I used to play an organ when I was a little girl that my grandfather bought me. That’s been 28 years now and any practice has completely left my mind haha. I just bought a piano and am wanting to start playing country gospel hymns. My husband is a preacher at a small church here in NC and we don’t have anyone that plays piano. So my hope is that the Lord will assist me with my playing to I can start serving in church and assisting with the music. I just loved your brothers playing, he did fantastic! I am 52 and I'm just learning how to play the Piano. I have been playing the guitar, Bass guitar and I am a professional studio drummer for over 35 years. Now I decided to learn how to play the piano. My style I'm learning is Southern Gospel like this but with a hint of Floyd Cramer as well. By the time I'm Glens age, I should doing pretty well. God bless you Glen and thank you for putting this on TH-cam. This encouraged me to keep practicing.

I am a humble ear player and I learn it myself a kind of a self taught, I can't play quicly yet but suficient to sort of say wel done girl. May I just ask you: is it different when one sings and accompany oneself, than the way you'are playing. I have a feeling that it is... The melody is sung and taken care that way and is just the accompaniament to "worry" about? And every person has their own stile of playing and that is a touch diferent than when looking at a music score, even that can be played in varous ways, too. Important is to sound ok and nice. You see dear brother I know no music theory... I'm not good at maths(music likes maths☺) I don't, so I feel it in my heart, hear it in my head and sit and put it together. I hope I am right what I do, what do you say? Thank you for sharing such a wonderful hymn, bless you.
Yes, my brother plays the piano by ear, he took piano lessons just a very short time and the teacher didn't want to play the song for him because he would just play it by ear and so he didn't learn that way. Yes he plays the melody as he's playing the piano but you're right when he's playing for somebody at church or a special there's even more runs and pretties in there somewhere along the line maybe I can video him at church playing a special not sure how the sound will come through thank you and keep playing that's what I do is I am also by ear but I can play a little bit by note on those easy notes in a song book at church but not strictly. I'm not sure you've heard the songs that I have seen and played here not near as good as my brother but we all do something different God bless you and thank you for commenting ️ ❤️

This helped me so much! I have been a church pianist for 20yrs. It always has been a challenge to know how and when to transition from one octave playing the melody to the higher octave and back again. Also, I love the riffs and especially the ragtime version. One more thing. My style in the left hand (bass) I use in most church hymns a ragtime style. Lower octave to upper octave on the second and fourth beat. I had an aunt who played so well and could make any song move and groove so easily. Searching for an easy style like hers to learn from. She passed before I could get the full lesson.
