I Restored a Balisong...sort of

- In this video I take a break from machining to do way too much sanding. But I also learn to anodize titanium and use my new heat treat oven. I bought this BRS Alpha Beast to help me with my baliscissors project. It was a bit beat up so I thought I'd use it to improve my finishing skills.

I feel like this is an example of "perfect is the enemy of good"
I would say it's a perfect example.
Wow. Just wow. I'm so amazed you would take on a project like this and go into the detail that you did. I'm also very jealous you have access to all that equipment.
Jacob Wrona it’s all just simple tools, not very expensive at all.
It honestly doesn’t seem that hard. The anodizing part seems really fun, and the idea of sanding something to a mirror finish seems rewarding. Man I really wanna try anodizing.
Rotary tools aren’t that expensive. You can buy a ok one for a little over 50 dollars
im already jealous that he has one of thise knifes.
@@mbtred1427 I'd hardly call a mill or a lathe simple and inexpensive

honestly same, his videos are so professionally done. His voice is so soothing and I don't get bored of any of his content

The 'after' results are really nice. I'm a big fan of the multicolor anodized look. You did a great job and should be proud. It sounds like you've learned a great deal!
Dude... for all the "imperfections" and "mistakes" and whatnot, this turned out so. Effing. COOL!!! You need to cut yourself some slack!
The handles! Argh! So amazing! The neon color looks really awesome, and paired with the splatters it's a double-cool thing! Plus they're so shiny!
This is probably the coolest thing I've seen all month (I see a lot of cool things, otherwise it might be coolest thing all year :P)

I'm really questioning how the youtube algorithm new something I would like that never crossed my mind.
This was so chill and fun to watch. I've never seen a knife workshopping video in my life but it was very entertaining!
the nail polish technique is probably the smartest and coolest way of making something bland into a call of duty camo, great work man
damn that's a really good video. i have been looking for these kind of videos for a while now. I'm glad i finally found one with the entire process and it has top tier editing. I bet it costed you a lot with all those power tools and such. Good Job on this one man
I have to say, even thought this was more or less a practice piece in the end, I think it turned out gorgeous. I'm going to have to look up this anodization tutorial you mentioned and do something similar with my next titanium scales or something.
You don't give yourself enough credit. This is amazing work
Thank you Contraption Collection: Your videos have constantly gotten me into a get it done mood, and because of that my life has just felt better. Thank you so much.

I hardly ever subscribe to someone after just one video, but it really surprised me how huge is the difference between yours actual sub count, and what it should be for your content and its quality. You're actually amazing. Keep going man!
Very cool project, and I love all of the tools in your workspace. I wish more people understood the importance of doing exactly what you're doing: trying new things! The volume of information acquired that way, especially since it's 'hands-on', can be substantial. It's also a gold mine of ideas.
this was a really cool video man, I really enjoyed watching it, I think it came out great! that splash anodizing looks awesome
lol sup DenDen
I would love to see more of these restorations. Maybe try a beat krake raken and try to anodize the aluminum handles.
Knife: super shiny
Contraption Collection: its a bit blotchy
Well this a rare sight, a real restoration, AND he added customization, AND its a balisong. 3 amazing things in one video
One of the key things that separates craftsman from master artisans and engineers is knowing when to stop. LS Starrett had a well known ideology. Something needs to be exactly as precision as required. No more, no less. Important to know when the job is done. Knowing when to walk away is important. You did a wonderful job and have a lot of skill! And you should be proud.
Ok now this clearly needs a million views and be on my recommended after 3 years

alright so i was scrolling through this video and saw this, i was interested and clicked. after seeing how much work and dedication and you calling your work "sub par" is complete bullshit, personally i think you did an excellent job with this knife. it looks absolutely stunning
Well, the thing is, compared to masters of craft, it is worse in both process and outcome. Almost everything we own or work with in our day to day is fairly pedestrian in nature, though, so it is very impressive regardless. He works hard and cares and that's what matters.
I was shocked to see how low the views where on a video of this quality!
very cool, dude!

Baby powder before putting in the foil, or you may end up with the issue of the blade welding to the stainless foil. The scale you get during heat treating is very similar to rust, so rust remover works at removing it. Most guys just soak in vinegar after heat treat to break up the scale.
I both enjoy the look of the new one and cannot do better. Good video.
Dude this is like my first time seeing this voltage color changing process and I just flipped out I love the multiple handles that don’t match it just looks so 80’s or something I love it I want that knife soooo bad lmaooo
This is a video of a man doing what he loves with a calm attitude.
i love this man and the way he makes his videos, so relaxing.
I didn't see any other comments mentioning this, but my preferred way to deal with sanding is to get a few thick glass plates, or granite counter top offcuts and use spray adhesive to mount the wet sanding paper to these. These substrates are generally really flat, and the adhesive makes it so the paper doesn't bunch or move around which also helps the paper last much longer. I also have a lunch tray that I lay them into on rubber feet, so the filings and water don't soil my workbench and helps with cleanup.
Man working with balisongs is a pain in the ass man even sanding bushings is a pain
this shit was so sick keep up the good work man
nice video saw this video in my recommend a couple of times, glad I clicked on it. chill guy with good angles that explains enough but doesn't get too repetitive. overall great video and definitely deserves a like, keep up the good work.

With all the beautiful perfect channels of restorations and builds this is pretty nice. Its more human than just a wordless beautiful picture. The experimenting with annodization was pretty rad too. I have a buddy who anodized my guitar stuff so I know the process a little but its wild watching it shift colors in there lol
