WOW! Astonishing. I recorded this from the TV (sound only of course) in the 1960s. NEVER dreamed I would actually SEE it again. A million thanks for posting this gem.

Do you still have the audio recording of this? Is it good sound quality? If so, I would like to hear it -- from a long time WTLS fan.

Hi Stephen! I'm certain I still have the programme, amongst my myriards of audio tapes. Wether it's still playable after 50 years is another matter! I'll search it out.

Peter -- I also have a copy from someone who recorded the audio from the TV broadcast, but unfortunately this is a cassette tape copy from the original reel tape. I also have a Laserdisc issue of the broadcast.

Unbelievable! Just love the way he "sang" along with the wonderful music he created. I can imagine his reaction if turned up for a concert today, only to be told that smoking in the auditorium was forbidden!

Last time I heard Carolina Shout is when I played it myself for fun - probably 10 years ago. Hilarious. I kept wondering - this sounds really familiar.

Il était venu en France dans les années 60, merci de ce souvenir extrordinaire et chaleureux.. Il avait aussi son cigare et bouteille de wisky sur le piano.

I've always been more attracted to the more introverted post-bop stuff, and I think that's pretty typical for most jazz listeners today. But I think we need to open our minds to stride and some of these earlier forms. Smith here is not only entertaining, he's also deep and you can see how thoughtful his playing is. The Jazz 625 Garner video is eye-opening too.

this is 1 million times better than post-bop in my opinion.

I find most post-bop stuff very boring.Sorry to be insulting, but most of it is much too pretentious from my point of view. And from a pianistic standpoint it doesn‘t really get better than the stride pianist in jazz(Tatum included), add a little Powell in there(Bud‘s melodic innovation is unmatched to this day, listen to the winter broadcasts 1953 recordings). You can have all the harmonies you want, most post-bop pianists I hear, play just really uninteresting phrases(Excluding some guys like McCoy, Chick and so forth).

Stride is still a forward style . Bop? Times up.

Read the Lion's book, Music on my Mind. It is a microcosm of early jazz and a compelling read; check out his time in the trenches on the Western Front, where he got his nickname. The Lion was there, at the beginning, along with the giants of jazz piano; Morton, Waller and James P. Carolina Shout here played is a wonderful example of stride piano, played as only the Lion could do.

Apart from the beautiful music, there's a bit of interesting trivia here. "Jazz 625". Why 625? Because television in europe just went from 415 lines to 625 lines ("625i"), so they mention the new high resolution specifically, like we mention 4K today. A few years later it would probably be "Jazz in color" (we got color-tv around 1970 here).

Some of the stride players pound the keys, the Lion has great fluidity and dexterity. Very nice!

je pense plutot que le style "stride" est né vers 1921/1925 avec J P Johnson ,Fats Waller,Willie Smith ,ce qui nous situe entre les deux guerres mondiales
