I have been fighting with the Write-On effect for 10 years. Thank you for showing me this Stroke effect. It worked exactly how I expected Write-On to work. Write-On works about 3% of the time.
I used a font with lots of width variation. It required lots of adjusting bezier selection points to avoid revealing upcoming stroke direction changes, but it was a great challenge, and was a success.
Great tutorial, very simple, straightforward, to the point, and got me what I needed. It's so much better than scrubbing through a 20-minute long video. Thank you very much!

I just spent most of a day following another video's instructions that involved a separate adjustment layer with each letter having to be a separate stroke, and the keyframes having to be synced manually between all of them--incredibly tedious and finicky, just to get three simple words down. . . SO wish I'd seen this first!! Thank you!
Great guide, and simpler than others that are available. As someone as commented below though, this works a treat with white text on a black back ground, but will not render to video when using black text on a white background. Taken me hours to find this out (by reading a comment below). Took seconds to flip the colours and it renders perfectly. No idea why this should be the case but it is!
Thanks Dale, glad I could help out. Maybe use a white solid layer for the background? If you set the background comp to white it may still render transparent which will be an alpha (usually black). So black text on a black background even if your composition background is white.

Screw drawing in the paths by hand. Just right click on the text layer, got to Create---->Create Masks From Text. Works everytime.
Truee but it doesn’t go in the same directions you would write the text by hand

mine isn't working. Did everything you said and it will not write it out at the end when I press space bar what am I missing?
Maybe check the effects panel? Make sure the stroke effect is set to reveal?
