Another great review. I like when you show the inside too, that should give potential buyers all they need to know. I was thinking of going for this recently, before I ended up with the Yihua 899D II . I didn't want to push my budget that far. It has a lot less add-ons than most of the cheaper solder stations, usually that's because they did it proper I tend to find. I bet it lasts well.
What drew me to the Quick brand was Louis Rossman's video of the Quick 861DW versus the Hakko 810 hot air stations. I have the Hakko 888 but the price of their hot air is well beyond me. Looks like Quick are making a bit of a name for themselves these days.

How does it tell the wand is in the cradle or free and easy? Is it a mechanical switch on the cradle, or is it passing current from the wand to the cradle and detecting the circuit open/closed?

There is a reed switch in the handle. The cradle is magnetic

I find 350-400 degrees usually works well when removing lead free solder. Doesn't burn anything as long it is moved around while heating. Actually find I'm more likely to burn something using low temperatures.

Simple fix for the lead is replace it with a short IEC receptacle ended lead. If you're buying one of these, replacing a power lead shouldn't be out of one's league, I wouldn't think.

Thanks for the great review. I just bought it and i wonder if there is a way to compensate the temp undershoot at the nozzle. At 400°C on the display, i measured 350-370 °C at nozzle, at 450 its measured 400-420, or is it ok?

Seems like a reasonable unit, thanks for the info. I keep a pack of cable mount C14s (RS 776-9113) in stock to fix stuff with captive mains leads. Not a perfect solution but saves the faff of cutting square holes!

      Minifig666 Hi,
I’m just curious and I missing the point. Could you please explain why you’d mount a C14 socket on the cable. Why wouldn’t you use a normal extension cord?
      Thanks in advance.
PS. I got the 858D with the fan in the hand piece. It was extremely cheap (€20.78 incl shipping) and has worked fine for me so far. I don’t use it a lot though. (And it has a proper C14 plug ;)

Good to hear you can get spare elements at least. Normally these hobbyist machines are all good for a few hours maybe light duty use over a year but suddenly breakdown and it's impossible to buy any parts making it only good for recycling or landfill!

My guess is that the heater shuts off early when the air is low to prevent overheating. Also need to account for the metal around the nozzle sucking some heat out of the air flow. I like the remote fan stations but it always makes the cable so thick. My Handskit station can still push close to 120L and it has the blower in the handle. You do get a little more noise but you really don´t feel the extra weight from the blower since these stations all have such thin plastic. I never turn it up very high so I don´t even notice the noise from the blower though.

Hi Steve, a quick question on these stations. Is this 857DW+ better than the all in one units, where the blower is built in to the handle and the whole thing can be swapped? Or would you recommend those over this version. My budget is around the price of this hot air station.

I’ve bought the 858D no-name hot-air station a few months ago for the rock bottom price of €20.78 including shipping. (On AliExpress) It’s 700W and has its fan in the hand piece. The temperature is set with two buttons instead of a know which I would have preferred. 🤓
I don’t use it a lot but when I do it hasn’t disappointed me yet.
    Quite a steel imo.
(Prices have since gone up to a little over €30 incl shipping)
Just my €0.02. Thanks for the review!

Great review, I used to have a Metcal HCT-900 really did not like the diaphragm pump so I sold it but I did like the analogue controls. I bought a very cheap WEP 858D as a stop gap till I find something else and assumed it wouldn't last 5 minutes but it's been used for a years almost daily in the workshop and still works perfectly, but I don't like the push buttons for the temp control and the blower in the handle. I've been looking at the Quick 957DW+ I wonder what the difference is between the 857 and 957? I've just got a Quick 201B Desoldering station and blown away with the quality.

This looks like a great unit for the price. I did some relatively brief research and it seems like the best option for me. I didn't want to spend more than $100 and the other generic options don't look good to me. The next best option I found was the SparkFun hot air station but I'm more impressed by this one and decided to order it.
I'll need to change the power cable (US) and I'll upgrade the handle's ground wire to something thicker when I get it. Thanks for the in depth and detailed review!
P.S. The order I made was the first one where a coupon that Honey found worked for me. It saved me $10.72!

  • @AG-cg7lk
    @AG-cg7lk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Great review. Looks like an ideal option for me as I really don't want a blower-in-handle design, but I also want simple controls and a small footprint. I wonder if the air and temp controls are interacting? That might explain it not reaching max temp when there is not enough air flow, by design to prevent damage to the element or handpiece. EDIT: Also, anyone think it's fishy that Quick don't list this model anywhere and there are different brand versions if you hunt for them. I suspect that this isn't made by Quick at all.

I have this unit, I like it very much but I don't have anything to compare it. Is this suitable for professional repair (mainly phones and laptops), or should I consider getting the 861DW? I also, really like the user interface.
I have completely detached the holder thingy from the actual chassis and attached it vertically to the side of my instrument shelves. That way it's closer to me, "parks" more reliably and overall much more ergonomic. I love keeping my instruments elevated on shelves, more desk space that way and less clutter.
I am enjoying these videos, quality content right there!

I would always recommend a preheater for professional repair - if you use one, this will be powerful enough. Rapid localised heating can cause stresses in the PCB. The BST-863 is the best value for money if you find you need more power. Get some scrap boards and test it out

If you’re a beginner and went three and one for a real cheap price YIHUA 853D you get hot air for SMD you get a handheld soldering iron and you get a volt meter tester plus power supply I bought mine for $59 online. I now see one is cheap as $36 online in some places are trying to sell them for more than $100 which is a rip off do not buy this unit for no more then I would say $70 at most. Port meter power supply handheld soldering iron hot air gun I’ve been using mine for four years. For seven dollars I had to replace the element after two years that was easy to get on eBay for the handheld soldering iron.
