs had been common everywhere in Europe, especially among travelling persons. When hiking sometimes, i personally noticed, that my perhaps 120 cm stick is a bit short , when hiking in mountainous terrain. I ,german, hope , that portugiese people can preserve this tradition into future. We Germans have lost nearly everthing of former martial arts, i think the , Thirty Years War' ( 1618 to 1648) , which killed a third of my Nation was a reason for this.
