Great video Dave. I carry a few coffee filters in my pack. Can be used to assist in filtration, tinder and makeshift toilet paper or napkins if needed. I also have carried fish tank filters. The kind that open like a pouch that hold the charcoal packs. Makes a filter bag of sorts.
Dave the Barber... That was a good come back... I didn't know any of this. I think I've heard people talk about this system, but had never seen one. Thanks for showing it!
Dave, as always I truly appreciate your videos and the work you put into them to get the points across as to how to do them properly. I've followed you for a long time now, since the beginning of the dual survival show that should have kept for another few seasons. Before I get on a tangent, I do appreciate the hard work you put in for your viewers.
Steve Smith, those bandanas are available on Dave's website. Link is in his description. Excellent site, I've purchased many items from them. Excellent customer service as well.
I've done a similar setup with a 2 liter plastic bottle. cut the bottom out, turn it upside down then go, from the bottom, pebbles, sand, charcoal, and spagna moss. Spagna moss does have some antiseptic properties, but you should boil to.
Dave, your stuff is consistently the best. I've been a west coast survivalist for 30 years but I still have questions and I always turn to you for the answers. I've trained with the late Ron Hood, and have great respect for Tom Brown and Myke Hawke, and you. There's few things more profound in life than sharing empowering knowledge. Thanks!
I always carry the sawyer gravitational water purifier n the steripen uv purifier. My family n i have drank from swamps rivers n streams using this system. But i also carry the materials for primitive filtration n purification. Thank u dave for sharing ur knowledge.
When I was a kid some friends and I were playing war in the woods. We had ran out of water in our canteens and found a little creek that looked as though the water was clean. We filled up and kept on drinking. Needless to say for the next few weeks all three of us were sick as dogs with uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea. The sickest I've ever been in my life! Def learned a lesson the hard way, LOL. So folks pay close attention to these vids...it's no joke at all!!
I've been grinding charcoal really fine. I like to see the difference between the ideal and emergency situations. I almost didn't watch this one. But, I'm glad I did.
This is important to me, since I live in an area that gets 66 inches of annual rainfall and 168 days of measurable precipitation per year. Fire isn't always an option, and neither is boiling water. Thanks Dave.
Thanks for the reply Brother....Tentsmiths has close to what I am looking for in a canvas/oilskin tarp. I just prefer a tarp to a tent because of the versatility and options the tarp gives me and dont mind the extra weight of the canvas because of it's durability.
Kraven-- Dave has stated in a couple of vids, the straw filters are disposable, single event filters. They are good for 50 gallons. Use them in an emergency then toss them and get another.
Another great one Dave. I've saved up the cash and plan on heading down from Cleveland for your basic survival class next month. I'm really looking forward to it.
Great video. Another way to possibly get your three tiers would be nestled perforated cans..such as soda can, soup can, coffee can. Like you said, this isn't fool-proof, but much better than nothing.
would you think there may be a benefit, like on long treks, to collect some of your charcoal from fires you build along the way, for emergencies? great video Dave, thanks so much. I've started back from square one and am trying to catch up on all your videos. There's a lot, but I work from home, so I just keep the playlists running! thanks for all you do!
Something I never understood... I don't understand why people don't just carry a good cheese-cloth. It's just the as a bandana only it filters everything bigger than 50nm. You can get Spirulina cloth that is high quality and filters everything down to 30nm. The only thing smaller than that is polio but pretty much anything else will be filtered. You still need a pre-filter for the dirt, like you showed but it's a great thing to carry... I think I'll just make a video on it!
Dave if you were in da U.P. and on some lakes that were river and spring feed. If the water was clear enough to see the bottom at least 6 foot down. Would you filter, boil, neither or both? Go 43.
LOL I can tell it is getting cooler there. You are going to wear your video camera out with making a lot of these great videos like you are doing. Good video! Thanks!
dave couple questions....would layer of gravel help...not too much sand where im from and spagnum moss ..doesn't it have iodine in it if so wouldn't help disenfect
Highly informative. I would think that you'd want to use this in conjunction with the iodine or chlorine tablets, as particulate matter can lessen their effectiveness.
Dave, I live about 6 miles (as the crow flies) from the Ohio River (Cincinnati suburb). What do you know about how contaminated is that water? Using the techniques you have taught (or berkey-system filter which I have) could I clean up Ohio River water enough for if SHTF? I know how to kill pathogens but the chemical pollutants might be hard to deal with, PCBs and whatnot. Can you advise? And would you eat the fish or are they poisoned also? Thanks!
Great Video about water filteration.. Good to know in case of the extremes... Very informative and i like your videos very much.. makes a lot of sense.. Good job..
Hey Dave what metal do you recommend for a water bottle aluminum, stainless steel or titanium please reply if you have the time because i am thinking of buy a bottle and this bottle will be my primary bottle and form your videos i learned that your primary bottle has to be metal for boiling purposes. thanks, Eric
Dave: in this given Mod / Simulation, if I catch rain water straight from the tarp. would it be O.K. to just boil and drink? Or would you suggest other steps prior to boiling? Thank you for the video and everything you do Dave. johnny in Texas
I was wondering is a little of topic but what do you think of flint knifes they can be as sharp as steel knifes and if need can be used to start a fire or you can brake them down to an arrow head after all it is flint.
Great video, Dave. If the water is clear, could you boil the water first and then use the Lifestraw second, or do you need to filter before boiling? Thanks! P.S. the Scout knife is awesome!
Egyptian wells help with the removal of chemical's before you start the filtering process. Were I live there some spots you can drink water right from the ground & there are some spots that are heavy with chemical pollutants. There are also different bug species to look for that are good indicates of chemical pollutants free water... lolz I don't know the name of them though.. Only what they look like.
Dave are the coals left from a fire the same as standard charcoal? I would have thought charcoal would have to be made like "char-cloth" in a sealed container and heated not burned. I realize this is an emergency technique, but have always wondered about charcoal. This video seemed to be a good intro to the question. Thanks for all.
Dave, don't know I you got the reply on this from yesterday, but look into the Livesaver bottle. Seems to get damn near everything (including viruses & some heavy metals- maybe even chemicals)! Very simple, works for 1000s of liters of water & you can replace the filters. It's pricey, but maybe it's a good one-shot expense to make (about $150). It seems you can just fill it, pump it & drink it. P.S.- What do you think of coffee filters for the kind of filter in this video?
Dave I seen a thing online where someone used a new lamp wick and stuck it in a container of murky water and then put the other end in another container below that one to catch the filtered water. "I use that term loosely" I am thinking this is mainly to make the water just more clear whats your take on it? also could charing the end(s) of the wick help it any?
So Dave, do I understand that this would be for suspected chemical or heavy metal contamination and when water is turbid BUT still plan on boiling.... if at all possible, to avoid micro-organisms? I guess it would be the very rare occasion indeed.
Hey Dave, first loving all your vids keep up the good work. I was wondering though, couldn't you just layer all of the filtering elements in one bandana?
Hey Dave, if you couldn't get hold of sand for the fine filter tier, what could you use as a suitable substitute? Thanks for all the hard work you put into your videos.
Hey Dave how do you keep track of how much water youve sucked through your survival straw filters? Any methods that you use or is it a guessing game? Always enjoy your vids.
Dave, do you know what they called the tabs to put in canteens in Nam.I am getting old and I forgot the name.It had a bad taste but I used them cause I could hear the ones who didn't.See Ya
I understand that this is emergency procedure, but why do you not carry a British Military Milbank bag filter? this would eliminate the first and third levels of the three tier system.
Can anyone with an iPhone tell me why the thumbs up thumbs down won't work on my TH-cam app I have an iPhone5 it works if I'm TH-cam in Safari but not if I'm in my app and worked fine before I out ios7 on, it sucks cause I like to give my subscriptions good feedback
Great video Dave. I carry a few coffee filters in my pack. Can be used to assist in filtration, tinder and makeshift toilet paper or napkins if needed. I also have carried fish tank filters. The kind that open like a pouch that hold the charcoal packs. Makes a filter bag of sorts.

this video and the last about water filtering and decontamination are two of the most helpful videos that I've seen thanks again for sharing
I am so very much enjoying this series. It is Dave at his finest!

Im really enjoying this back to basics survival series. If I ever get the money up im taking a class

Dave, that was an awesome bushcraft set-up!
Very cool
I remember the video you did a long time ago when you made the same filter using an old two liter bottle.
Thanks for the great video

Dave can you make a video on how you would disinfect your water when your on the move? With the kit you'd normally carry. Thanks
Thanks for the video Dave, very helpful.
🙏🏻
would 3 canvas or cotton bags similar to the one you made for your bush pot work for this application??
I liked the filter you made from a 2 liter bottle, this seems overly elaborate or cumbersome.
Sand before the charcoal. Sand may have bacteria in it. Just a thought.
Just taught the same 3 tier filter this pass weekend, near Red River Gorge Ky. Nice Video Dave!

Do you have an opinion on the British army millbank bag? Seems like a good piece of kit for water collection and to provide some filtering.

great stuff as always!! thinking about pvc piping as a system.
Would it be safe to rinse out the contaminated bottle with clean water or even soap? Cheers.

collect run off water from your shelter ... stay dry and get water...
Truly awesome Dave! THX!
hey dave like the new hat
Dave the water source looks like a lot of streams here in Ne PA from around mining sites. Is there any artisan wells on your school site?
Dave, do you know what they called the tabs to put in canteens in Nam.I am getting old and I forgot the name.It had a bad taste but I used them cause I could hear the ones who didn't.See Ya
Sweet information 👍
you are starting to look like Jeff Daniels in one those Civil War movies. I like Jeff Daniels' movies
Will moss work well in the first tier? I have a lot of it in my area and would like to make a semi permanent filter to filter my stream water.
Just a thought the sand or media could have heavy metals use the charcoal last
great vids bro
Mac
thx for the info! what r your thoughts on a uv system?
Nice system.
Thx Dave. Any thoughts on a uv system?
Dave your the best!
where can I get a few of those bandanas??
is powdered charcoal better than chunked?
Dave is there any 5 stage filtering system like Zero water for survival packs?
great video thank you
Great video Thanks
Dave. Do you think that it would be worth taking the already filtered water and repeating the process with it several times?
Nice Demo.
Nice vid !!!!!
Nice
I understand that this is emergency procedure, but why do you not carry a British Military Milbank bag filter? this would eliminate the first and third levels of the three tier system.
Hey dave, how come the 2Q Camp Pots are unavailable on your site? I can't find one for the life of me.
what do you edit your videos with?
Are awesome*
i got to pee now
