I have both the MinnKota and the Motorguide for my Hobie PA14 360...... my MinnKota didn't last a year before the GPS board malfunctioned.... I bought the Motorguide at the beginning of this year and I 1000% love the Motorguide over the MinnKota. I'll be buying an Xi5 for my boat before I can't find them anymore.
As a Team Nucanoe member I am pumped for you guys to bring this option to light more for everyone! I have a 55lb powerdrive I took off my boat when I upgraded to an ultrex. I will be modifying it and installing it on my U10. Going to be cool to compare with your guys experiences! Also, the shaft is usually cut by the head unit. Tight lines guys!
Thanks for buying and experimenting with different bow mounts motors, kayaks, rods, reels, lures, etc. I learn so much from your videos. It always helps me figure out what I might want to add or may not add to my kayak and you guys are always entertaining!
If anyone’s interested, you can buy the powerdrive and take it to a full authorized minn kota service center and have the shaft professionally cut. There’s a map you can use on their website to find them. Warranty safe. May have been mentioned in the video I could have missed it. But there are more options if mariner sails doesn’t have it.
I have the minnkota powerdrive i called a couple authorized service locations and was told we will cut it down but not responsible for the wires if get cut and your warranty is void, minnkota will not warranty if it has been modified
@ Taken directly from Minn kota’s website: “We recommend having the shaft shortened at an Authorized Service Center. If your motor is under warranty and you shorten the shaft yourself, it will void your warranty. If the shaft is shortened at an Authorized Service Center, it will not void your Minn Kota warranty.” Sounds like either Minn kota isn’t being clear to your dealers, or those dealers aren’t listening to Minn kota. Either way keep your receipts for any service they do.
Looks like a great solution. I really wish there was more competition to bring the price down. Autoboat Smart Head mod kit is $700 and can be added to almost any trolling motor. So you could get into a GPS motor for less than a thousand. Thats really where these should be.
It's easy to cut any shaft. I found a used Motor Guide with two remotes for $150, purchased brand new 'old stock' base plate and coiled cord, both for $90, then cut the shaft. Saved so much $ on my trolling motor, that I purchased a NK300 and three li batteries during the BF sales.
It may be easy to some, difficult or risky for others. We totally get where you are coming from, but most people just want to have the product ready to go
Only issue with that is warranty is immediately void if the shaft is cut by anyone other than a certified Minn kota service center. That’s a big deal to some.
FYI - I just purchased a Minn Kota Powerdrive from Nucanoe for $1,599. My U10 arrives next week. Please hurry up and post an installation video as well as options to address the deployment and retrieve of the motor. I have been unsure how to address this issues. Thanks for your videos to help us newbies jumping into the fishing kayak world.
Motorguide and Lowrance are both owned by Brunswick for a very long time. Lowrance didn't buy Motorguide it just made sense to unify the name. I am sure they will offer the same products as they are not just going to walk away from that revenue.
Bunny mod is a charm. Got a v2 powerdrive i-pilot on the jonboat. Spotlock and just put a speed at a constent mph and go upstreams in the river and use the pedal to avoid all the structure. You basicly can driftfish upstreams. It would be cool if they did a slimed down pedal to better fit kajaks. In the best of worlds It would just be a "ball-controller" think oldschool pc-mouse. You press down the ball to speed up and maybe dubble tap it to have constent drive.
The cut for the motor is in the head of the trolling motor. Tiny boat nation has a video on it. I think MinnKota the future of entry level kayak trolling motors.
Since they built the Bonafide XTR 130 to stand on the deck I should not have any issues getting to the front! So do I have let them know when I purchase it I want the 36 inch cut to be done? “Insamation” ummm I had to look it up and it kept bringing up “insemination” please tell me that’s not what you wanted to say cause I’m dying right now 😂😂😂! Great review you keep bringing the most needed content I’m getting so hyped up to start my journey!!! Let’s go and then I’m coming out to your part of the world to do some awesome bass fishing with you guys!!!!
I started to type a response before I watched your video. Apparently any authorized service center can modify the shaft length and warranty still applies.
i added this unit with the longer shaft of course to my 16 ft lund... i am disappointed with how much muscle it takes to get the motor back and forth in the mount... i would never be able to accomplish in a kayak...
Hey I'm 14 and I was going to build a Nucanoe unlimited next summer and I was really looking forward to buying the Xi3 because of its spot lock feature. Now that they are going to be no more I was wondering what I should do. I was already at the top of my budget with the build and I really don't want to now pay even more. I was wondering if I should buy the motor now before they go out of stock and before I buy the yak, or just wait till hopefully Lawrence comes out with a kayak spot lock motor. I really don't want a stern motor but if nothing for the bow comes out by summer next year I guess ill just have to buy it. I was wondering what you guys think I should do. I really don't know what to do because I was so set on buying the Xi3. Thank You
We have both. The Xi3 is still for sale at certain stores like mariner sails, bass pro, etc. just grab one if you can! Or look for used on Facebook Marketplace
I have both..... I would definitely get the Motorguide if you can. The MinnKota doesn't have the jog feature unless you buy the MinnKota puck..... The jog feature is built in to the Motorguide.... and I like the remote, speed levels and wires between the head and base on the Motorguide 1000% more
I have a Minn Kota Terrova on my Native Titan 13.5. I had the 54 inch shaft cut to 38 inches. Still kept my warranty due to having an authorized dealer repair shop cut the shaft for me.
You take that kiss back lol. That is definitely a good option for motorizing. It is not the same performance as a bow mount with remote and spotlock. All depends on what the user wants.
I have modified one and can tell you from experience that it is a pain in the butt. I have the tools, and it was still not an easy job. I would not recommend!!! 10,000 ways to screw it up! This looks like a great option, plus you can't go wrong with a Minn Kota.
What's the weight difference vs the Xi3? That to me has been the big differentiator for the Xi3, it is very light compared with many others out there. I've had nothing but problems with my Xi3 so I'd be keen to see a viable replacement.
Weight is the same as far as I could tell. My MinnKota GPS board went out in less than a year. The MinnKota doesn't have the jog feature unless you buy and install the puck, the wiring gets tangled up easier, and I had to remove the top latch on the MinnKota because it doesn't really make sense on a kayak. The cradle is also very tight and requires more force to deploy even without the locking latch.
Limited quantities, $699 plus you need to own a bow mount already. Which if you don’t have a 36 in shaft bow mount, you would need to cut one down. It’s just more work
couldn't you just put a cheap motor like a newport nv on their stern mount with the nucanoe Bow motor mount plate and an autoboat head from tb nation? Comes in at about $1100.
How would you mount a transom mount motor to the bow mounts plate? Honest question. Also, yes you probably can, we just don’t want to fo any of that work. Some will be comfortable with that, some won’t.
@@aaanglers I'm pretty sure the nucanoe mounting plate ($100) has the same 4 hole pattern as the newport stern mount ($120). Just plop that stern mount on the bow facing the other way so you could mount a $200 Newport kayak series motor on it and install the $700 autoboat head. You get the handheld remote with the autoboat system and it connects to your smartphone where you can plot pre-determined routes. Its not quick connect like the Xi3 but its also not difficult to take a trolling motor off that stern mount. The only extra work is installing the Autoboat head and it looks like the new one they have out is a lot easier to install and do all the wiring. But you guys are right, MinnKota isnt jumping in the kayak game because they are connected to old town. So someone needs to step up and fill that void.

Good thing I bought mines in September when I did. Heard they were discontinuing the xi3 36in shaft so I bit the bullet and bought it.

Keeping in mind, autoboat requires you to already have a trolling motor, and it works better on bow mounts. But agreed on competition, we need it!
I really hope to see a lowrance kayak length recon with that new joystick remote!

😂 we will go as fast as we can. We have ice on the lakes so we can’t do anything on the water. But we might build soon

I can't wait to see more videos on these new options.

This would be a good time for Newport to swing in and make one.
Or add a wireless remote to their current motor
I operate a Haswing Trolling Motor on my Nucanoe F12 They sell the non and gps one
Did yoo cyt it down or deal with the extra length?
@@aaanglers I just left the length
And it doesn’t get in the way if stowed?
@@aaanglers it is a little long but doesn't bother me.

Mariner Sails is a great company to deal with.
Sounds great guys looking forward to seeing it
I can see some cool pully designs in the near future on that for the release.
Ascend trolling motor mount, Minn Kota Endura 30. $250 and I can attach it to any of my 3 kayaks in 5 minutes. KISS 😊

Agreed! DIY is not always the best answer

I’d love to know the weight difference between the motor guide and minnkota
I can’t find that info anywhere, but they feel similar
Can ya rwmove the prop motor and cut the shaft length?
You can. I have heard it isn’t hard. If you do it you lose the factory warranty
Yes, but you lose warranty, and it can be easy to mess it up
Doesn’t Minn Kota make a 36” ulterra?
Not for retail that I’ve seen
Don’t think so, and those are 3k
Where did you see the power pole move for $4200?
Quick search
Sorry, it’s even more expensive
You guys make me wanna buy a Nucanoe 🤔
🤙
The new auto boat is going to do it for me
Well it’s gonna help for sure lol, once you set a motor up
what about the recon motor lowrance?
$3299!? We were looking for more budget options. Under 2k
have you guys considered review 2-pieces kayak!
We can take a look!
Like what?
Why not check out the autoboat?
