Thanks for your reaction. I cannot get enough of Big Mama. Incredible talents that exude sheer joy in singing together. Check out their ‘it’s live' performances, especially 'love alone.' Also, highly recommend the ODG video where Lee Young Hyun (the third singer in this vid) singing her solo song 'forsake' to young students that don’t know she’s a famous master singer in a Karaoke -type setting. Truly amazing performance and awesome song.
The leader is Shin Yeona (50) who recently got promoted to Dean status at Howon University. She was previously the Head of the Kpop department and 2 of her students are in the group BTOB. LEE, JiYoung (46), LEE, Young Hyun (44) wrote & composed the solo "Resignation" which derived from personal experience in college. It was one of their biggest hits and is the #1 song sang in karaoke bars today. Most people don't know she wrote that song! She is the most active amongst the other professors. PARK, Min-Hye (43) is the maknae, youngest of the group. She and LYH sings lots of duets in shows & programs. They are the OG of YG entertainment. They are known for the vocals; hence the name Big Mama (big voices). They didn't fit into the stereotypical skin frame girls/dancers back in the day. They started in 2003, disbanded in 2012 due to poor management and reunited in 2021 when they appeared here in Killing Voice. They just celebrated their 20 years in December 2023 with a 3-day concert. Your bias LYH gave birth last year May (2023) so they were on hiatus then and have some songs out. 빅마마가 결성된 배경에 대한 이야기들을 조금 해보자면, 당시의 걸그룹들이 예쁘지만 일부 멤버들은 가창력 논란이 있어서 이걸 안타까워한 한 작곡가 그룹이 우리나라에도 정말 노래 잘하는 사람들로만 이뤄진 걸그룹을 만들어보자는 공감대가 형성되었다고 합니다.
그래서 아직 데뷔 안한 사람들 중에 왼쪽의 신연아를 중심으로 가창력이 뛰어나다 소문난 사람들을 모으게 되었고, 그렇게 결성된 그룹이 빅마마가 되었습니다.
사실 빅마마가 데뷔할 때 멤버들의 노래 실력은 매우 뛰어났지만, 그들이 좀 살이 많이 찐 편이었기에 날씬하고 예쁜 다른 걸그룹들과 경쟁할 수 있을까 하는 우려가 있었지만, 데뷔곡 break away 한 곡으로 큰 반향을 일으키고 사람들을 매료시켰습니다.
외모와 상관없이 노래 잘하면 사람들이 좋아한다는 걸 보여준 사례였죠.
빅마마라는 그룹명도 그들의 외모로 인해 소속사 사장이 지었다고 하는데 4번째에 있는 가장 어린 박민혜는 당시 그룹명을 듣고 상처받아 울음을 터트리기도 했었답니다.
3번째에 있는 이영현은 현재 우리나라에서 가장 노래를 잘 부르는 여자 가수 4명 중 한 명으로 불리며, 빅마마 해체 후 개별적인 활동 중 '나는 가수다' 라는 아주 인기 많았던 tv show에 출연해 큰 관심을 받았지만 그로 인해 극심한 무대 공포증을 겪어 활동을 중단한 적도 있었습니다.
하지만 빅마마 재결성 이후에는 마음의 안정을 찾고 지금은 꾸준히 활동중입니다.
제가 알기로는 4명 다 결혼은 했지만 신연아는 아이가 없고 나머지 세 명은 아이들 엄마라고 알고 있습니다.
4명 모두 실용음학과 학과장이나 교수를 역임하고 있어 일명 교수돌이라고 불리기도 합니다.
추가로 위에서 이야기한 가장 노래를 잘하는 여자 가수 4명 중 3명이 함께 발표한 프로젝트 앨범이 12~3년 전 쯤에 발매된 적 있는데 diva project 'mermaid'를 검색하면 보실 수 있습니다.
영상 중간에 초고음 애드립 구간이 시작되는 약 4~5초 가량은 이영현이 부른 부분인데 영상편집이 잘못되어 소향이 부른 것처럼 잘못 나와서 아쉬운 부분입니다.

Your favorite is ‘Lee Young-hyeon’. There are four female singers in Korea who are considered to be at the peak of their singing skills. They call them ‘divas’. This is one of them.

Great video. This is the group I listened too before mamamoo to get the vocals. back then it is BoA and some others but big mama is not a kpop group they are a vocal group. The story here is they disbanded in 2012, it was 2 long years before Mamamoo and 2014. All 4 went their own way, a couple of them to universities, though one of them was involved with a couple of the BTOB members and BTOB is just as good as Mamamoo and Big Mama for vocal talent. When this Dingo came out it was sort of for the students being taught, sort of a get back together to show the students they have that yeah they can still do it, do what they do etc... but they also reformed the group and the last song was in fact a brand new song released in 2022. They have said more will come. They also have another common experience with mamamoo, on appearance. For mamamoo they were told your ugly become the best vocalists. Big Mama were told a similar thing, not so pretty and were contractually barred from any sort of appearance enhancement(plastic surgery was very common back then) they were told they want the audiences to be focused on their vocals not appearance. So yeah even back then jackasses were being morons with women's appearances and clearly did not change by the time mamamoo came on the scene and basically forced the industry to reduce that stuff. Big Mama is definitely up with the best of the best vocal groups in the world, along with BTOB, Mamamoo and some others. On the plus side, groups and singers who have the extreme vocal talent like this can be around for decades, other talents may decline with age but vocals usually improve.

Amazing reaction, I had the same reaction when I watched their Killing Voice for the first time, completely changed my life.
One of the thing that the comment section had not mentioned yet was that Young Hyun (your bias, the third lady) developed severe stage fright around 2016, it was so bad to the point that she couldn't sing in front of people anymore and disappeared from the industry for 4 years. She was able to come back to sing again after fighting really hard and slowly regaining her self confidence through singing in the karaoke. However, till this day she still struggle a lot when she has to perform in front of a small crowd.
