  • This story is from a Call Of Cthulhu game I played. The players are hired out to track down a missing person. The trail leads them to a town out in Alaska and are shocked when they discover that most of the homes are filled with skeletons.

    Let's see here:
    Didn't immediately leave to get help when they found the first skeletons.
    Didn't check the ceiling even though it was pointed out several times that the crazed survivor did nothing but stare at it.
    didn't bring the dogs inside with them, leaving them separated from their only transport.
    SPLIT THE F***ING PARTY!!!
    Good Lord, it's a wonder that the session didn't end up with a TPK.

    As someone, who had dm'ed Call of Cthulhu, I really appreciate the depth of this story, as it pretty much was told in a smooth atmospheric way, while staying true to the setting.
    I don't want to imagine how it must have felt for the players to endure this night + all the previous encounters at the village. Sanitywise and lifewise this already sounds like a nightmare most players wouldn't survive.
    Therefore quite a cool mystery plot - I know that there are mostly D&D sessions on the channel, which is why I watched most of the videos so far, but I wouldn't mind more stories like this one in a similiar style. I love how you kept it to the TH-cam audience as thrilling as it probably was during the session itself.

    • @nrais76
      @nrais76 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@CantusTropus advice from the fifth edition, if I recall, is that in most adventures, most investigators will die. Now they don't have to, and if they are clever, they won't necessarily, it's certainly not a requirement, and if you actually don't want them all dead or permanently insane there are ways of making that happen. Then again, not everything in an ongoing campaign is going to involve directly interacting with the Mythos. My players go in expecting to die or be driven permanently insane, and actually tend to be disappointed if they're not. Makes it hard to plan for some of the larger arcs like Masks of Nyarlathotep or Beyond the Mountains of Madness. I might try Achtung Cthulhu some time.

Copper prices tanked after WW1 so it would have made the town a lot less valuable economically. Figures without a railroad there is no Copperton as it stands. As an update, I've used this with DnD instead of CoC. And after putting it in with the different side quests I had developed my players have decided to visit the mining town of Copperton in search of a noble lord's mage who went there on a research trip. Little do they know, the miners of the town accidentally uncovered a place deep beneath the world where the Shadowfell bleeds into the material plane and all sorts of planar abominations have slipped through.
      For any DMs interested I'm using this as an opportunity to use some of the sorrowsworn from MToF, a Nothic, a Balhannoth (for extra mind fuckery) and an Obilex (A miner who was transformed by the energies but still believes he's human).

    native American history sounds like one of those majors that didn't exist in 1923

      Well, maybe if all the people studying it would stop getting locked in mines and stabbed through the eyes it would be more popular.

      Religious Anthropology very much did exist back then, and there was actually something of a rush to record as much information about indigenous religion as possible before the old traditions died completely, like in How Natives Think.

      Anthropology as a science exists in part due to the desire to study Native American culture while the people who still remember it were alive.

      Call of Cthulhu I one of the games where I tend not to penalize players who refuse to follow the obvious plot threads. Don't get me wrong, I don't try to railroad anybody, it just that I've had players obstinantly refuse to actually do any adventuring, run away to Canada when the villains showed up in a superhero game, etc., and yet still insist on being entertained by me, taking my time and attention away from the rest of the party who actually wanted to ROLEPLAY. In Call of Cthulhu, especially if sanity and supplies are running low, I consider it fair to run for your lives. The things chasing you will still haunt your nightmares, there are always other cases, and maybe I make some subtle (or unsubtle) changes to the bits you haven't seen yet, the things follow you, or it's a different thing than I had originally planned, or while escaping you attracted the attention of something worse, etc. I can always roll with it, or juat let you escape and call the session early...and then next time maybe these characters won't be so lucky....
