Man some of the complaining I saw about the trailer and Ciri has got to be the most brain dead takes I have ever seen to do with gaming. I have played through Witcher 3 twice now, both times to 100%.. Ciri is integral to the story, her being the next protagonist makes complete logical sense, all 3 Ciri endings in Witcher 3 can lead to her continuing what she wants, which is to become a witcher. Evidently she does as we can see. I would not be suprised if Yen became some sort of a trial of the grasses scientist after the events of Witcher 3, it would make sense. We know that the reason why theres very few witchers is that the formulas for the Trial of the Grasses were lost, by the time TW3 takes place and no new witchers were produced in that entire time and there has been very little effort to reproduce any formulas properly. But, Yen (with help of Vezimir) finds a way, and replicates the process on Uma. This would be a really fun progression on that front in Witcher 4, Ciri being a product of elder blood (who knows what happened after the blizzard with her powers) and a witcher. Also, I think it would be plausible that Ciri is starting her own Lynx school of witchers... maybe with a new method of creating witchers. Anyway, I am very interested as I freaking adore Witcher 3, all this nonsense slander is very weird
It's legit concerning how many fans of the series are going up in arms with CDPR's decision to make Ciri the protagonist of the next trilogy, there's some valid concerns regarding the approach to how much of Ciri's conversion into a Witcher rips a hole into the source material but a lot of people seem to act like fanatics to the point they can't see an explanation provided by the current writers as reasonable but instead as blatant bs or a "retcon" just to give themselves space to use the well known Witcher IP. I myself am a fan of the series like many of you all and have read the source material, yes Ciri becoming a full fledge Witcher is concerning and deserves an in-game explanation as to what happened or how it happened, my guess is that this is a NEW FORMULA for the trial of the grasses made by the lynx school of the Witchers which is far more refined that what was previously used, of course Ciri's Elder Blood must have benefited her in surviving the process somehow but I'm sure the writers have fully taken into consideration that an answer to the question has to be given. Ciri has always been her own persona even when she was apart from Geralt, she has a bratty attitude is hot headed and doesn't hold Geralt's neutrality approach to things, the one thing she wanted was to become a Witcher so the fact she went and found a way to fully become one even if it's against EVERYONE'S approval is very much within Ciri's personality. The people claiming that Ciri would not be doing Witcher stuff after what happened in W3 make me doubt if they have been paying attention at all. Being critical about the direction this new trilogy takes is fine but acting like what we saw in the trailer goes completely against what the Witcher series stands for is pretty dumb.
If they explain how the trial of grasses took place, and elder blood fits in well. Then I am good. I just worry about power creep, where her next villain is god like. One of these things I love about the Witcher is there is some believability in the lore. I also find the relationship of Geralt and Ciri one of my favorites, as being a father myself. So in summary I am good with it, just some lingering questions.
All it takes is an explanation for the trial of the grasses and that’s it. I would even say that Ciri being a witcher is not concerning at all. Guys, she literally became one in an ending in TW3 why did everybody forget that? But yes I agree people are really overreacting and have bad faith in CDPR, and I link all that because of CP2077 disastrous launch. I still see the same Ciri in TW3. It’s not like they changed her character.
@@Marcavian I think Ciri lost the majority of her power in defeating the White Frost, so he convinces Yennifer to help her develop a way to become a witcher. Eventually Yennifer gives in, and does. One hook for the story, is that Ciri uses her new Witcher abilities, and power to try and find a way to reconnect to her Elder Blood. Gameplay wise, weakening her to a witcher, is how they combat "power creep." Because with out, Ciri would be unstoppable. if you knew what you were doing in Witcher 3 with Ciri, only bosses ever posed any significant danger. The rest of the mobs were just fodder for you.
So this stuff came up in my discourse on another video, seems to fit in well: To start with, what's the deal with her Trials of the Grasses? I see she has a Lynx medallion, what's up with that? When/where did she undergo the Trials? Considering she looks like she's aged about a decade and is in her 30s now, did she do the Trials awhile ago or recently, i.e. is this taking place 50-75 years after the events of W3 or more like 10 years later? She doesn't use any of that Elder Blood phase shifting hacking power here, but she does use the Quen sign. She also has that lightning magic she pulled from the water & she imbued her chain with fire magic, coincidentally the chain was also on her hand while using the lightning. I just watched something from the devs specifically stating she was not using the Igni sign to imbue the chain, so yeah she can still use magic. I wonder if there's a story reason the Elder Blood stuff isn't on display, hell it could be as simple as we don't want to start the game with her too OP so we need an excuse for you to unlock that. People really need to calm down. It's a cinematic trailer after all, look at CDPR's previous ones and tell me how much they were 1:1 with the final products.
People (myself included) are mad because they feel forced to play as a woman and can't associate themselves with that character. All the retcon bs is simply them venting and reaching for the lowest hanging fruit. That's why the devs' "explanation", however "reasonable" it may be, in your opinion, will never suffice.
I did a comparison of Witcher 3 Ciri and how she looks now her face is very similar but grizzled and sure older looking, more 40's to 50's. It will be good when we find out how far in the future from 3 this is, but I am very happy Ciri is the lead character as I believed she should have her own game.
We knew it was going to be Ciri in my opinion. I'm cautiously optimistic, I just want all of the lore things explained not just some lazy interview to shuffle it away.
I think its hilarious how at the end of Witcher 3, pretty much everyone agreed and liked the fact that Ciri is the logical next step in the franchise after Geralt,, but now that is actually happening everyone is whining.
Ciri can't be a Witcher according to lore. She'd die if she went through the Trial of the Grasses and that's assuming there is any one left that knows how to preform it. At the end of Witcher 3 the "good ending" implies that Ciri is a "Witcher" in name only.

@@ChaseAlbertinot necessarily. The lore isn’t exactly clear on the issue. We know it’s never been done before, but there’s no hard and fast rule about it (like with Space Marines have). The most we know is that in the original testing, all the female subjects died alongside the vast majority of the boys, with only five boys surviving. And rather than figure out how to tailor the process to make a female Witcher, they instead focused on the large pool of already available subjects that they know could work (all the unwanted and orphan boys of the world). So long as they take the time to flesh out how it happened, it need not be a problem. It’s something that can be written around to work, as Sapkowski himself hasn’t shut down the idea. Of all characters, Ciri would be the most likely to do the seemingly impossible and survive an experimental version of the trials to have a female Witcher. The elder blood makes her built different. For my personal preference. I’d have preferred a character creator, but I’m fine with playing as Ciri. She’s a known quantity and a fun character, to boot. So I’ll be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. If they mess it up, then so be it, but if they do it well, then let’s give them the credit for it if that time comes.

I'm from Serbia and remember grandma scaring me with the Bauk. A non-descript dark force that lurks out of sight and is going to get you if you don't behave. Wild. The obvious way to handle Ciri's Elder Blood powers imo is to simply say that facing the White Frost drained her of most of the "elf magic". It's an easy excuse to start her off at "level 1".
I gotta admit, I wanted them to create a new original character that got to play as. But I'll take Ciri any day of the week over Build A -Bear- Witcher.
Ciri looks 30ish, roughly a decade older than she looked in the previous game. Given how slowly Witchers age, it's likely it's been even longer. She looks like a regular woman who hasn't been pampered and sheltered her whole life. I swear some people have never seen a real woman before.

A friend showed me a still from this trailer and aked me who she is. I thought at first it's not a "she" at all, and I certainly never thought for a second that it was Ciri, and I have 700 hours in all three Witcher games, plus I read all the books. I really don't know what you're on about.

I think CDPR used to say back about a year ago that they wanted to focus on continuing the Witcher story, while building Cyberpunk and another new IP right? By that I took it to mean they wanted to make games for different people. Established characters & make your own characters.
There's also German mythology in the monsters and from what I know the Bruxa is actually a Vampire from Portugal, not to mention Djinns, which are from Arabic mythology.
cdpr, for reasons beyond me, decided to axe the wonderfully talented, already established in game jo wyatt and hire a new vo Ciara Berkeley to voice ciri... the protag. Just doesnt make sense to me...
People having a problem with her look always makes me shake my head. If you've seen any of the trailers after the witcher 3, especially the one they did for GWENT game, she doesn't look all that much different from how she did in that one, only older.
Given that W4 is at least a few years away I hope everyone can show some patience (and stay classy) until we have a lot more information and, if nothing else, actual gameplay footage. Whether or not the W4 is completely consistent with the Witcher universe is not something that affects how good the game is. I am hopeful that CDPR takes their time and releases a polished gem and that everyone is patient enough to let them do it.
My goodness, really people have a problem with Ciri's appearance? Get a life, touch some grass. She looks amazing, it's a new engine, new model, she's older now. Now, about her being a witcher - that's a choice and we will see if it's a good one. Maybe she should be just a magic wielding warrior, not a witcher, because there was so much about Grass Trial in the lore that it could be cheap to change the lore. She could still fight like a witcher, cast signs and additionally other spells. The main mechanical missing piece would be potions, but there is the whole department of magic and spells that would make up for it and also would make Ciri not your typical witcher.
Well, Ciri wasn't my first choice, but we'll go with it. I'm sure they will explain how and why she becomes a Witcher for these games. And we don't really know how much older Ciri is compared to how she was in The Witcher 3. And to all those saying it breaks the book lore... Not really because everything from all the games happens AFTER the books, so unless they openly and blatantly contradict something, all cards are on the tables.
Anybody upset with the decision to have Ciri be the protagonist here either hasn't been paying attention or isn't a genuine fan. CDPR has LONG said that Witcher 3 was Geralt's last game as the lead, this shouldn't be a fucking surprise to anyone. Blood & Wine was literally about him retiring! Ciri was not only set up as the next lead in the game but she was by far the most important character in the IP at large. Whether that be the source material or games.

The best ending is her becoming a Witcher in name alone at that point, which also serves to bookend a chapter of her story so far. That chapter being chased by the Wild Hunt for her blood right. She's had plenty of other chapters in her story in the source material before that and is now facing an open future in games as of that ending, ready to take up Geralt's mantle. I don't really know what you're on about there. CDPR themselves said that the story takes place several years after the third game, which probably means 10 or so at the most. They made it look that they're at the exact same time period as the third game. And she doesn't even remotely look recognizable. You could easily recognize me by using my toddler (and let alone teenage) image, and you're saying she somehow got a male superhero jawline, soldier's chin and a bloated botox face in several years? Give me a break. Further more, she's not a witcher. She did not go through the trial of grass, nor any of the other trials. SHE can't because no adult can, and no female can. The trial can only be passed by very small percentage of young boys for myriad of reasons. Even if she somehow could, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. She couldn't have lost her powers because they're in her DNA, in her blood. Why would she trade those for inferior witcher abilities? Further more, they still didn't retrieve the methodology of the trials, at least not in its entirety, so she couldn't have gone trough them anyways. And finally, even if there was a way to repeat the process, there's no one that would want or do that to her, especially not Yen or Geralt. But it's all make believe, ifs and buts, stupid way of thinking outside of very specific and canonically established universe. They broke canon just...'cause.
My personal dream Witcher game would be a game where you create your own witcher just like Cyberpunk 2077 and instead of the corpo/nomad/streetkid background you would choose the school you are from and each school would give a distinct flavor to your playthrough It’s a shame The Witcher 4 is not the game that will satisfy this desire i hope the next game in 2035 does it 😂
Me personally, it would've been fine with another legendary witcher they created, like Erland of Larvik from the Griffin school. Character creation is cool, but I hear they're making a multi-player witcher game. We'll definitely get it for that. Keep your hopes up!
My main concern is actually that the reveal trailer doesn't really look like a CDPR game. It's probably likely that the trailer has no bearing on the in game visuals but just a point.
The things is that they will for sure make some mechanic where Ciri will forget/loose her powers (and has to relearn everything) which is kinda cliche. Because she was very powerful by the end of W3. Anyways Ciri was the safest bet for the protagonist, we will have a hell of the story that is for sure! I guess maybe Ciri went for trail of grasses with the Lynx school and lost some of her magic skills. I was quietly hoping for a character and being able to create someone with a clear page and choose your own school of the wichers but eaiter way I am happy. If the game wont be rushed we will for sure have another 10/10 game from CDPR!

My biggest worry was that this trailer was too similar to the first one, especially the killing monsters part. So, I worry they will focus on nostalgia instead of making a good game.
There will be more trailers. It would make sense for them to show just things we’re familiar with in this first one, otherwise all the anti-Ciri idiots would also say “see? Didn’t see any Witcher abilities/potions, this isn’t a Witcher game!!” I’m pretty sure CDPR is working hard to innovate and bring new things to the table with Ciri, hopefully we’ll see the new stuff in next trailers, especially gameplay ones.
Im not sold on it. Witcher 3 is my favorite game ever and i think they could never satisfy everyone. But i really do feel like ciri and Geralt had their storys wrapped up at the end of witcher 3. They defeated the wild hunt. I just have a feeling that its going to be woman witcher changing traditions just for the sake of it. Yeah they’ll need to avoid the Mary Sue syndrome (e.g. Rey), but I don’t think CDPR has ever come short with storytelling and character development. I haven’t played Witcher 1 or 2, but Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk were masterpieces!

Ignoring the grifters, her face looks weird in the CGI trailer because they didn't age her properly. With age your skin thins and parts of it become more hollow, this Ciri's face looks both strangely fuller and older at the same time which makes her look like botox queen from some angels. From other angles she kinda looks like young Ciri. But CG trailers never look like the game, so I think it's just CG wackery.

@@YaGars I guess. It depends quite a lot on the team assembled around him. A director mostly needs to have a clear vision for the end product and the ability to communicate that vision effectively. They don't necessarily need to be able to do all the jobs themselves, just ensure that everyone is working toward a coherent and high quality end goal. As an artist and film grad myself, I can safely say that storytelling sensibilities are often intrinsic to a lot of artistic fields, so I wouldn't necessarily be concerned about a lack of "official" experience in those areas, especially knowing how CDPR's quest design process generally works and has been refined over the years (thx to insights from Pawel). Game design and especially game mechanics are more technical, but those are also more likely to be largely "solved problems"; it's doubtful TW4 will deviate too significantly from TW3 in terms of design and mechanics. As long as there's a team capable of executing that vision in a new engine, I'm not sure there's much need to worry about that either.

Appreciate the video LKM . I’m gonna be honest, bro, I’m seeing red flags here. The first thing that stands out to me is that the old CDPR team that made the previous Witcher trilogy had a respect for the source material and predefined lore. They explored their own paths within it, but within the framework of following that established source material. What I see them doing here with ciri is a disregard for that preestablished source material. I see corporate reasoning on retconning and reusing a pre-established character from a pre-existing ip like a safety net and security blanket. This kind of reusing and repurposing of old assets let’s call it is how you end up with stagnation. Creative artist allowed to be authentic create new originality. All of our characters that we know in love within any IP were at one point or another brand new with no predefine. It was just creative artist creating. The way you grow this universe within its pre-established foundation is by exploring new stories and new characters and to go beyond what you’ve already explored. The role of the Witcher is a man’s role as defined and established in the source material/books . Men’s biological hormonal composition is different from women’s and so Witcher would take small boys to put through these life-threatening trials that only even few of them survived as they were turned into mutants . It was not a role for women. And ciri’s role was also uniquely defined. With the elder blood and being protected by Witcher and also trained by them, but not able to ever authentically be one which was understood. What the team is doing here feels like the same kind of justification more or less that we were seeing with what happened for Netflix’s Witcher or most notably with Disney Star Wars. It is a lack of creativity for the sake of lazy reliance on familiarity of brand recognition. It is selfish justification for repurposing preestablished/predefined material or characters. And it leads to inauthentic , disingenuous stagnation. And I hate to say this, but I pick up on the subtle reasoning of priorities here being related to a lot of of irrelevant modern day narratives. I hope I’m wrong about that but it seems pretty obvious. Again, I like Ciri as a character, but her story is uniquely tied to Geralts story . You can’t separate that. And we had such a perfect ending with blood and wine, as well as the special tidbits afterward with everyone including Ciri , at Corvo house for a final farewell and salute sendoff. All good stories have a beginning, a middle and an end and that was a great ending to that story. I thought we were going back to a pre-established world to begin a new story with a new school and new characters and explore all new aspects here with creative freedom. But instead, I’m just seeing a reusing and repurposing and retconning . And I hate that . I’m worried, bro, ….. I’m very worried.
We still don't know Geralt's involvement with the story, he could even be playable as far as we know. With Ciri here being able to teleport to other worlds there's a hell of a lot of potential for more worldbuilding. I trust CDPR with the story. They never dissapointed with that regard. The one thing I don't understand is why would Ciri go trough The Trial of Grasses if she has Elder Blood powers? She didn't lose her powers since we can see that in the trailer. Weakened maybe?

Man some of the complaining I saw about the trailer and Ciri has got to be the most brain dead takes I have ever seen to do with gaming. I have played through Witcher 3 twice now, both times to 100%.. Ciri is integral to the story, her being the next protagonist makes complete logical sense, all 3 Ciri endings in Witcher 3 can lead to her continuing what she wants, which is to become a witcher. Evidently she does as we can see. I would not be suprised if Yen became some sort of a trial of the grasses scientist after the events of Witcher 3, it would make sense.
We know that the reason why theres very few witchers is that the formulas for the Trial of the Grasses were lost, by the time TW3 takes place and no new witchers were produced in that entire time and there has been very little effort to reproduce any formulas properly. But, Yen (with help of Vezimir) finds a way, and replicates the process on Uma. This would be a really fun progression on that front in Witcher 4, Ciri being a product of elder blood (who knows what happened after the blizzard with her powers) and a witcher. Also, I think it would be plausible that Ciri is starting her own Lynx school of witchers... maybe with a new method of creating witchers. Anyway, I am very interested as I freaking adore Witcher 3, all this nonsense slander is very weird
It's legit concerning how many fans of the series are going up in arms with CDPR's decision to make Ciri the protagonist of the next trilogy, there's some valid concerns regarding the approach to how much of Ciri's conversion into a Witcher rips a hole into the source material but a lot of people seem to act like fanatics to the point they can't see an explanation provided by the current writers as reasonable but instead as blatant bs or a "retcon" just to give themselves space to use the well known Witcher IP.
I myself am a fan of the series like many of you all and have read the source material, yes Ciri becoming a full fledge Witcher is concerning and deserves an in-game explanation as to what happened or how it happened, my guess is that this is a NEW FORMULA for the trial of the grasses made by the lynx school of the Witchers which is far more refined that what was previously used, of course Ciri's Elder Blood must have benefited her in surviving the process somehow but I'm sure the writers have fully taken into consideration that an answer to the question has to be given.
Ciri has always been her own persona even when she was apart from Geralt, she has a bratty attitude is hot headed and doesn't hold Geralt's neutrality approach to things, the one thing she wanted was to become a Witcher so the fact she went and found a way to fully become one even if it's against EVERYONE'S approval is very much within Ciri's personality. The people claiming that Ciri would not be doing Witcher stuff after what happened in W3 make me doubt if they have been paying attention at all.
Being critical about the direction this new trilogy takes is fine but acting like what we saw in the trailer goes completely against what the Witcher series stands for is pretty dumb.
If they explain how the trial of grasses took place, and elder blood fits in well. Then I am good. I just worry about power creep, where her next villain is god like. One of these things I love about the Witcher is there is some believability in the lore. I also find the relationship of Geralt and Ciri one of my favorites, as being a father myself.
So in summary I am good with it, just some lingering questions.
All it takes is an explanation for the trial of the grasses and that’s it. I would even say that Ciri being a witcher is not concerning at all. Guys, she literally became one in an ending in TW3 why did everybody forget that? But yes I agree people are really overreacting and have bad faith in CDPR, and I link all that because of CP2077 disastrous launch.

@@Marcavian I think Ciri lost the majority of her power in defeating the White Frost, so he convinces Yennifer to help her develop a way to become a witcher. Eventually Yennifer gives in, and does. One hook for the story, is that Ciri uses her new Witcher abilities, and power to try and find a way to reconnect to her Elder Blood.
Gameplay wise, weakening her to a witcher, is how they combat "power creep." Because with out, Ciri would be unstoppable. if you knew what you were doing in Witcher 3 with Ciri, only bosses ever posed any significant danger. The rest of the mobs were just fodder for you.

To start with, what's the deal with her Trials of the Grasses? I see she has a Lynx medallion, what's up with that? When/where did she undergo the Trials? Considering she looks like she's aged about a decade and is in her 30s now, did she do the Trials awhile ago or recently, i.e. is this taking place 50-75 years after the events of W3 or more like 10 years later?
She doesn't use any of that Elder Blood phase shifting hacking power here, but she does use the Quen sign. She also has that lightning magic she pulled from the water & she imbued her chain with fire magic, coincidentally the chain was also on her hand while using the lightning. I just watched something from the devs specifically stating she was not using the Igni sign to imbue the chain, so yeah she can still use magic.
I wonder if there's a story reason the Elder Blood stuff isn't on display, hell it could be as simple as we don't want to start the game with her too OP so we need an excuse for you to unlock that.
People really need to calm down. It's a cinematic trailer after all, look at CDPR's previous ones and tell me how much they were 1:1 with the final products.
People (myself included) are mad because they feel forced to play as a woman and can't associate themselves with that character. All the retcon bs is simply them venting and reaching for the lowest hanging fruit. That's why the devs' "explanation", however "reasonable" it may be, in your opinion, will never suffice.
I did a comparison of Witcher 3 Ciri and how she looks now her face is very similar but grizzled and sure older looking, more 40's to 50's. It will be good when we find out how far in the future from 3 this is, but I am very happy Ciri is the lead character as I believed she should have her own game.
We knew it was going to be Ciri in my opinion. I'm cautiously optimistic, I just want all of the lore things explained not just some lazy interview to shuffle it away.
I have faith they will be idk why I'm so hopeful, a great flowing story that fits into place in the lore

I think its hilarious how at the end of Witcher 3, pretty much everyone agreed and liked the fact that Ciri is the logical next step in the franchise after Geralt,, but now that is actually happening everyone is whining.
Ciri can't be a Witcher according to lore. She'd die if she went through the Trial of the Grasses and that's assuming there is any one left that knows how to preform it. At the end of Witcher 3 the "good ending" implies that Ciri is a "Witcher" in name only.

@@ChaseAlbertinot necessarily. The lore isn’t exactly clear on the issue. We know it’s never been done before, but there’s no hard and fast rule about it (like with Space Marines have). The most we know is that in the original testing, all the female subjects died alongside the vast majority of the boys, with only five boys surviving. And rather than figure out how to tailor the process to make a female Witcher, they instead focused on the large pool of already available subjects that they know could work (all the unwanted and orphan boys of the world). So long as they take the time to flesh out how it happened, it need not be a problem. It’s something that can be written around to work, as Sapkowski himself hasn’t shut down the idea. Of all characters, Ciri would be the most likely to do the seemingly impossible and survive an experimental version of the trials to have a female Witcher. The elder blood makes her built different.
For my personal preference. I’d have preferred a character creator, but I’m fine with playing as Ciri. She’s a known quantity and a fun character, to boot. So I’ll be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. If they mess it up, then so be it, but if they do it well, then let’s give them the credit for it if that time comes.

I think CDPR used to say back about a year ago that they wanted to focus on continuing the Witcher story, while building Cyberpunk and another new IP right?
By that I took it to mean they wanted to make games for different people. Established characters & make your own characters.
There's also German mythology in the monsters and from what I know the Bruxa is actually a Vampire from Portugal, not to mention Djinns, which are from Arabic mythology.

People having a problem with her look always makes me shake my head. If you've seen any of the trailers after the witcher 3, especially the one they did for GWENT game, she doesn't look all that much different from how she did in that one, only older.
Given that W4 is at least a few years away I hope everyone can show some patience (and stay classy) until we have a lot more information and, if nothing else, actual gameplay footage. Whether or not the W4 is completely consistent with the Witcher universe is not something that affects how good the game is.
I am hopeful that CDPR takes their time and releases a polished gem and that everyone is patient enough to let them do it.

Now, about her being a witcher - that's a choice and we will see if it's a good one. Maybe she should be just a magic wielding warrior, not a witcher, because there was so much about Grass Trial in the lore that it could be cheap to change the lore. She could still fight like a witcher, cast signs and additionally other spells. The main mechanical missing piece would be potions, but there is the whole department of magic and spells that would make up for it and also would make Ciri not your typical witcher.
I guess some people want her to never even age a day.

Well, Ciri wasn't my first choice, but we'll go with it. I'm sure they will explain how and why she becomes a Witcher for these games. And we don't really know how much older Ciri is compared to how she was in The Witcher 3.

Anybody upset with the decision to have Ciri be the protagonist here either hasn't been paying attention or isn't a genuine fan. CDPR has LONG said that Witcher 3 was Geralt's last game as the lead, this shouldn't be a fucking surprise to anyone. Blood & Wine was literally about him retiring! Ciri was not only set up as the next lead in the game but she was by far the most important character in the IP at large. Whether that be the source material or games.

The best ending is her becoming a Witcher in name alone at that point, which also serves to bookend a chapter of her story so far. That chapter being chased by the Wild Hunt for her blood right. She's had plenty of other chapters in her story in the source material before that and is now facing an open future in games as of that ending, ready to take up Geralt's mantle.

CDPR themselves said that the story takes place several years after the third game, which probably means 10 or so at the most. They made it look that they're at the exact same time period as the third game. And she doesn't even remotely look recognizable. You could easily recognize me by using my toddler (and let alone teenage) image, and you're saying she somehow got a male superhero jawline, soldier's chin and a bloated botox face in several years? Give me a break.
Further more, she's not a witcher. She did not go through the trial of grass, nor any of the other trials. SHE can't because no adult can, and no female can. The trial can only be passed by very small percentage of young boys for myriad of reasons.
Even if she somehow could, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
She couldn't have lost her powers because they're in her DNA, in her blood.
Why would she trade those for inferior witcher abilities?
Further more, they still didn't retrieve the methodology of the trials, at least not in its entirety, so she couldn't have gone trough them anyways.
And finally, even if there was a way to repeat the process, there's no one that would want or do that to her, especially not Yen or Geralt.
But it's all make believe, ifs and buts, stupid way of thinking outside of very specific and canonically established universe. They broke canon just...'cause.
My personal dream Witcher game would be a game where you create your own witcher just like Cyberpunk 2077 and instead of the corpo/nomad/streetkid background you would choose the school you are from and each school would give a distinct flavor to your playthrough

My main concern is actually that the reveal trailer doesn't really look like a CDPR game. It's probably likely that the trailer has no bearing on the in game visuals but just a point.

The things is that they will for sure make some mechanic where Ciri will forget/loose her powers (and has to relearn everything) which is kinda cliche. Because she was very powerful by the end of W3. Anyways Ciri was the safest bet for the protagonist, we will have a hell of the story that is for sure! I guess maybe Ciri went for trail of grasses with the Lynx school and lost some of her magic skills.
I was quietly hoping for a character and being able to create someone with a clear page and choose your own school of the wichers but eaiter way I am happy. If the game wont be rushed we will for sure have another 10/10 game from CDPR!

My biggest worry was that this trailer was too similar to the first one, especially the killing monsters part. So, I worry they will focus on nostalgia instead of making a good game.
There will be more trailers. It would make sense for them to show just things we’re familiar with in this first one, otherwise all the anti-Ciri idiots would also say “see? Didn’t see any Witcher abilities/potions, this isn’t a Witcher game!!”
I’m pretty sure CDPR is working hard to innovate and bring new things to the table with Ciri, hopefully we’ll see the new stuff in next trailers, especially gameplay ones.
Im not sold on it. Witcher 3 is my favorite game ever and i think they could never satisfy everyone. But i really do feel like ciri and Geralt had their storys wrapped up at the end of witcher 3. Yeah they’ll need to avoid the Mary Sue syndrome (e.g. Rey), but I don’t think CDPR has ever come short with storytelling and character development. I haven’t played Witcher 1 or 2, but Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk were masterpieces!

Wrong, why don't you actually read, it says none survived. She isn't normal, she's of elder blood. Also she was already trained as a witcher and knows magic. She could definitely survive the trial of the grasses
Even if that was actually in the books, it's a dumb part of the lore, so who cares? If this triggers you, I would ask you to look into yourself and ask yourself, why it triggers you. And 'because the lore says so' is not a valid argument. And if you think it is, please tell me how it makes the story better or how it is important for the story that only males can become Witchers?
Ignoring the grifters, her face looks weird in the CGI trailer because they didn't age her properly. With age your skin thins and parts of it become more hollow, this Ciri's face looks both strangely fuller and older at the same time which makes her look like botox queen from some angels. From other angles she kinda looks like young Ciri. But CG trailers never look like the game, so I think it's just CG wackery.

@@YaGars I guess. It depends quite a lot on the team assembled around him. A director mostly needs to have a clear vision for the end product and the ability to communicate that vision effectively. They don't necessarily need to be able to do all the jobs themselves, just ensure that everyone is working toward a coherent and high quality end goal. As an artist and film grad myself, I can safely say that storytelling sensibilities are often intrinsic to a lot of artistic fields, so I wouldn't necessarily be concerned about a lack of "official" experience in those areas, especially knowing how CDPR's quest design process generally works and has been refined over the years (thx to insights from Pawel). Game design and especially game mechanics are more technical, but those are also more likely to be largely "solved problems"; it's doubtful TW4 will deviate too significantly from TW3 in terms of design and mechanics. As long as there's a team capable of executing that vision in a new engine, I'm not sure there's much need to worry about that either.

I’m gonna be honest, bro, I’m seeing red flags here.
The first thing that stands out to me is that the old CDPR team that made the previous Witcher trilogy had a respect for the source material and predefined lore. They explored their own paths within it, but within the framework of following that established source material.
What I see them doing here with ciri is a disregard for that preestablished source material. I see corporate reasoning on retconning and reusing a pre-established character from a pre-existing ip like a safety net and security blanket. This kind of reusing and repurposing of old assets let’s call it is how you end up with stagnation.
Creative artist allowed to be authentic create new originality. All of our characters that we know in love within any IP were at one point or another brand new with no predefine. It was just creative artist creating.
The way you grow this universe within its pre-established foundation is by exploring new stories and new characters and to go beyond what you’ve already explored.
The role of the Witcher is a man’s role as defined and established in the source material/books . Men’s biological hormonal composition is different from women’s and so Witcher would take small boys to put through these life-threatening trials that only even few of them survived as they were turned into mutants . It was not a role for women. And ciri’s role was also uniquely defined. With the elder blood and being protected by Witcher and also trained by them, but not able to ever authentically be one which was understood.
What the team is doing here feels like the same kind of justification more or less that we were seeing with what happened for Netflix’s Witcher or most notably with Disney Star Wars. It is a lack of creativity for the sake of lazy reliance on familiarity of brand recognition. It is selfish justification for repurposing preestablished/predefined material or characters. And it leads to inauthentic , disingenuous stagnation.
And I hate to say this, but I pick up on the subtle reasoning of priorities here being related to a lot of of irrelevant modern day narratives. I hope I’m wrong about that but it seems pretty obvious.
Again, I like Ciri as a character, but her story is uniquely tied to Geralts story . You can’t separate that. And we had such a perfect ending with blood and wine, as well as the special tidbits afterward with everyone including Ciri , at Corvo house for a final farewell and salute sendoff. All good stories have a beginning, a middle and an end and that was a great ending to that story.
I thought we were going back to a pre-established world to begin a new story with a new school and new characters and explore all new aspects here with creative freedom. But instead, I’m just seeing a reusing and repurposing and retconning .
And I hate that .

We still don't know Geralt's involvement with the story, he could even be playable as far as we know.
With Ciri here being able to teleport to other worlds there's a hell of a lot of potential for more worldbuilding.
I trust CDPR with the story. They never dissapointed with that regard.
The one thing I don't understand is why would Ciri go trough The Trial of Grasses if she has Elder Blood powers?
She didn't lose her powers since we can see that in the trailer. Weakened maybe?

To be fair to the point, neither Geralt nor Yen died in the Lady of the Lake, so CDPR didn't really retcon anything in thar regard. An argument could be made for Regis only.
The problem is not an "old face" but rather oversized cheekbones. They are disproportionate to the jaw and eyes.

Ciri as protagonist, no interest. Ciri was never very interesting to begin with. Just a Mary Sue that rarely did anything worth of note in Witcher 3. Her schtick was the elder blood that made her special and teleport around and she got into trouble. Also playing as her in Witcher 3 was bad, she barely had any moves...
