    I love your videos, but I have one statement about your siding project. Someone asked do you install from right to left or left to right. Your answer is correct. It doesn’t matter, but to add to that, you should start on the back side, so when or as you come around to the front, you will over lap the front piece on top of the back piece. So, when you look at it, you virtually can’t see the seems.

    • @andrewhayward9539
      @andrewhayward9539 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This only works if it is against the wind. Where I live that is only preferred and not practical. We get some crazy winds in Southern Alberta mostly from the west so we have to lap the siding away from the west or you will be looking at a bare wall in no time at all.

New siding windows,, Plus I've learned that a 1.5in foam envelope will only add about $1400 to my job. That should start paying me back in Michigan soon,, and in 3-4 years that project will have paid for itself.

    Thank you so much for the advise to purchase a Laser level! We had our 30 year old fixer upper foundation leveled prior to our DIYer renovation. I litterly use it for everything! I've done our windows,trim,doors,counters,cabinets etc. Oh and yes we even used it to reinstall our toilets! Lol! As to my choice of siding, in an ideal world, money allowing, I would go with, preferably Dutch lap style cementitious siding, and for multiple or at least two reasons! Superior fire protection & rot resistance! I know vinyl is probably cheaper but god Forbit a barbeque get to close!

  • @PatFlanigan

    To offer my response to one of your questions about siding, cement board is what I think would be best. You asked why? I tested using cement board on a huge carport building project, back in 2011 and it has still held up and with zero need to repaint! The main home, that of my parents build new in 1983, is cedar siding....which is a pain in the (you know what) because every 4 yrs the cedar siding has to be oil stained! UGH....anyway....you have my two cents worth of an opinion....love how you included time segments now in your longer vids...so much easier to identify segments to review. 💚💯🇨🇦

    • @naughtyorgneiss
      @naughtyorgneiss 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @MegsCarpentry-lovedogs
      @MegsCarpentry-lovedogs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@naughtyorgneiss Just caught your reply. Cement board is also called Hardi plank. It is a mixture of cement with fibers in it. To put it on your predrill then set your screw of nail. • @kevinbaker2470
      @kevinbaker2470 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey frank, the reason for using non modified cement , was because the Duroc board used as the base layer, is made from Portland cement sandwiched between fiberglass mesh . When done properly, like materials adhere and bond best, when using two different mediums, the space where they meet is vulnerable for cracking

    How come when people talk about building a house to be very air-tight, they don't mention the effect of using hinged doors. Unless I'm wrong, if you're not using pocket or sliding doors, inside & entry, you're gonna bust through the envelope in a relatively short time. Maybe even break through it in an unfortunate location... like the attic floor over a shower. The "experts" talk about an acceptable amount of air leakage, but these measurements concern the amount of air flow over the course of an hour or one minute, and they fail to address the quick displacement of air from a quickly opened front door.

    Any suggestions for an upstairs tub that doesn't drain? It's an 1889 house and I'm terrified if I use CLR or cleaner (it has galvanized steel pipes) I'm gonna have a massive problem. I am no expert, but I had an old house (1895) with slow drains and galvanized pipe. I learned that the pipe rusted in the inside narrowing the inside diameter (picture stalactites and stalagmites growing towards each other within the pipe). I was advised to replace the old plumbing with Pex. I was surprised to learn how easy and affordable it was to make the update.

      Hey Stephanie, I'm assuming you're DIYing, by your question, and watching this guy's videos. Old homes typically have old drum traps, originally thought to be helpful in case of a wedding ring getting dropped into drain. First step is to identify the best way to access the drain pipes, if the wall the drain is located in an interior wall, and you can cut it from the opposite side, that is usually the easiest (not including houses with unfinished basements) removing the Tub to get to the innards is always an option, and gives you a chance to get work done. On Amazon, you can buy a cheap endoscope, of the semi rigid variety , I bought a 40 ft version with a standalone 5.5 inch screen and dual cameras and recording on sale for 35$. Highly recommend for any DIYer, saves money, and you can use to navigate and discover the insides of your wall, chimney flue, and my favorite, the condition of your drain pipes. Work smart, nothings worse than having one project, turn into 6, if you want to send me pictures and background info, I can give a more detailed plan of attack, and tips,+tricks to make your job easier. Always love giving plumbing advice, and if you think my advice saves you alot of time and money, any tip for my time is appreciated, but only wanted if you whole heartedly find i added value Message me on YT or email kevin206baker@gmail and

    We’re currently have a mix T1-11 8OC and 12OC (house patched up since the 70’s). We’re thinking of adding 2” of ISO to the outside and siding using either Hardie plank, or Hardie Panels. I think panels will be quicker to install and are cheaper overall.

    If there is one exterior renovation project I would say to DIY it’s your roof. It’s by far is the easiest when it comes to what you have to do. Like the old timers say, it’s not rocket science…. We had these people own a camp on a lake in Canada give us a month free stay at their fishing camp to come up and do their roof which took us one day, and they bought the materials. Is this a Canadian thing? Do you guys not like to do roofs? I’m seriously asking, I’m not trying to be a smart Alec. Have you just had no experience with roofs and you choose not to do them? I know it’s not really a handyman thing, but it’s not as hard as you think to do it right.
