Thank you for the amazing coverage of the World Championship Daniel, it was an extremely entertaining WCh and your analysis was just the icing on the cake!
@18:25 Small correction: Ding did actually play Kg8 first, then Nepo gave another check, then Ding plays King back to h7, then Nepo repeats the original check...and only then does Ding play Rook g6 to block it. So there was actually a single repeat of a position. I suspect he did this just to add some quick increment on his clock before giving it a real think. Takes some serious nerves to play on for the win there with QRBvQRB still on the board. OTOH he did have 2 passed pawns and a solid Bishop defending them both. His instinct was correct.
Well, I have followed each game live and was able to watch the first two and a half rapid play games this morning before, regrettably, having to break away for several hours. I returned to see what happened, knowing that GM Daniel King would not let me down by disclosing the result in his video title, and have just watched this game, effectively, 'live'. Thank you so much Daniel for all the excellent coverage over the last few weeks, and for preserving my opportunity to see this game more or less as I wanted to.
Congratulations Ding! Says a lot about his bravery that on the live commentary with Fabiano Caruana they spent a while explaining why Ding definitely wouldn't play the self pin! Felt for Nepo. Wonder if he will get another shot at this point. The youngsters are coming. And having had pretty limited interest in this beforehand it has been completely gripping, not least because of your fantastic analysis.
P.S., ty for making vids covering every single game, even all the tie-break games, even the "boring" draws. (There were very few boring draws in this WCC, but still.) And ty for putting them up all on the very same day. That alone makes this one of the best recap channels on youtube. Very excellent coverage and i will look here in the future for other games. If you can cover more Ding and Rapport things then plz do!
Incredible and well deserved. I'm happy Liren won. And what an expression on his face afterwards. A truly genuine champion. The nerves. The fortitude to play the moves he did in that last game. That's how you claim victory. The pawns moves, c4 and what was it e5 in that endgame earlier in the match? The two moves that were easy to overlook but had clear meaning behind them. Rg6 is just insane. Not simplifying. Wow. And on the flip side I have great sympathy for Ian. In the end, I feel his stubbornness betrayed him. Going back to the Spanish, refusing to try something new. Insisting on his preparation which Ding appears to have successfully sidestepped for most of the match. And then the coverage. What would this match be without world class commentary the likes of which we were treated to on this channel? Thank you GM King! For the first time in a long time, I was unable to watch ANY of the games live. A tragedy. Yet, I don't feel I missed a thing because of your incredible work. Bravo! A thrilling match to follow because of PowerPlay Chess! Perhaps my favorite WC match of all time and the only one I never watched. :)
Thank you so much for covering these games. Personally I was rooting for Ding and the rocky start made me feel he wasn't doing so well. I'm happy he found his feet. I love your videos in particular how you use an engine. You acknowledge both its existence as a commentator, and it's absence as a player.
Thank you for the coverage of this WCC, GM King! I've been watching you since Anand-Carlsen, and I'll be tuning in for many more! Also, Powerplay to 100k already!!!!
the covid restrictions limiting his play, requirements for candidates, edging over 3rd/4th place in the candidates for 2nd place, Magnus dropping out... what a journey for Ding! Congratulations to him and thank you for all the videos Daniel!
Amazing coverage and analysis as always Daniel. Even in this day and age when there are thousands of chess channels with even super GM and GMs having channels, Mr King remains one of the best. I don't know if I'm biased and it's the English accent, but I find that Daniel can just explain complicated concepts and games in very simple way that makes it easy for beginners to understand but also is useful and engaging for intermediate players too. I can't speak for high level players since I am not one myself, but I assume they'd also enjoy such coverage from a "news" perspective since Daniel usually also goes into novelties and also gives the historical information. I think that's where Daniel shines compared to most of the other newer channels. Daniel has a wealth of experience and has been doing this for a very long time. He's covered everything basically and is like a chess encyclopedia. He can tell stories about little known things that others aren't able to do. So yeah. Thanks again Daniel. You are a legend in the commentary game and were doing this long before it became super profitable which just shows your enthusiasm and love for the game, even after all these years.. I hope King Ding and King King both have long reigns at the top in their respective fields of expertise. And yes, incase you were wondering, I am quite pleased with myself for just coming up with that awesome pun. No, I did not have it prepared long ago and was indeed m a novelty I just found OTB. Lol.
I'd like to say that fortune favours the brave, but really, both players went "balls to the walls" in this game. Incredible how daring they were in this last game. As I'm a big fan of Ding, this makes me very happy, though I must say, seeing Nepo at the end was absolutely heart rending. Thank you so very much for the amazing coverage. We may not have reached 100k, but for my money there is no better chess channel. I hope you have fun making these videos for us and there's great many more to come.
@@PowerPlayChess I too have rooted for Ding ever since the 2020 Candidates. I couldn't believe i never heard of him before, even in 2019 Sinquefield cup. I also forgot to say before, ty for making regular content vids and not going down the path of outrageous memes, thumbnails, ridiculous youtube antics and whatnot. That stuff is repulsive and your channel is one of the few that does not engage in that sort of thing, a breath of fresh air. (Another upside, your comment section is very respectable compared to many other channels.) I remember when the internet first got popular (2000-ish), and website-building advice had a phrase: "Content is king". Doesn't seem to be too popular these days but i still believe it. I think you will grow, maybe more slowly than others, but can achieve reasonable goals. 100K is still very close and doable! I have dropped some comments referring to power play chess on other (similar-style) channels. Ty for making chess great to watch and learn. This rly was the greatest WCC since Karpov-Kasparov, for which i was not alive back then. I dare say Ding vs Nepo makes up for that.
@@DrZygote214 Thank you for spreading the word about the channel. I occasionally indulge in clickbaity stuff, but frankly I don't feel comfortable doing it! So I will persist in my steady way...
You have made a great job with the analyses of the World Championship matches. For me the highlight of your series is the seperation of tiebreak. What I always like is that you show understanding for the human moves rather than saying that a player made a mistake, as the computer has a better suggestion. This exciting competition deserved your commentary- and vice versa.
Got through to the candidates in the backdoor via Karjakin's suspension and impromptu planned Chinese tournaments. Got to the World Championship match via Carlsen's abdication. Never ahead at any point... ...until the point which mattered most. The stars were aligned for Ding Liren. A very worthy world champion. One of the best three players in the world over the last 5 years and an incredible competitor. Thankyou for your coverage Daniel, flawless once again!! That's as far as my compliments will go though after your bees downed my team in the 93rd minute yesterday! 😩
For once I wasn't able to see the Bees as I was at a wedding! But it sounded like a fairly dire game. Sorry for your troubles...but I do hope Forest pull through. Great club.
Thanks Daniel, your commentary a worthy counterpart to the amazing bravura chess we have seen, full of enterprise and excitement. Congratulations to both players and of course Ding who shows that nice guys don’t finish last.
Finally had a chance to watch the games today live. What a heck of a game this one was...the reaction from Caruana, Hess and Sachdev at Rg6 was priceless. What guts to play that with a minute on the clock. A fitting end to any match, and I'm thankful we didn't have to go to the chaos of a blitz tiebreaker. Great coverage, Daniel, you are the best.
Congratulations to the new World Chess Champion, and thanks to both the players for the fair, entertaining, and very interesting match. Thanks GM King and PowerPlayChess for the perfect coverage!
Thank you for the coverage of this WC, Mr. King. I have been following your channel since 2020 and I really enjoy all your videos. You will get to 100k soon, you will see.
What a very fitting end to this most exciting World Chess Championship match, indeed! Big congratulations to Ding Liren on taking the crown but also huge respect to both players for being brave and constantly taking chances. This was chess entertainment at it's very best. Thank you for the coverage, GM King. I've enjoyed it a lot throughout the whole match ;) Cheers.
Thank you for your whole coverage of the WCC! Your narrative approach and insight into the players' thinking/mentality hand-in-hand with analysis makes your videos my favorites.
Thank you Daniel for your excellent analysis of the Championship. I really thought like you Ding would have been the challenger in a previous candidates cycle. I know Ding was the under dog and the way he lost earlier in the match, I did get very nervous for him. I never lost faith in him though and he did it. Well done to Ding and his team (like Richard Rapports attacking style). Lets all go and sit in a dark room and chill out for a bit. Bank Holiday here in the UK...yes its raining. See you soon Daniel.
Daniel, it was a treat to watch your videos for the match. You were the best commentator online. I contributes to your PayPal and look forward to the next one. So close to 100K. Keep it up.
I just re-watched the games on your channel, because it's always a nice addition and very instructive to hear your thoughts on the games! :) Thank you very much!
Difference between the two players in one word: courage! One has to feel for Nepo for missing so many chances throughout the match but he only has himself to blame. Thanks for the wonderful coverage of this match!
Daniel, sir, thank you so much for preparing this WCC content. It was a privilege to listen to your insights and amazing commentary. I watched every second of it and plan to watch some of the videos again. By the way, my wife (not a chess player) calls you Senior Legolas because of your gentlemanly style and perfect hair :) so you don't lack for fans in the house.
Youir coverage was by far the best amongst the four channels I'm following closely. And your coverage was unique in that it gave credit to the first three drawn games in the tiebreak. Thank you!
Thank you for covering the match mr. King, It has been a pleasure watching your quality recaps! I was lucky enough to be able to follow most of the games live, first with Giri, later with Dubov, nevertheless, your analysis always added some new insights. Thank you! And let's hope fide has learned from this wcc that giving the reigning champ the advantage of a drawn match is maybe not the best of ideas...
Another great video Daniel. Your explanations of these games have been top notch - I've been watching the live streams with the commentary but still always come here to hear your take, your style is excellent and you go at a great pace. Just a thought - have you considered doing videos of you playing rapid games against lower rated players? Your explanations are so good I'm sure it would translate over to that type of content and could help you grow the channel, I would definitely check it out. Completely up to you of course. Whatever you decide I've really appreciated your coverage of this Championship and will make sure to check in for upcoming events. Thanks again.
Yes Daniel your coverage of the wch has been first rate.. As I thought it would be... So thank you for your dedication to the infinite possibilities that makes this a mixture of art and mathematics... Many thanks Ché
This was one of the craziest endgames I'd ever witnessed and what a brave way for Ding to win. When asked about the brave self-pinning (with only about a minute on his clock at that point of trying the suprise...Rg6 Ding mentioned something like he thought it was time to 'go for it' (go for the win) and I think Ding had glanced over at his two promising passed pawns one too many times just before playing the surprise...Rg6 instead of continuing into a threefold repetition. What a crazy game and it really shows how strong Nepo was playing for most of the game as the few engine moves which can be said to have been the stronger (or at least more engine accurate moves) all.look so WEIRD, totally NOT what a human would more likely naturallty play. I congratulate Ding Liren on an AMAZING final game and great match as he is our new World Chess Champion. Nepo, we all know is most likely still kicking himself for not finding the wins with the two games he had totally winning positions in during the Classical portion of the match. Both players did a great job throughout the match and put up a highly entertaining fight for the World Championship. I feel bad for Nepo as I know how bad he wanted the title and how close he came to becoming our new Workd Chess Champion. On the other hand, I remember studying Magnus, who many will agree has become the strongest Chess player in the world (and of course is now our 'former' World Chess Champion) ..but I remember when I first started realizing how strong Magnus Carlsen was, the question that came to my mind years ago was, 'Who can beat Magnus and who has the best record vs Magnus Carlsen? and back then the answer was Nepo as Nepo had the best record vs Magnus. How many chess players can can say they THAT strong? -Nepo can! Then, The question that comes to mind is, 'How many people can say they are strong enough to compete in TWO Chess World Championships? ..and then, How many chess players can say they've beaten World Chess Champions like Magnus Carlsen and now Ding Liren, along with many more Chess Titans multiple times?..and once again - Nepo can say he's THAT strong! That's not a World Chess Championship Title but as for Nepo, These things say a great deal about his level of play and what a mighty chess player he is! So, Congrats to Ding Liren for winning this well deserved title and also hats off to Nepo for making it a titantic battle over the chess board too! WoW! What a fantastic World Chess Championship! Great analysis here as well! Thanks so much!
Thank you Daniel for your analysis of the games, with good comments. Became a subscriber. Great you showed Rapid Game 4, on it's own, and eventually won by Ding, the first time he led the entire match. Congrats on your commentary and congrats to Ding, becoming World Champion, but Nepo also had his chances!
Thanks for the coverage of all the games, I've really enjoyed them. It's been a wild month with the WCC. Nice to see such spirited games, especially this last rapid game being such a nail biter. Both players are phenomenal. I really grew to appreciate Ding's sense for active play without hesitation over these matches. Maybe not computer approved, but moves that only a human with serious nerves would dare to play and it really paid off. Congrats to King Ding!
Both players gave us a gift with this exciting match. It is hard to play boldly when you know you are not playing your best. Both players went for it, trying their hearts out in game after game despite discouraging mistakes. For anyone who knows that they really should give it the gusto despite things not having gone well, this match can be an inspiration to remember.
Thanks for all the nice videos about this match. Could you show us some matches from the match Botvinnik vs Bronstein 1951. That was also an exciting match.
I choose not to watch these games live anymore mostly so to enjoy every second of suspense in Mr King's Superb Recap Breakdown Coverage !!! :) . Congratulations to Ding Liren for becoming World Champion and hard luck for Nepo , but there were no real losers in this match ! , Well Done both !! for making it more fun this time by not playing it very conservatively !!
Great coverage Daniel, you have been such a great company those last weeks, I feel for ian and that game 12 went soo wrong, thank for you energy and keep up with the beautiful work !
This was an amazing match, I was happy with either player winning. Feel sorry for Ian, he was so close, but he took it like a champ. Congratz to Mr. King, such insightful videos, couldn't ask for more.
You show the human side of chess so well and why the computer evaluation of so many moves isn't relevant. Looking at some of the other coverage one might not understand the constraints and be lead to think that the best players in the world were blundering amateurs.
Hikaru pointed out that at 2:55 White should probably have taken with a pawn instead of a Knight. The idea is simple, you simply keep the light squared bishop in the game as a2 square is available.
Great coverage as always Daniel. My fiance doesn't watch chess but even she asked me why you're not there commentating live or chairing the press conferences. You were there in 1995 and in 2018 so I really hope we see you as a part of an analysis team or an interview team in the next WC.
This deserves to be a movie, but hollywood will probably make it like Pawn Sacrifice where they are too afraid to show the chessboard for more than 0.5 seconds. I saw this live so that automatically beats any doc/movie they could make about it, good or bad.
I was on my feet at the end. Maybe im biased because I wanted Ding to win, but how the game went back and forth multiple times...I remember letting out a sigh of relief when nepo was pushing for the draw, because i was worried for Ding, given how low he was on time, and then when he declined the draw by blocking the check with his rook, I stood up on my feet and didn't sit until it was over! What an exciting game. I don't think enough credit is given for the sheer courage ding had to decline that draw and play for the win with 90 seconds left against such a strong opponent and such an important game! Great game.
@@twassell25 I was glad to see it. Ding had 2 passed pawns and could easily be solid with the Bishop defending both of them. And the time situation quickly reversed, with Nepo getting down to twenty seconds while Ding still had over a minute, huge huge difference there. This is probably the most exciting WCC i've ever heard of except maybe for Karpov-Kasparaov x2...i wasn't alive then. I am very fortunate to see this live, and i wanted Ding to win all the way back in 2020 so this is a very special day for me. I will cherish this memory.
I was at the national premiere of Pawn Sacrifice and I managed to convince some of my non-chess playing friends to come along, as the story is interesting by itself even without knowing anything about chess. The premiere featured live commentary ahead of the film from some of the chess reporters and players who were there at the match in Reykjavik! Very interesting perspective to hear from them. The only downside was... they completely spoiled the ending to the movie for my non-chess friends before the movie even started 🥲
Thank you for the amazing coverage of the World Championship Daniel, it was an extremely entertaining WCh and your analysis was just the icing on the cake!

And let's hope fide has learned from this wcc that giving the reigning champ the advantage of a drawn match is maybe not the best of ideas...
King Ding so glad for him❤!!!
Thank you for the coverage of the WCC 2023. I enjoyed your presentation very much!
I’m very pleased for Ding. Both gave us a great match which I enjoyed so much. Thanks to the professional narrative. Love and peace. Tim
Great coverage Daniel, I looked forward to these every day.
Great coverage! Thanks, Daniel
Thank you Daniel for the Time and effort to present and explain every game of this championship.
Thank you for your commentary hence my subscription from the 4th game onwards well played sir love from New Zealand
excellent job as always Daniel, great coverage. if you will publish a book on the match I will definitely buy it.
Congratulations to Ding Liren for becoming World Champion and hard luck for Nepo , but there were no real losers in this match ! , Well Done both !! for making it more fun this time by not playing it very conservatively !!
thanks
Thank you Daniel for all explanations of this amazing Championship!!!! Love it!
Fantastic coverage of a fascinating match
Great coverage thanks
Thanks for the coverage Daniel. Fantastic WCC.
awesome coverage!
congratulations to both players who played with tremendous spirit and endeavour. Huge result for Ding, well done lad.
Great coverage Daniel, you have been such a great company those last weeks, I feel for ian and that game 12 went soo wrong, thank for you energy and keep up with the beautiful work !
...arguably the most exciting and spectacular Chess World Championship since Fischer/Spassky Reykjavik 1972!
Self-pin and win
This was an amazing match, I was happy with either player winning. Feel sorry for Ian, he was so close, but he took it like a champ.
Congratz to Mr. King, such insightful videos, couldn't ask for more.
You show the human side of chess so well and why the computer evaluation of so many moves isn't relevant. Looking at some of the other coverage one might not understand the constraints and be lead to think that the best players in the world were blundering amateurs.
Daniel what a Master commenting the games. I enjoyed so much your coverage an congrats to Ding.
@18:17 i think there's a typo in your video: He actually played Kg8 and they repeated the position once before Ding decided to play 46.. Rg6
Hikaru pointed out that at 2:55 White should probably have taken with a pawn instead of a Knight. The idea is simple, you simply keep the light squared bishop in the game as a2 square is available.
congrats Ding! cheers so much to your great coverage !
Who is Ding hugging in the picture a the end?
Amazing turn around, when you consider the start he had to the Candidate's tournament and having been behind a few times in this match.
this fantastic match looked like an endless boxing match between two dangerous knockers
@DrZ214 you and me both! We are so lucky to have witnessed such an amazing game, and series!
