Officially recognized as a non-profit organization in 2002, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a unique place that aims to restore plant and animal species that are considered extinct or scarce, as well as restore the landscape and the very ecosystem of these areas to what they were 300 years ago. The staff of the reserve did an incredible job. The unique environmental project was complicated by the fact that in such an arid climate, the restoration of populations of some animals and plants seemed almost impossible!
But here is the result! Riverine Rabbit, Desert and Southwestern Black Rhino, Cape Mountain Zebra, and Cheetahs are a few species still considered nearly extinct. But Sanbona is a place where specialists tirelessly monitor the reproduction and comfortable living conditions of these amazing creatures, doing an inherently incredible job!

Our filmmaker Rober Hofmeyr shared the story of his trip to Sanbona. When he was there it was in the middle of a Covid-19 lockdown, so there were no other guests. This meant he was free to fly the drone without disturbing anyone. He does remember the weather being pretty bad most of the time, with high winds and very cold temperatures in the night and early morning.
Sanbona is an incredible reserve and, even though they do have the Big 5, they try to focus on the unique aspects of its location: the amazing landscapes and diverse flora. Although we were able to get out of the vehicle and explore on foot (with a guide) the drone was the best way to capture the dramatic landscapes.
