The justice system is designed to limit wrongful conviction, even at the price of letting guilty people go, because the founders understood there are few things worse than punishing an innocent person. It's a system that is far from perfect, but there are certainly worse, ie. ones that don't care about punishing the innocent if it means more convictions.
