I watched this fight several times already what brought me back was the blue corner podcast when they interviewed Paulie cotto and Zab together and this fight was spoken about Paulie was saying how hard cotto hit he felt like it was punishment but as I watched this fight another time man Paulie did an amazing job at boxing cotto his hand speed and combinations were on point but cotto's power dominated I tip my hat off to Paulie he really proved that he can go toe to toe with the best if Paulie was a power puncher cotto would've gotten dropped a few times . Lol! I came back to it because of that too. I’m watching it so differently now. It’s crazy how Paulies insight on the fight made me wanna watch this again and also I’m older. Back then I was a kid. The fight was on June 10th 06. I had just turned 18 June 2nd. I’ve learned so much about boxing since then, I’m watching this so differently today and more enjoyable and more aware of why things happen. From being weight drained on cotto side, to Paulie literally being the smaller guy even though they both weighed the Same the day of the weigh ins. I’m sure cotto came in to this fight he had to be at least a super welterweight, I’m sure cotto came in this one at 154 while Paulie probably rehydrated to 145 maybe, maybe 147

6 rounds a piece? Looks like someone went to the Barry Tompkins school of scoring boxing. Malignaggi showed tremendous heart and was competitive in a lot of areas. But he was the victim of a major assault. No way this was a 6 rounds a piece fight. Paulie got three rounds maybe four if you want to be sympathetic to him.
Good Fight a bit too much clinching but it happens. I bloody love Miguel Cotto, great effort by Malinaggi more Power might have been different but Cotto has a great chin, when I heard the Commentator say MC had a suspect chin I near fell off the chair!
I cant believe Malignaggi won and defeated great boxers during those time with very slick style of fighting but boring some for audiences. For me his style has brains than other haters here that says he has no power. He only did what the officials did in every fight protect yourself at all times, his styles prevented himself to not have horrible injuries or braindamage in boxing... He is a legend for me.

I think that first right hand over the top in the first round busted Paulie's orbital bone. He fought twelve rounds with the best fighter around at that time with a busted face. Not too shabby.
Paulie has had some clown moments in his career but you have to respect him for lasting 12 rounds and making it a semi-competitive fight despite a cut in the first round, a knockdown in the 2nd, and a broken cheek bone by the 4th or 5th.
The fight was a lot closer than semi competitive, ive scored it many times and have often scored it a draw or a 1 point victory for Cotto because of rd 2 knockdown. That said, for such a master boxer Im surprised how often Paulie backed up with hands down. Worst defensive mistake in boxing and he did it all the time. Almost got him knocked out against Chris Hernandez/Fernandez in his comeback fight after Hatton loss. But like usual his toughness kicked in.
paulir has a good attack, what I don't like is his defense, hands down and open, on the clinche thats how he end up hugging and his foot work and hands makes him eat alot of punches, he needs a closed guard and more feet work, he is got potential

The continuous grabbing Cotto's arms saved him from going down. Very defensive boxing; cannot win an important fight like that. In fact, the few times he didn't grab Cotto, Cotto beat him pretty tough.

I think that first right hand over the top in the first round busted Paulie's orbital bone. He fought twelve rounds with the best fighter around at that time with a busted face. Not too shabby.
I think it was more on the jaw-line, but like you said it was not too shabby. Paulie would never be accused of lacking courage.
Paulie has had some clown moments in his career but you have to respect him for lasting 12 rounds and making it a semi-competitive fight despite a cut in the first round, a knockdown in the 2nd, and a broken cheek bone by the 4th or 5th.
The fight was a lot closer than semi competitive, ive scored it many times and have often scored it a draw or a 1 point victory for Cotto because of rd 2 knockdown.
That said, for such a master boxer Im surprised how often Paulie backed up with hands down. Worst defensive mistake in boxing and he did it all the time. Almost got him knocked out against Chris Hernandez/Fernandez in his comeback fight after Hatton loss. But like usual his toughness kicked in.
It was a fucking beat down, period. And Cotto was weigh drained as fuck here
