    Magnus carlsen was so dominant and overpowered that he made the last 5 championships so boring. His opponents were so afraid that they took draws whenever it was possible without even daring to risk a play. But this world championship where both players are on the same level, it is so exciting and intense. So lovely to see this.

      Magnus couldn't even beat Karjakin or Caruana in the actual WCC, and it's not because his opponents feared him and played for draws. It's because Carlsen is a zero-risk grinder and Caruana is an engine memorization type.
      I would say that no one takes fewer risks in classical chess than Magnus, and I would only be wrong because a few people like Fabi exist.

    • @s_solus3089
      @s_solus3089 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Karjakin did pretty nicely. I’d say he was Magnus’ strongest challenger, him or Caruana.

    • @SARCASMlC
      @SARCASMlC ปีที่แล้ว +90

      @@roberthansen5727 Carlsen is just ruthlessly efficient. Why take risks going for a win when tiebreaks come down to faster time controls where he absolutely kills both Caruana and Karjakin? Either of them winning the tiebreaks would've been an absolutely shocking turn of events.
      When he faced off against Anand, the tiebreakers favored Anand. There Magnus took risks and had decisive games. It probably says more about the format than anything else.
      Ian is also just a higher variance player than Magnus. He's more up and down and that's always going to lead to more decisive games.

    D5 is fascinating in the sense that Ding likely found it backwards. Queen moves and attempts at a mating net are candidates, but they don’t work since the king could escape. The plan had a flaw, so Ding could either move on to other candidate moves, or see if there is a way to fix the problem first. Turns out there is. Since e6 is the escape square, d5 preemptively can block it. But only if there’s time. Nepo’s A pawn is a huge threat. So Ding had then to calculate whether he can spare a tempo on d5. And there was.
