Over the last many many years have vacationed in that part of Virginia and West Virginia several times. It was neat when I recognized all the small towns and roadsides. Ah memories! At 84 I hope to get back there at least one more time. Thanks.
Beautiful country. I’ve driven through Virginia and West Virginia, remember seeing so many scenes like this . Enjoyed this video very much JP! Loved that old gas station! Thanks for a fun drive! ❤️❤️
Absolutely loved, loved, loved this back road Adventure! Between the scenery, the beautiful old houses, the little small towns, it was absolutely breathtaking! Thank you so much for letting me ride along! Looking forward to the next one!💙
JP took us on a road trip! Thanks man! I am from the east coast, NC, and spent lots of time in WV visiting relatives. One time we used a detailed map and went the long way, along the ridge of the mountains of VA, on mostly unpaved roads (90s). One of the most memorable drives of my life.
Youll have to go back with a trailer and pick up that forgotten Ford. A project for you 😅😅 Some lovely old houses there, such a shame going to waste. Lol, the cows. Beautiful landscape. Many thanks for a very enjoyable drive 👍👍😃😃👍👍
Love your video and I love your voice..I have subscribed..just so this old woman can listen to you talk and see the beauty of the scenery..gorgeous gorgeous scenery..
It was very interesting and sad at the same time. It was great to see bits of history and wonder who lived there and what they did. But it's also sad to see these historic sites being reclaimed by nature. Wish you could have gone inside for more exploration, but better safe than sorry as they say. My fav was the Ingalls Overlook. That view was simply amazing, I could sit there for hours (weather permitting of course) 😉. I've been a city/suburban girl all my life, but lately I'm starting to appreciate the mountains and their beauty. I visited Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville about a month ago, persuaded by your video, and the views were amazing! Wish I had the funds to travel and explore more of my world to see more of it's wonders, maybe next year. Hope you enjoyed your chinese food stop, after all it is your fav. 🤣 Thanks so much for taking us along on your journey. Looking forward to the next one and seeing what you are up to in that tiny little state of WV.
Love these backroad finds videos! Some very cool finds and neat looking homes and the views are incredible along with all the gorgeous rivers! The property with the gated farmhouse and barn is one of my favorites and it would be amazing to build a new home there. Another favorite is the home with the big white pillars in the front. It was fun to see the old Ford truck, the old pay phone, and the Main Street Gas garage. The whole video is so interesting, awesome, and really enjoyable JP, and your photos are excellent! Thank you! 💙
@JPVideos81, I just finished the video. Welcome. Welcome to my part of the world lol. I drive 39/219/55/250/220/42/60 in 'circuits' thru Alleghany/Bath/Highland/Pocahontas/Greenbrier/Augusta and Rockbridge counties in VA and WV thru the seasons and years. Amazing vistas and sites, which change with the seasons. I HIGHLY encourage you to return somewhere between Sept 20 and Oct 5th to enjoy the amazing tree change and fall foliage. Have a safe and fun trip!
It looks like at the very end of the video when JP is wrapping things up if you look behind him in the distance is either an old train station or at least an old red caboose. Looks like a great drive.
That tube with the USGS sticker on it is a river gauge of some kind. Some only measure flood stage, and are not in the channel, it appears this one is a flood monitor gauge.
I thought it was for monitoring earthquakes. I have seen a couple of these that has a seismometer locked inside. Then he showed the sticker and u r right about it used to measure floods
Another Excellent video JP, i loved seeing that wide open view of the mountains. It was beautiful to see that, and i liked that old red General Store. 👍👍👍👍👍
It's a lovely video, Jay, very enjoyable, easy paced, and who doesn't like small town America, always well recorded and edited. Thank you . We are eager to see more. Central California 👀
I lived in the Shenandoah Valley for quite a few years. The red place may have been a school house at one time. Deerfield used to have a railroad branch coming into town. C&O I think. It also had a radio station. The cows are smarter than many of the residents, especially in West Augusta. If I remember... West Augusta was a mecca for drugs in Augusta County. Monterey was a cool little town. There was an old hotel on the main street. The Homestead Hotel is a famous old resort in that neighborhood, Bath County. Railroad used to service that too. If I remember Route 39 is a state route which is in both VA and WV. Usually only US Route are the same. You may have need on U.S. Route 219, when you were there. I've stayed in Marlinton from time to time. The Marlinton Motor Lodge had a decent bar, when I was there some years back.
Had to do a double take when you got to the Mountain View store, and then another when you stopped at the red building around 9:30. My family owns a cabin literally just through the woods behind there. What a coincidence this video got recommended to me. Don’t know the story behind those two buildings. The red one has always been more or less abandoned, but it used to be someone kept the grass cut around it. The other one, I seem to remember that one being occupied more recently, but it’s still been some time. Yes, there is zero cell service, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon, which is why I was surprised the pay phone didn’t work. The local phone company (MGW) does offer fiber internet, amazingly enough, so you’re not completely in the Stone Age. Definitely recommend staying out there until nightfall if the skies are clear, the stars are absolutely, utterly amazing. The cow pasture, bull pasture, and calf pasture rivers are gonna be a *lot* cleaner than bodies of water closer to the ocean. Cold water, but lovely to swim in once you get used to the temperature.
I'm from VA too and I think the whole state has a lot to see. There are a lot abandoned houses in the state and wonderful scenes of which to take photos.
Awesome finds! Anything related to th 2 Virginias makes me always think of The Walton's. It's a fave tv show of mine, as I grew up on a diary farm. Maybe is a good idea to keep a pair of sox long sleeved shirt and jeans in the vehicle for times like these. God Bless🙏🙏🌺
Awesome trip JP! Awesome finds along the way! The old Ford truck is a 1959, I had one just like it only mine was white with grey primer! Thanks for bringing us along for the trip!👍
I have traveled all over the US, and I lived in WVa for a while, and the scenery is just so beautiful there. You're making this lady very happy. I can't wait for next video, brings back so many great memories
Hmmm...are you going to Cass Railroad? That's a neat place to visit. I tried following along on Google Earth. I loved the video. Beautiful scenery! Valleys in between rolling mountains. Probably my favorite kind of scenery.
Loved the trip and all of the roadside finds. The gated property is still being used. It does look like it's been grazed and it would be very overgrown if it wasn't being used for something. There is equipment in the barn and if you notice there are gates across all of the openings of the barn which means they want to keep the cows or whatever out of the barn. The 2nd big house had a nice porch on it at one time. I actually liked that one more than the first one but I'm just an old country girl. Would have been cool to see the insides of both of those houses but it wouldn't have been a good idea to test the no trespassing boundaries. Can't wait to see your other videos of your trip.
I’ve found that if you travel the backroads, in the south anyway , you find all kinds of abandoned homes vehicles of all kinds. You'd have a good time down here. You made some interesting finds Jay.😊
seeing mountains and stuff like this is so awesome im from florida been here my hole life i have been to pine mountain in GA once and man that was beautiful you should bring your nikon with you on your travels
I just found your channel. I look forward to watching a lot more videos. Several years ago some friends and I used to take day trips and explore places like are shown in your video. I have taken some great photos of my excursions and I would not trade my memories of these places and my friends for anything!!
Here in southern WV coal camps would put up buildings like that for single miners. I don't think that part of Virginia is in the coal field so not sure why there would be a little duplex cabin like that.
Hi I enjoyed the video, the old houses were cool to bad you could not go in I would have liked to see the inside. The still shots were awesome. Thank you for sharing...😊
As a rule of thumb 👍 if the owners don't care about mowing the grass then they don't care about the property! #wisdom #commonsense Plus those signs were put up probably 20 years ago 🙄 whenever the folks abandoned it! No ones around just go exploring without fear bro! Its out in the country & literally no ones there! Its like booking a flight ✈️ to Paris, France 🇫🇷 then riding around the city in a taxi 🚕 🚖 then going back to the airport 🛫 & leaving! 😂 Other than that loved the video 📹 ❤️!
Loved riding thru the beautiiful countryside of both states ..Fell in love vvith Va. years ago vvhen my sister lived there and have missed seeing the gorgeous mountain.vievvs and old homes like the ones you shared vvith us ..loved everything about this adventure ..So glad you didn't venture into the tall grass ..could have ruined your entire trip ..Can't choose a favorite ...loved it all ..LOL..👍💙
The Pickup is 1960s and not to nit pick but I believe this is West Virginia. The people living there would point it out but, at one time it was all Virginia. No matter it's a pretty area but, a very poor area. The Mountains are very beautiful. I would speculate these grander homes were possibly at one time a plantation.
Wow that was very nice beautiful old farm houses and old stores just dont see that anymore its nice to see somone who can keep an old store running in a very small town indeed yes it would be awful if you broke down and had no phone service and walking for a mile or two to near by house would be awful then you got to hope and pray they have a land line phone 📱 what some amazing places and finds j.p...

JP, please be careful.I used to live in places like that. There are Water. Wells wells that we're made of just playing. I am curious as to what vehicle you are driving for this travel. You may have said but if you did, I missed it. Do you carry your bike along too or is this basically vehicle views? I think these back-woods trips are my favorites...never know what we might see! I have to say I have 2 favorite houses......the red one that could have been a home/business and the one that had the 2 front doors and 2 windows! Thanks for the ride-a-long. Awesome video.

I’m in close distance to West Virginia….it is literally God’s country with all the lush greenery and mountains. But a good bit of it is dirt poor with little industry to speak of.
Your family must have loved all these stops and exploring on the way. If you knew what I know about wv you wouldn't be putting your family at risk like that

Yikes! Undo the overgrowth. Mow, mow, mow! That kind of plant growth is terribly dense. It spreads vines and other truly obnoxious plants you don't want. Such a quaint scenic area. Sad about the automobiles just left there. Keep on exploring, recording this stuff. Maybe get permission to video much closer, even inside some of these old houses? What was your favorite find?

I really enjoyed this video. We love going for rides just looking for odd things. Thanks for taking us on a trip tonight. Have a great weekend 🤗
It was a beautiful backroads drive and I was glad to share these awesome finds.
Enjoy your time in Pocahontas County, WV. I'm from there. If you want a place that gives you the creeps ask the locals about Lobelia.
Ayyyyyye, I’m from Va and we have some wild treasures for explorers around Fredericksburg.
Yes we do! I’m a Fredericksburg girl myself ❤😊
Yall wanna down to go exploring? I’m 40 mins out from Fredericksburg
Lynchburg Virginia here!!
Love FBX I have a lot of cousins that live there
Really loved the beautiful scenery in Va & w. Va!

At least that long for me😎
What beautiful country and yes if walls could talk I would love to hear all the story's they could tell!

Tons of great finds. I couldn’t believe the number of abandoned places on this drive. WV and VA are beautiful places to drive through for sure!

Hi JP from West Virginia 👋
Hi 👋
Really enjoyed the road trip, hope there's more to come.
That little cabin you came across with the two front doors might have been two dwellings. Shared fireplace. I have seen similar cabins like that
Must be just one room each being that small, but would be a cozy place.
Here in southern WV coal camps would put up buildings like that for single miners. I don't think that part of Virginia is in the coal field so not sure why there would be a little duplex cabin like that.
God I loved all of this !! Your pictures are amazing it's so pretty there !! This was awesome I loved everything!! Great video always!!👍👍

enjoyed the whole video, I liked the old homes which sure seem abandoned .the old ford pickup was cool . wish I could find one like that ...take care Jay
Thanks for coming along
You always did have a way of finding those unusual finds, Jay, lol.
That I do
Wow, the views' on the road and off. It seems' you can just reach up and pull those clouds' down.
postcard worthy
JP, please be careful.I used to live in places like that. There are Water.
Wells wells that we're made of just playing. Wood boards have rotted and all there is are the hole in the ground and hopefully. You don't fall in one hopefully they have covered them up.Please be careful where you are walking and also should take a stick with you.
And poke the ground to make sure it is solid in front of you
The culvert thing is a stream gauge station to measure the water level of the stream. The antenna reports the level remotely. The gauge with 5 feet is a measure of hieght above some base elevation above sea level, not actual water depth.
Thanks for clarifying that
Is the tube, with the sensors and telemetry equipment inside, made that tall because it is in a flood plain area. Where the water level could rise above the road ?
Could be, not sure. @@MichaelOnTheEdge

The corragted pipe contains instruments to measure water level , velocity for early flood warning/ monitoring.
Ty for sharing that. Never came upon one of those before.
The Ford pickup is between a 1957 to a 1960. They all had the same body, just different trim over those 3 years. My big brother had a 58 with a 460 engine. It was fast, but had armstrong steering
Would love to see the inside of the 2 story house, Just VErRY smart, with the signs, No Way....
Those Tube's you was looking at have something to do with either Water or Sewer and your right there are pumps down at the bottom. The thing you called a Antenna is actually a Hoist to remove an replace the Pumps. It could be a lift station for sewer water.

all of it thanks

I’m in close distance to West Virginia….it is literally God’s country with all the lush greenery and mountains. But a good bit of it is dirt poor with little industry to speak of.
I think that's true in lots of places, but nothing can take away the beauty of the state.
My family actually lived in the big house you said was in McDowell! It's actually in bath county.
😯
Love the ford
That truck is 1957 to 1960 f100
Hi jp I like old houses life behind 🛻🏠
I went to the web site at 30:38 and the measurements include water level, flow rate, and temperature.
That picks up is from the 60s
With you living in pa have you ever seen the largest tea pot in Chester west Virginia Hancock county
I haven't
Ser you should do a trip to North Carolina jp ser
Red structure minute 10 may be school house
Did you go to Hot Springs in Bath County? The Homestead is there and the town is way different then the surrounding area
I did see signs for it, but didn't get there.
you have never seen a river level measuing shack? a lookout tower in a valley by a river?
28:33 ok what is this??? Water Science Center. Okay. Something probably for water quality testing and measuring maybe?
It'a deep well
its hilarious listening to you talk about what you would do to these pieces of scrap (trucks) you find. soo out of reach.
i will claim the truck
Your family must have loved all these stops and exploring on the way. If you knew what I know about wv you wouldn't be putting your family at risk like that
