Hi Ray. I got hold of a Z6 last week to compliment my D500. I own the FTZII adapter and a few F-mount FX lenses (70-200VR II, 50mm F1.4, 85mm AF-D). My other lenses, including most zooms, are DX. I plan to get some Z glass before I move to a Z8. Which wide to standard zoom would you recommend for event-type stills and corporate video as my first Z lens? Until now I took a Nikon body for stills and Sony for video but I am consolidating to Nikon only. I really like your channel, it was instrumental in committing to Nikon for video work!
I don't own it (since I had/have the F-mount 2.8 version) but the 24-70 f/4.0 S is a great little lens. It was the original "kit" lens for the Z6 and for the price it's still popular. I just purchased a Z62 and I have been really enjoying the output and pleasure of handling. I have owned Nikons since 1975 with the purchase of the Nikkormat el. I have never been disappointed. The confirmation bias of this video, yes, I'm enjoying that too.
I'll be the first to admit bias ... in favour of a brand that's enabled my photographic journey from, like you, the first time I used a Nikkormat (a borrowed camera, in 1973). It took me another 7 years to own a Nikon, the FM, but that camera launched my commercial career.
Happy birthday! I'm with you, Raymond... I upgraded from my original Z6 to the Z6II about a year ago, and although I finally received my Z9 about 10 days ago, (Hurrah!) I'm keeping the Z6II, for the reasons you mentioned. And... Last winter, I made a trip out to Knik Glacier, here in Alaska, in the middle of the night, with no moon. There is no "road", per se... only a trail used by local off-roaders, but I wanted to document the trip out. So, I shot all the way there and back, through the windshield of a moving truck on a very bumpy road, using a shutter speed of 1/500th, f/4 and ISO 51,200. There was certainly some noise in those photos, but hey, I got useable photos of the trip! So, aside from the video, it's the low-light capabilities that I really value on the Z6 and Z6II. Take care!
Awesome testimonial! It's been a while since I was in Alaska. First trip in 1976 in a 1959 Chevvy pickup (we got to know a lot of welders over 2 months on the "road"). Cycled through the south in '94, over White Pass ... I think that was the last time, but have travelled in Yukon several times since. Love the north! Soon you won't have to worry about dark for a while.😀
Happy Birthday! Finally we get to see your Z9 in studio use. Terrific job as usual. I too had got the Z6 but as part of the film makers package and I agree its a great low light camera. Happy to report the long awaited Z9 has arrived. Lots too figure out on the new one. I was surprised they don’t offer the WiFi activation mode in i menu like z6. Thanks for acknowledging how good the Z6 remains .
Thanks, Jon! I noticed in putting this together that the Film Makers' Kit seems to have gone up in price ... or perhaps my memory has failed me, which wouldn't be novel. Anyway, it was a good deal. I still haven't bought a gimbal. TBH, I only just checked that WiFi setting and it looks like you're right. So many options I've barely looked at.
Raymond, I have owned the Nikon Z6II for two years. I appreciated hearing your considered opinion on why you continue to keep and use your Zed 6 cameras. For me: Nikon color is superior. I learned how to take action photos using the programmable buttons as taught by Joe Nuzzo ( see his TH-cam videos). I have the optional power grip as, for me, it gives camera balance using the Z24-70 f. 2.8 S lens. Often I shoot Aperture priority and a maximum ISO of 2000. The Z9 seems to more camera than I need and more than I can afford. I now have a iPhone 14 Pro. In certain situations it can match or surpass the Nikon Z6. I think its taking several photos to create a final composite photo is a leap in photography technology land I hope Nikon will implement it in their future cameras. Dan ,
I have Z8 and Z30 but right now I’m seriously considering getting a Z6 as they can be bought for a mere £650 s/h with low ish shot count. Surely a no brainer as a second full frame body.
Happy Birthday, I still love my Z6 and haven't had the need to update it yet. Auto focus was never an issue for me either. I even use an old Helios 44 lens on it. Great video.
My Canon 5D III is over 10 years old and I've loved since day 1. Its full frame sensor still suits me fine for my needs. Will I ever jump on the mirrorless bandwagon? I'm not sure, but I'm not the gearhead you are either. I'm not looking for more megapixels because I like the low noise my camera offers but the dynamic range of the new cameras and video capabilities are quite enviable. It seems like photography is more about editing, codecs and peripherals these days. All of that said, I do enjoy watching your channel to find out where the technology is going.
Digital cameras have been excellent for some time, but definitely mirrorless is the way the whole industry is going, for good reason. I'd like to set the record straight by disavowing my position as a "gearhead." Believe it or not I'm not that interested in gear for gear's sake -- only insofar as choosing the right tools for my work and appreciating well-made tools. I don't buy every new camera that appears -- which is why I didn't "upgrade" to the Z6II -- and, admittedly, the Z9 is overkill for most of what I do today ... but those video specs! For me, photography has always been about editing, which is why I spent so much time in the darkroom over the decades. I controlled my photos from camera, right through to the print, which I still do today. The relatively new adventure for me is video and, yes, that demands a high degree of processing, from colour correction to actual editing and, last but not least, audio -- all endeavours I'm sure I'll never master, but have fun trying.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto I appreciate your knowledge and enthusiasm, Ray! Very much of it is industry not brand related and you make it quite palatable! :D
congratulations ray! i love my z6 from the moment it arrived, i do not plan to buy another camera anytime soon because im still more then happy with its performance and so i still shoot with it often
I bought a used Z6 about 7 months ago, and the funny part is the left audio channel on the internal mic had the same problem. I didn't even notice it for months, but the seller got it repaired under warranty.
Hah! Strange. Maybe a weak point in the system? Glad it got fixed. I still haven't gotten around to sending mine in since I don't use internal audio recording.
Happy 70th birthday, Terrific summary of the status the Z6 in 2022. I just purchased one used to compliment my D850 which I primarily use for wildlife. I’m enjoying the handling and image quality, and, like many, I’m trying to resist the temptation to splurge on a Z9 until Nikon introduce some of the Z9’s autofocus and speed capabilities in a smaller body but it’s not easy. 😂
I hear you, Ivor. Glad you're enjoying your Z6. It's a great little camera! I'd have been happy with a "Z8" if it could have provided the video functions of the Z9. I think everything else could be packed into a smaller body, with an optional battery grip. I have no doubt something like that is in the future. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying the Z9 immensely.
lovely video as usual Ray and a Happy May Bank Holiday Monday to you and 'er in doors... as Arthur Daley would have said... me I'm still hanging out for my second 'final' body in the form of the mythical Z8 as my 'er in doors (albeit it is more like " 'er outdoors" than "in" since her retirement!!) has always been my celestial first!
I totally agree! I got my z6 on December 2020 and I can say that I didn’t have serious autofocus issues with it. The images are very good quality, videos too. I don’t plan to change it anytime soon. It fulfills all my needs. I will just buy some prime lens.
Happy birthday Ray! I would agree, the Z6/Z6ii compliments the Z9 very well. I bought the original Z6 and sold it a couple of years later to finance a great deal I got on a Z7. While the Z7 was a pretty good camera overall, I missed the low light performance of the Z6, and bought a Z6ii. I used a combination of the Z6ii, Z7, and a D500 to cover all of my needs until the Z9 was released. Today I am down to the two bodies, Z6ii and Z9, and I am completely satisfied with the combo.
G'day Ray, Great video you always deliver! your content is so professional, just wondering what you did for a profession in your pass life? Hope you are enjoying the amazing Z9.
😀 Thanks. Jack of all trades, Warren. Bicycle mechanic/sales, cabinet maker, log builder, climbing gear sales, climbing instructor, X-C ski instructor, and 4 decades commercial photography. Not a master of any, but enthusiastic practitioner. Speaking of practice, the Z9 is good challenge.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto how and and what on earth do you do when you build logs!? I am fascinated! 🤣 is this this a house building thing or just lavatorial? 😉 If the latter then I better go amend and update my CV
For a while, in another life (40+ years ago), living in the mountains of southeastern BC, a couple of cohorts and I had a log building company. We built houses and "cabins." I've revisited one of them -- originally built for a larger-than-life hunting guide -- a couple of times in the interim, 20 years apart. Still standing strong and inhabited by the second owners for most of that time.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto New to the channel, Ray. Love the content! Came across it as I'm looking to buy a Z6 soon and attempt to finally dip my foot into freelance photography after many years of it just being a passion, but having many people asking me whether I sell prints and such. I am curious about how you made your transition into photography as a career, as that's something that sounds extremely appealing to me. Is there someplace where you've written about this? Cheers, Johnny (Tofino, BC)
Hi @@johnnyhunter Are you sure you want to go down that rabbit hole? 😀 But, yes, I've written at length -- mostly on my blog -- about my photographic journey, from child enthusiast to commercial photographer. Best bet is to check out my website. I have a " Commercial Work" category with some stories (look in nav bar) and also "Eighties Vancouver," with tags, especially "Point Grey" that covers early days and my first studios. Then "Toronto" tag for another chapter. You can find other mentions in my videos. Try the "Fireside Chats" playlist. Good luck in your journey. raymondparkerphoto.com
Of course it is, in fact now its a far better camera then when it was launched, with firmware updates. I may be planning to partner mine with a Z8 or whatever this year but that will be to complement, not replace my Z6.
Enjoyed your video. I purchased my Z6 with the 24-70 mm f4 in 2020. The 50 f1.8 S was the first prime lens I bought. Very much enjoying it. To me, the autofocus has always been good and has gotten steadily better with updates. With the recent sale Nikon held, I just added the 35 f1.8 S line lens. I am glad Nikon continues to pushing the limits off what they can do with cameras like the Z9. For myself, I am still pretty challenged with the Z6. One day I’ll consider upgrading, for now there are still a LOT of images I need to learn to capture. 🙂
Cheers! A lot of people who push the idea that "it's not about the camera" fail to acknowledge that often a camera can help us "evolve" as photographers.
Happy birthday Ray!!! Life begins at 70! Not that I would know, but just sayin. 😂👍 I love my Z6 too, and Z7. I like comparing them to the purity of the original Nikon F. On paper the F2, F3, etc. were improvements in the spec department, but I'd take a Nikon F any day. The Z6 is low-light and video, and the Z7 landscape. I'm not much of an action photographer, but I'd jump all over something like a compact Z8 sporting Z9 autofocus.
Still have it, still love it, it does all I want it to do, I've adapted to all it's quirks and have no problem with it. Love the glass too, have a Z 50mm 1.8 and I love it, the Z 24-70 f4 and a 100-400 from sigma on a FtZ converter.
I bought a Z6II several months ago as an introduction to the Z system and as a scouting camera. If the Z6 would have an SD slot instead of an SQD I would have bought a Z6 instead of a Z6II. I know, everyone will say that SQD is way better. And I would agree with that. However, I would need an external card reader for that. With SD I just stick the card in my computer, no external card reader needed. Over the years I have never has an SD card failing on me. Anyway, love the Z6II camera and by saying that, I would love the Z6 just as much.
Yeah, I have an SD slot in my MacBook dock (and the soon-to-arrive Mac Studio). But I have a pile of SD cards I have no use for now, other than my audio recorder! 😀 Of course, I'm now investing in CFexpress as well, which are a big expense. th-cam.com/video/N5hzlTcg0Y8/w-d-xo.html And I have 3 readers (one which reads both XQD and SD) Ideally I'd find one reader for all! Glad you're enjoying the Z6II.
Happy Belated Birthday Ray! I always enjoy the content of your videos. I was able to pickup my second Z9 last Saturday, and I have the new 800mm f/6.3S lens on order thru NPS, though I’m not sure I’ll make the purchase when it comes in. I’m not really a wildlife enthusiast though that might change once I’ve had the opportunity to use the 800mm lens. I figured I would try it for 30 days, and return it if I decide it’s not for me. There are a couple of other lenses on the roadmap which are more appealing to me - specifically, the 85mm and 200-600mm lenses - that I’d more likely get more use out of, and will probably be much less expensive. In fact, I could probably get both lenses for less than 800mm lens alone. I recently retired from my day job after 36 years, so I have to be a little more careful with my “discretionary” spending 😉.
I know what you mean. I'm pretty much retired ... only accept jobs I'm interested in in addition to print sales and the Z9 purchase has led to more expense for processing and storage -- this video, shot in 8K, even though edited on 4K timeline taxed this Intel MacBook to its limit.
Cameras don't get bad over time, unless they have a failure. I will not get a new one unless it fails. I also use a D700 and a Canon EOS 5D. They are fantastic as they were when they were introduced 😊. Okay, I know if you are professional you have to keep up, but for an amateur who love to take pictures it will be good for another decade.
Would you recommended a Z6 for hobbyist? I’m considering a used Z6, Z50 or Zfc to upgrade my D3000. I was looking at a used Z6 online but found that Nikon themselves are selling the Z6 with the 24-70 kit for the same price as the body only (~$2000!)
That's a super deal! Since you have used a D3000 it would seem you have some experience with a "real" camera. Let's put it this way: if I was just starting, a Z6 would be a wonderful way to be introduced. I still use both of mine every day.
Here I go again :) But you did ask. :) Until Nikon releases a firmware update that provides audio (beep!) confirmation of roll/cut in video mode, I'll continue to acquire footage of my feet, inadvertently recorded by my error in not actively consulting on every shot I complete the tiny, near-invisible red dot at the top center of the viewfinder. I'll continue to hate on Nikon for refusing to implement this valuable, error-saving, human-friendly feature present on every other video camera I own. Four of them, actually. Otherwise, it's a so-so video camera in my opinion. IQ is okay, media flexibility adequate, usability poor. Does your Z9 provide a confirmation beep on roll/cut? I admit to being a bit of a contrarian. I recently returned my Mac Studio Max because it underperformed my two year old mid-spec Windows machine. Congrats, youngster, on surviving the Big Seven Zero.
Contrarian indeed. But I can relate 😀 You should see (or hear) *me* when technology refuses to submit to my whims! I'm guessing Nikon has heard some complaints re recording confirmation; they've added a bright red box around the LCD in the latest Z9 firmware update, along with leading video options for a hybrid camera. th-cam.com/video/Y3kwaXIF708/w-d-xo.html I'm interested to know what Mac Studio functions underperformed since I'm awaiting delivery of the Ultra.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto I did several tests over two weeks comparing my W10 machine (Ryzen 9 3900X 12 core processor, 64GB RAM) with a Mac Studio Max with 64GB of RAM. I compared timeline scrubbing fluidity in Resolve, rendering output time in Resolve, Render time for a simple 3D animation in Blender and stitching a several images pano in Photoshop CC. On all tests, the Mac was marginally slower than the W10 box. The Mac is a delightful piece of engineering, uses 10% of the power of the W10 machine and is absolutely dead silent. A three-decades Windows user, the Mac was my first ever Apple computer. I experienced difficulty using MacOS due to issues learning and remembering many new commands and workflows. Sorta like driving in NZ - narrow, single lane mountain highways, high speed other traffic contention and everything done opposite to what I'm familiar with. Definitely worth a try for me. I learned lots, returned it without issue to Apple and spent the $3700 on hearing aids. :) I take it that the Z9 does NOT offer audible roll/cut confirmation?
The Z6ii is an alright stills camera but I find myself still reaching for my D850 much more. For the work I've been doing the D850 is more than enough. Z6ii is mostly my video camera and I think that's where it shines.
I can see how you might feel that way as a D850 owner. I had a D800 until I traded it on the Z9, since it had spent the best part of 3 years in the cupboard. I've just become so used to working with mirrorless and prefer sans mirror overall now. Definitely, the Z6 is an excellent video camera, even without an external recorder. Of course, the Z9 takes video and everything else to a new level.
From my perspective, an XQD or CFexpress card is not overly expensive in relation to a $2000 camera, especially when the superior build and performance is accounted for. Videographers and those counting on squeezing every ounce of functionality from the camera aren't counting pennies in this way.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Right. I don't do much video. Many of us are hobbyists and very advanced armatures that occasionally sell our work. Some of these cards' cost per GB are quite high. Not pennies to us.

Thanks, It’s a keeper, for sure!
Nice video Ray. Enjoy those cameras and lenses. Looking forward to more pics and videos although I don’t mind your narratives.
Raymond,
I have owned the Nikon Z6II for two years.
Dan
,
Thanks for adding your thoughts, Dan. Glad to hear you enjoy your Z6II.
Always a pleasure to listen to you Ray. Agree on the Z6 its still a great workhorse.
I have Z8 and Z30 but right now I’m seriously considering getting a Z6 as they can be bought for a mere £650 s/h with low ish shot count. Surely a no brainer as a second full frame body.
Good idea.
Happy Birthday, I still love my Z6 and haven't had the need to update it yet. Auto focus was never an issue for me either. I even use an old Helios 44 lens on it. Great video.
Thanks, Paul! Great to hear.
I have had my Z6 & Z7 for two years and i still love them both. great video
Good to hear!
Yup, contrary to a lot of chatter, it's a great all-rounder.
Priorities!
Thanks Raymond , GREAT video , I am going z way soon from a d610 , all the best from Wimbledon , great day for 🎾
Best of luck!
Happy Belated Birthday !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🥳 🎂🎉
Thanks! But you're 11½ months late. 😀
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Happy EARLY Birthday !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mr. Parker
I totally agree! I got my z6 on December 2020 and I can say that I didn’t have serious autofocus issues with it. The images are very good quality, videos too. I don’t plan to change it anytime soon. It fulfills all my needs. I will just buy some prime lens.
Great to hear!
Thanks Todd. That's a perfect combo for most uses!
Cheers,
Johnny (Tofino, BC)
Hi @@johnnyhunter Are you sure you want to go down that rabbit hole? 😀
But, yes, I've written at length -- mostly on my blog -- about my photographic journey, from child enthusiast to commercial photographer.

Of course it is, in fact now its a far better camera then when it was launched, with firmware updates. I may be planning to partner mine with a Z8 or whatever this year but that will be to complement, not replace my Z6.
In spite of the admittedly click-bait title, exactly the point(s) made in the video.
I love my Z6 too, and Z7.
Thanks, Jeffrey, I'll trust you on that one ... and I'm with you on the fabled Z8.
Still have it, still love it, it does all I want it to do, I've adapted to all it's quirks and have no problem with it. Love the glass too, have a Z 50mm 1.8 and I love it, the Z 24-70 f4 and a 100-400 from sigma on a FtZ converter.
Sounds great!
Quirks like what? Because i ha be the z6 as well
@@Isaypreach like autofocus, i’m always doing it manually with the square clicking ok and searching for the subject. But overall all good!
I own a Z7 II and absolutely love it
I bought a Z6II several months ago as an introduction to the Z system and as a scouting camera.
😀 Of course, I'm now investing in CFexpress as well, which are a big expense.
th-cam.com/video/N5hzlTcg0Y8/w-d-xo.html
And I have 3 readers (one which reads both XQD and SD) Ideally I'd find one reader for all! Glad you're enjoying the Z6II.
You can just plug in the camera directly into the laptop via usb and it will see all pictures and quickly download them
Happy Belated Birthday Ray!
Very true!
Excellent review, thank you! Have you ever had any pictures or footage lost because of a bad card?
Never.
Great video ! Thanks 🙏
My pleasure!
Thank you for the video. By the way, you look really good 😀
Thank you! 😃
I have a question. Why does Nikon z6 write full hd 60 fps footage to Atomos Ninja 5 and not record it as a whole file, but split it into pieces?
Would you recommended a Z6 for hobbyist? I’m considering a used Z6, Z50 or Zfc to upgrade my D3000. I was looking at a used Z6 online but found that Nikon themselves are selling the Z6 with the 24-70 kit for the same price as the body only (~$2000!)
That's a super deal! Since you have used a D3000 it would seem you have some experience with a "real" camera. Let's put it this way: if I was just starting, a Z6 would be a wonderful way to be introduced. I still use both of mine every day.
Raymond Parker, aka Sir Patrick Stewart!’ 😊 😆
Great Review! Take care stay safe, and “Engage!” 😆
You're too kind! But thanks. 😊
great stuff ty
Glad you enjoyed it
Here I go again :) But you did ask. :)
Until Nikon releases a firmware update that provides audio (beep!) confirmation of roll/cut in video mode, I'll continue to acquire footage of my feet, inadvertently recorded by my error in not actively consulting on every shot I complete the tiny, near-invisible red dot at the top center of the viewfinder.
I'm guessing Nikon has heard some complaints re recording confirmation; they've added a bright red box around the LCD in the latest Z9 firmware update, along with leading video options for a hybrid camera. th-cam.com/video/Y3kwaXIF708/w-d-xo.html
I'm interested to know what Mac Studio functions underperformed since I'm awaiting delivery of the Ultra.
I take it that the Z9 does NOT offer audible roll/cut confirmation?
Yes I think so. 🙂👍
Nice video
Thanks
Single card slot, yes. Additionally, Single card slot that takes expensive cards. One should factor that into their decision to own the camera.
Heck yes my Z6 is still good!
the audio is always pretty crappy...
"Zed 6"? Only us Brits are allowed to call it that! 😜
😀 It's the Canadian pronunciation too ... but I'm born and raised in Wednesfield.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Top man - no wonder your videos are always so calm and rational!
