The V-6 is not right by Jesus - The Carmudgeon Show - Ep. 1

  • The V-6 engine is more complicated and expensive to build than a straight-six, but far less refined. It exists only as a solution to a packaging problem - it’s not the kind of powerplant that engineers actually want to build. So why do we lust after the Alfa Romeo Busso V-6?
    ==
    The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.
    Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on TH-cam alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile - and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.
    Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering - which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.

    Busso V6 is one of the best engines ever made. V6 or otherwise. The way it sounds revs and looks is just magic. Why I bought my 155 2.5 V6. Jason himself drove it at Radwood Philly...said he loved the engine. Love this show btw. Keep it up!

    • @ChaosphereIX
      @ChaosphereIX 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@99Lezard99 The way it sounds, the way it revs seemingly with so much...Italian-ness and zeal. The way the power smoothly builds. The induction noise is intoxicating, and the exhaust, when done right, is just magic. The way it looks in the engine bay. The fact that it is reliable. I could go on. I did one pull in 2nd in my car when I was shopping for it, and I was done.

      @@ChaosphereIX fair play. there are many busso v6 arent there? they where made into the 2000s right? they cant feel all the same and sound the same since carb/injection, different cams valves and strokes.
      im a fan of the original nsx. i think the 2 v6's from it must be one of the best v6s there are. they also sound great, they live under your toes, they rev they respond extremly well and they build power nice with the slight vtec kick and after that they become like a fully build race engine. the 5 speed gearbox from the pre facelift nsx just wasnt the best choice. geared too long. but the 6 speed from 97 onwards was blissful and fitted perfect to the wonderful c32b engine. sadly honda only made it for the pretty expensive nsx only.

    • @ChaosphereIX
      @ChaosphereIX 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@99Lezard99 Yes it was a mass produced engine for Alfa Romeo. Used since the late 70s, it underwent many changes. Ranging from a 2.0T to 3.7L (in Autodelta form), and with different fuel and cams etc. The best are the 12v ones IMO, and the 2.5 zings more than the 3.0. Although the 3.0 in the SZ screams.
      Yeah the Honda NSX sounds good too, I will agree with that.

      Entirely because of the trick exhaust. In fact all modern cars require fancy exhausts because the engines have sooo much sound proofing. You never hear proper engine notes anymore, only exhaust notes (and yes, they are two completely different things).

      I've had an Audi 4000cs quattro and a '93 S4 -- both powered by 5-cylinder motors. I'm currently driving a 2004 Volvo S60R -- yet another 5-cylinder. That warble, the exhaust thrum.. There really just isn't much quite like it (especially when boosted like crazy)... Under ideal conditions, it can evoke images of Group B cars ripping through a forest, all sorts of exhaust screams and chuffs and whistles..
      What's arguably even better is when you simply double the cylinder count, as in the R8/Gallardo/Huracan... Ahhh... Simply sublime

Incredible and completely betrayed by a complete lack of horsepower - the acceleration of sap in January.

  • @Roddy451
    @Roddy451 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Alfa Romeo's 6C V6 (Busso) was a pretty strong engine, but not exactly reliable. There were issues with some productions that used a two-piece cylinder head gasket. I can also mention, the timing belt tensioner that leaks (there is a fix for that), you had to keep the exhaust valves properly calibrated, lest you wanted to ruin the cam lobes, valve train cover gasket leaks, and the water pump was a hit or miss. As a former Alfa mechanic, I know quite a bit. Yes, I still love them! I would consider purchasing a Milano Verdi Quadrifoglio.
    The engine sound was a great combination of both the intake design, valve train, and the exhaust. I've yet to hear a V6 that sounds better than AR's. The 3.0 liter makes power all the way up to the redline.
    You guys did not mention that a V6 engine allows for the possibility of making the car a front mid-engine configuration, for a lower polar moment of inertia. It is fairly easy to keep the engine, even with accessories, behind the front axle.

    A long time gifted and known Alfa and exotic mechanic preferred the 2.5 above all other versions. Not just the sound, but the inherent balance of the engine. I have never had a chance to hear a carb’ed Busso in person. A stock Busso on a broken-in stock exhaust sounds great, Alfa was good at that. Sounds good with modified exhaust as well. The 12v SOHC cars with solid lifters and pushrods to the exhaust valves also have a mechanical clatter that is not present in the 24v cars.

    Look up Saab Turbo X....single turbo 2.8 V6, sounds glorious especially in stock guise or with a downpipe. That Saab V6 (b284 or lp9) was made in Australia (Holden fisherman bend)in the same plant as the Alfa V6 (fun fact).

    Why did car makers never make use of the VR6. Seems like a great solution.

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just for sound, it saves not enough length or height or is similar enough to other concepts to be of any use (with straight 6 and 4's you can use dimensions and tools for making the block or head that are similar, and even with a straight 5 you can do that, but not with a VR6)

    I cannot fathom that you talked about straight 6's and never mentioned Jaguar.

    I like the sound of the Gen 1 and 2 Taurus SHO and Buick GN or GNX V6s. I remember Indy in 1996, when the Buick's went by, the ground shook. They sounded better then the Chevrolet or Ford V8s. What about the Opel Calibra Touring Car or the Jaguar XJ220?

    I believe the original V6 was a narrow angle SINGLE head Lancia design. Recently I heard the head was flat and the pistons were recessed instead for the chambers. Lamborghini used this method in the car that followed the Espada. Best sounding V6 street engine to my ears is the Toyota motor used in the Lotus 400 & 410 Sport. Busso V6 do sound good too

    Ford Taurus SHO motor by Yamaha? I've seen videos and they sound pretty good.
    Agree with Derek about Ferrari V8s. Only good-sounding one to my ears is the 458 because of the induction roar. The rest of them are just flat, high-pitched and screamy. Flat-plane V8s generally don't sound good.
    Used to own a Busso-engined GT 3.2 Coupe and it was indeed magical, although I think the 3.0 is the best sounding variant of the Busso because of the cam profile. You swap some 3.0 cams into a 2.5 and they sound great.
